Be it known that I, FERDINAND LOGAN, a citizen of the United" States, residing at Phoenixville, in "the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam and Air Mixers for Gas-Generators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a steam and air mixer for gas-generating furnaces;
The main object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable, economical and efficient steam and air mixer attachment to a gas-generator, said attachment being so constructed that the steam beingretarded in its passage therethrough and in contact therewith causes it to become as intensely hot-as the steam will make it, in from three to four minutes, thereby imparting heat to the air fed therethrough in contact therewith and commingled with the steam so that the air becomes as hot as the steam, the said heated air absorbing all moisture from the steam, thus avoiding all condensation in the bottom of the generator.
A further object of the invention is to attach my improved steam and air mixer at one side of a gas-generator near the base portion thereof so that it will supply a combined stream of air and steam under pressure beneath the grate-bars of the generator and cause the sameto pass upward through the incandescent body of fuel and become a fixed gas before passing from the generator to the superheater and which cannot become stratified.
Another object of this invention is to so construct my steam and air mixer that a retarding chamber'is formed in the bottom i portion thereof wherein the air is highly heated, and the steam and air is thoroughly mixed before. being discharged beneath the grate-bars of the generator, thereby eliminating all condensation from the bottom of the generator, and thus preventing the deadening of the fire and lessening the heat units at the bottom of the fuel bed withinthe generator.
The foregoing and such other objects as ensuing; description are attained by the novel features of construction, combination, arrangement and location of the parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out' 'in the claims appended hereto, it being understood. that slight changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of the construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

At a suitable point beneath the grate a discharge or outlet pipe 3 is passed through an opening in the-Wall of the generator A, the inner end of said pipe terminating within the generator at a point closely adjacent to theopposite wall thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 1,.th'e upper plurality of longitudinal dischargeslots 3, and the outer end of the pipe 3 isirigidly secured to the threaded outlet portion 4 of a casting 5, said casting consisting of an upright hollow body portionfi, having a threaded opening at its upper end 7, adapted toreceive and rigidly portion ofanair pipe 8. Integral with the said casting at the lowerend portionthereofis an annularretarding chamber 1a, the walls of which become intensely hot in minutes by the course of the steam passlng therethrough and in contact therewith, the chamber 14. being formed by the interior downwardly extending wall 15, the outer wall 16, and the inner wall 17, the said chamber being provided with an outlet opening 18 formed through the inner wall 17, and leading to the outlet portion at of the casting. In the opening formed in the casting at a point directly opposite the said outlet portion 4, is rigidly and securely fitted a screwthreaded plug 19 adapted to close the said opening.
In the operation of this improved steam and air mixer, the steam will be caused to emerge from the nozzle 13 under pressure within the casting, thereby causing an in: tense suction within said casting, and. causing the air to flow through the air pipe 8 into the hollow body portion 6, thence into the retarding chamber, which has become intensely hot by the retardation of the steam passed therethrough, and the air becomes highly heated to the temperature of the steam by its passage around and in contact with the highly heated walls of the circular chamber and becomes thoroughly mixed and commingled with the steam, from whence the highly heated combined mixture of air and steam is discharged into the generator through the longitudinal slotted discharge opening 3 formed through the upper portion of the outlet pipe 3, at a suitable point below the grate, and passes upward through the incandescent body of fuel and merges into a fixed gas before passing from the generator to the superheater and which will not stratify. v
It will be understood that suitable regulating and relief valves may be utilized in connection with the steam and air supply pipes in order to supply any desirable amount of air or steam, dependent upon the volume and quality of product desired to be generated.
In view of the fact, that the retarding chamber is provided with a discharge or outlet opening at each side thereof, it will be readily perceived that either, side of the casting may be positionedadjacent to the gas generator, one of the openings being closed with a suitable plug.
It will be obvious that my improved steam and an mixers may be made of different sizes, dependent upon the capacity of the plant, and the quantity of the product defrom three to four "purpose of heating up steam boilers and reheating gas genera-tors. v V
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s 1. A steam and air mixer for gas-genera tors attached to a generator at one side thereof and independently of said generator, consisting of a. casting having an upper hollow portion, an. annular integral retarding chamber forming itslower portion, side walls to the said chamber with openings formed in said walls, and a dischargepipe connected at one end to one of the openings in the side walls of the retarding chamber and the other end terminating within the generator below the grate thereof. i V
2. A steam and air mixer forges-generators attached to the generatorat one side thereof and independently of said generator, consisting of a casting having an upper hollow portion, and an integral annular retarding chamber formed at its lower portion, sidewalls to the chamber with openings formed therethrough, said retarding chamber having a dischargeopening formed in its inner wall, an opening formed in one of its side walls to which a discharge pipe is secured, and an opening in' the other side wall adapted to be closed by a plug.
A steam and air mixer for gas-generators attached to the generator at one side thereof and independentlyof said generator, consisting of a casting having an'upright hollow body portion interiorly threaded at its ,upper endto receive an airpipe, and having 7 a threaded ,opening formed therethr-ough 'nearits upper end adapted to receive a steam pipe, a steam pipe outlet fitted within said body portion, and a heated annular retarding chamber forming the lower end of the casting, side walls to the chamber having openings formed therethrough and having a discharge openingin the inner wall of said chamber, an opening in one of the side walls adapted to receive a discharge pipe, and an openingin the other side wall to which .a plug is fitted.

A steam and air mixer for gas-generators attached to the generator adjacent thereto, consisting of a casting having a hollow portion at one end adapted to receive air and steam, and an integral highly heated annular retarding chamber at its other end formed by an inner inclined wall, inner and outer annular side walls to the chamber, said inner wall being provided with a discharge opening therethrough, and the outer side Walls having an outlet opening at either side, in combination with a discharge pipe connected to one of the side walls of the retarding chamber and terminating in the generator beneath the grate, said pipe having a plurality of longitudinal slotted discharge openings formed therethrough, in its upper side.
6. A steam and air mixer for gas generators attached to the generator adjacent thereto, consisting of a casting having a hollow portion at one end thereof adapted to receive an air pipe and a steam pipe, a steam discharge pipe fitted within said hollow portion, an integral heated retarding chamber forming the other end of the casting, said retarding chamber having inner and outer annular side walls, an inner discharge opening formed through its inner wall, and an outer discharge opening at one side, and an opening at the other side to which a plug is fitted, in combination with a discharge pipe one end of the body being fitted to said outer discharge opening in one of the side walls and the other end of the pipe terminating Within the generator below the grate, and having a plurality of longitudinal discharge openings formed therethrough in its upper side.
