(5. RACQNOVICH LOCK Filed 'June 20 GEORGE RACO'NOVICH, F SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF FILFTEEN PER Patented .luly 22, 1924.,
uni'rso s'raras CENT TO 0. G. HOPKINS, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
LOCK.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, Gnonon llAG0N0vICH,
a subject of the King of Serbia, residing at This invention relates to'a lock in which the key-holes are out of alignment thereby preventing any View of the 'interior of a room through the keyhole, and to a certain extent obstructing the passage of sound waves, and also preventing the ejecting of a key in the look from the opposite-side by the passage of any instrument through the opposite key-hole. The invention also includes a cally impossible bolt of such construction that when in full locked position it covers one of the keyholes, in practice the exterior one, thus preventin introduction of any key or type of lock picking device into the lock; the bolt extendin so far into'the keeper ivhen in full lockmg osition as to make it practito jirnmy the look by forcing or prying the bolt back by means of an instrument inserted at the edge of the door.
l/Vith these various objects in view the in vention consists of the following novel features of construct-ion hereinafter described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lock, the outer face plate being removed and the exterior key-hole being indicated in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a partial end elevation and partially in section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
igure 3 is a section on the line 33 of 'Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the locking bolt.
Figure 5 is a sectional detail view show- 'ing the position occupied by the key when Application filed June 20, 1921. Serial No. 478,819.
a pin 10-. A spring 11 has one end portion secured to the bolt 9;, is coiled aronnd'the pin 5, passed through the pin 10 and rests under the pin 6. 1 This spring throws for ward the bolt 2 and also holds the tumbler '7 in normal position.
The key-operated bolt 12 is slotted longitudinally as shown at 13 and the tumbler 7 works in this slot.
One side of this bolt has three notches 14 cut in its upper edge, and these notches cooperate with a lug 10 carried on one side of the tumbler, adjacent the lug 9 and immediately to the rear of the pin 10 so that the spring 11. will hold the lug firmly in one of the notches, preventing longitudinal movement of the bolt until the lug is disengaged. On the under side the bolt has three notches 15 adapted to be engaged by the key 19.
The casing is provided with otlset keyholeslfi and 17, the one at 17 being that preferably operated from the outer side "of the door, though of course the lock can be placed in any position desired. The cover plate of the casing opposite each key hole is countersunk as at18 to receive the end of the key. This limits the extent to which the key can be inserted and also acts as a guide ensuring proper insertion ofthe key before turning.
When the key it is turned twice. Before the key engages the first notch 15 it lifts the tumbler clear ing the lug 10 from its notch 14:. The sec- 0nd turn of the key again lifts the tumbler and the key then engages the second notch 15, throwing the bolt 12 the entire distance of its travel and bringing a portion of it over the keyhole 17.
Therefore when the door is locked from the inside it is impossible to insert any key into the look through the outer keyhole 17, or to gain access to the lock, casing to pick it. When the key is inserted into the key-hole 17 only one turn of the key is made, and the key-hole remains uncovered. V
Any form or style of key may be used which will operate the lock.
' /vhat I claim is:-
placed key-holes, a slidable bolt, said bolt having a series of three equally spaced notches on its under side and adapted to is inserted in keyhole l6 In a look, a casing having oppositely be en egeci b' keyho e, the eyhole in one sideo the easing being offset with respect to that on the opposite side, said notched portion of the tumbler being so arranged with respect n said keyholes that when inserted through one keyhole it is adapted to engage two of said notches in succession, and when inserted' throughnthe other to engage only one ofeaicl notches thereby throwing the belt a greater distance when locked from one side ot thedoor than When locked from the opposite awe, the said bolt having; it guerci portion adept-ed to cover an eke yinserted throufgh either.
exterior keyhole when theboltis moved to its extreme locking position, the bolt having also notches on its upper face, three in number, a tumbler havin a lug adapted to-engage one of said note es in each of the three positions of the belt, a pin carried by the tumbler, '& pin fixed above the tumbler, and a spring secured at one end and passin through the tumbler pin-and having its ree end renting under the fixed pin.
ture.
GEORGE RACONOVi-OH.
