DRILL MOUNTING.
Application filed January To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUs'rAvn M. NELL, citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drill Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is directed to 1ID- provements in drill mountings.
As is well known rock drills employ a pair of side rods for firmly holding the front and back heads in en agementw1th the respective ends of the hammer cyl nder, and an important object of this invention is to utilize one of these side rods for firmly securing the drill to the slide frame, whereby the drill will be compelled to move with the slide frame as the same is moved longitudinally of the guide shell.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mounting so constructed that a drill can be easily and quickly connected to the slide frame, or detached therefrom, the construction being extremely simple, durable, and eflicient in operation.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated 1n the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, partly in section.
Figure 2 is atop plan view of the slide frame.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a guide shell, which is provided with the usual side grooves 2, and feed screw 3, cooperatively associated with the slide frame 4. The sides of the slide frame are provided with longitudinal side flanges 5 for slidable engagement in the grooves 2 of the guide shell 1, there being formed near the outer end of the slide frame an upwardly extending head 6 in which is formed a bore 7, the purpose of which will appear later. The rear end of the slide frame is provided with a depending bracket 8 in which is located a nut 9 for engagement with the feed screw 3, whereby the slide frame will be moved in accordance with the direction in which the feed screw is rotated.

The slide frame 4 is further provided with a pair of upwardly extended laterally spaced ears 10, which are disposed above the plane of the slide frame, said ears having openings 11 formed therein.
The drill 12 has its front head 13 provided with diametrically disposed lugs 14 through which the side rods 15 and 16 pass, the former having its head 17 engaged with the lug 18 carried by the back head 19. The back head 19 has formed integral there with an interiorly threaded lug 20, the bore of which is alined with the bore 7 of the head 6. It will be observed that the side rod 16 is reversed so that its head 1'? lies adjacent the front head 13, and has threaded portion 21 adapted to engage in the bore of the lug 20, and at which time a portion of the back head 19 is engaged between the ears 10, there being a transverse bore 22 formed in the back head through which the clamping bolt 23 is engaged, said bolt being also engaged in the openings 11 of the cars 10 and serves to firmly secure the back head between the ears, and thus to the slide frame 4. y
It will be of course understood that the side rod 16 is first passed through the bore 7 of the head 6, and upon rotating the rod in the necessary direction the threaded portion 21 thereof will be threaded into the lug 20, thus firmly holding the drill united with the slide frame.
The side rods 15 and 16 are provided with the usual springs 24c having their terminals provided with lugs 24 for looking on agement with the lugs 14; and the side roc nut 25 and head 17 of the lowermost side rod 16, and consequently the side rods are held firmly against rotation due to vibration when the drill is running.
The slide frame 4 is provided with a strengthening web 26, and the forward end thereof is formed with a cut-out portion 27, while the rear end thereof is provided with an opening 28, which accommodate, respectively, the lowermost lug 14 and the lug 20.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that theside rods 15 and 16 perform their usual functions, and in addition thereto one serves to hold the drill firmly connected with the slide frame, and it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and without further description.
What is claimed is 1. In a drill mounting, the combination with a guide shell, of a slide frame movable thereon and having a head upon its forward endand laterally spaced ears upon its rear end, a drill having a portion of its back head disposed between said ears, a clamping bolt engaged in the ears and portion of the back head, an interiorly threaded lug 2. The combination with a drill having side rods provided with threaded ends and adapted to be applied to the drill from opposite directions to locate the threaded end of the rods, respectively, adjacent the front and rear ends of the drill, of a guide shell, a slide frame slidable thereon and having a head, said drill having a lug for alinernent with said head, one of said side rods being engaged in the head and having itsthreaded end engaged the lug.
