ens BURNER.
Application filed August 4, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES WEIss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansdale, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to burners, and more particularly to gas burners adapted for use in connection with gas stoves of known construction.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a burner of simple construction which may be readily produced and sold at small cost.
Another object is to provide a burner having means for cooling the same and for producing a supplemental supply of air which. will mix with the gas and products of combustion so as to obtain complete combustion and produce maximum heating effect.
Further objects will appear from the detail description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of the burner.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal section through the burner.
Figure 3 is a central horizontal section through the burner.
Figure 4 is a transverse section through the burner.
The burner includes a casing 1 of boxlike construction. This casing is provided with air tubes 7 which extend through the burner from the top to the bottom thereof.
A fuel supply pipe 8 is supported in casing 1 centrally thereof, this pipe extending between the air tubes At its outer end pipe 8 is provided with a mixer 9 of known type adapted to receive a gas supply nozzle from which gas is injected into pipe 8, air being drawn into mixer 9 through suitable openings provided for this purpose, in a known manner, the mixture of gas and air flowing through pipe 8 longitudinally thereof. This pipe is provided with a plurality of bulbous enlargements 10 which form, in effect, expansion chambers, The
Serial No. 655,612.
pipe is further provided with laterally disposed slots or outlet openings 11 between the enlargements 10 and is closed at its inner end by a screw plug 12. The fuel pipe 8 is cast integrally with casing 1 thus producing a burner of very simple construction which can be made and sold at very low cost.
When the mixture of gas and air flows through pipe 8, "the bulbous enlargements 1O permit expansion of this mixture which is then forced to flow through the relative ly smaller cross area of the pipe thus impartingincreased velocity to the mixture so as to insure discharge of the same through all of the openings 1.1 at a uniform velocity, insuring equal distribution of the combustible mixture throughout the casing 1 for the whole length thereof. This mixture which has been discharged into casing 1 flows through perforations 15 provided in the top wall of the casing for this purpose, the mixture being ignited above the casing as in the ordinary gas burner. In this connec tion, attention is directed to the fact that the mixture of gas and air is discharged into casing 1 through openings 11 horizontally so that/the direction of flow of this mixture is suddenly changed before it flows through perforations 15. This insures thorough and intimate mixing of the gas and air after the mixture is discharged from the pipe 8 and, during flow of the mixture through the pipe, the alternate expansion and contraction of the mixture due to the provision of the enlargements 10 also materially assists in obtaining very thorough mixing of the gas and air. This greatly increases the efiiciency of the burner by insuring complete combustion and a maximum heating effect. The air tubes 7 permit air to flow upwardly through the burner so as to cool the same and prevent excessive heating of the burner casing, while also providing a supplemental air supply, by means of which air is supplied to the mixture of gas and air above the burner, this supplemental air supply insuring complete combustion which is very desirable burners of this type,
What I claim is 1. In a burner of the character described, a casing having its top Wall perforated, a
' fuel supply pipe extending through the casing and provided With bulbous enlargements spaced'apart longitudinally of the pipe, said pipe being further provided with utlet openings positioned Within the casing and between the enlargements, and air tubes eX- tending through the casing from the top to the bottom thereof and open at both ends.
2. In a burner of the character described, a box-like casing having its top Wall perforated, said casing provided With tubular elements extending through the casing from top to bottom thereof and open at both ends, and a fuel supply pipe extending into the casing and provided With fuel discharge openings Within the casing.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
CHARLES WEISS.
