My invention relates to rock drilling tools or the like.
1t has for its object to provide an improved drilling mechanism and more especially to provide an improved mechanism of the stoper type whereby access to the usual cleansing fluid supply means may be readily obtained and whereby the feeding means common to such devices may be quickly detached Aherefpm.
1n the accompanying drawings 1 have shown for purposes of illustration two forms which my invention may assume in practice.

In the illustrative construction shown in Figs. 1 to l it will be noted that 1 haveshown a. stoper of generally ferm including a drill motor of any suitable type, herein of the valveless percussive type and mcluding a cylinder 1 having a hammer piston 2 therein, the hammer piston operating through a tappet 8 on a drill steel el carried in a suitable chuck 5 in the front head (3 of the motor. As in the usual construction, suitable cleansing fiuid supply means generally designated 7 extends aziially through the piston to terminate either 1n the striking plug 3 or in the steel l, as may be preferred, and has its rear end removably connected to a rear motor head 8 by suitable mechanism, generally indicated at 9, in such manner lthat the cleansing fluid supply means may be witl drawn from the rear end of the cylinder` Cooperating with the drill motor is a feeding mechanism which .may be of any desired type and herein includes elements 10 and 11, the former of which is the feed cylinder, while the latter is a feed piston, this feeding mechanism being connected, as hereafter described, to the drill motor and being adapted when a foot 12 herein carried on the end of the feed piston 11 is disposed against a support, to feed the drill motor away from the support and toward the work, the feed being controlled by any suitable means of well known construction, not shown.
1n the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to e, it will be observed that the forward end of the feed cylinder terminates in an external collar 13 which is adapted to be pressed into engagement with the rear head 8 of the motor. 1t will further be noted that side rods 1^: and 15 which extend from the front head 6 through the cylinder member 1 and through the rear head 8 are surrounded at their rear ends by suitably formed locking members 16, these members having projecting ears 17 extending toward each other and provided with wedge or cam surfaces 18 (see Fig. a) with which suitable cooperating locking means 19 is designed to coact. Surrounding the feed cylinder 10 is a generally annular member, the member 19 above referred to, which member has a pair o-f lugs 21 disposed at opposite sides thereof and formed with inclined surfaces 22 adapted to engage and coact with the inclined surfaces 18 on the member 1G. rlhe member 19 also has a lug 23 intermediate the lugs 21 which may be struck for the rotation of the member 19 as hereafter described.
As will be observed from Fig. 1, the member 19 is of different thickness at dierent points, the points of maximum thickness occurring in a diamo-tric line at right angles to a line connecting the middle points of the lug 21 whereby collar engaging surfaces 2% are formed which rest upon the collar 13 and force it into engagement with the rear head S.
From the description which has been given, the mode of operation of this mechanism will be clearly apparent. lVhen it is desired to attach the feed cylinder and feeding mechanism to the drilling motor, the parts are brought into juxtaposition and the member 19 is moved so that the inclined surfaces of the lugs 21 slip in under the inclined surfaces operating with said locking means upon rotao-f the members 16 and then by the striking tion of the latter and associated with said side of a smart blow upon the lug- 23 the member rod-s.
19 is turned about the axis of the Leed cylinder in such way as to cause forward movement of the member 19 and the pressing by it of the feed cylinder into tight engagement with the rear head 8. By simply knocking the lug. 23 in the opposite direction so as to cause the lugs 21 to slide out of engagement with the members 16, the feed cylinder can be readily removed for overhauling or for permitting access to the cleansing iuid supply means. Suitable packing washers may be employed, if desired, between the forward end of the feed cylinder and the rear head 8.
In Figs. 5 and 6 a dierent form of my invention is disclosed. In this form the feed cylinderV 10 is provided with an annular collar 13 as in the earlier form described, but cooperatingv therewith is a clamping yoke 25 pivotally connected as indicated at 26 to the rear head 8 and having arms 27 and 28 extending on opposite sides of the feed cylinder, as shown in Fig. 6. These arms are provided with projections or thickened portions 29 adapted to engage the collar 13 and a lcross bar 30 carried by a pivoted bolt 31 is adapted to extend across the free ends of the arms 27 and 28, and, upon tightening of the nut 32 upon the bolt 31, the yoke will be caused to rigidly press the collar 13 into engagement with the rear head 8 of the motor. It will be evident that the feed cylinder can be detached for any purpose by simply loosening the nut 32, swinging the bolt 31 about its pivot onthe head 8, and then withdrawing the feed cylinder rearwardly as the yoke 25 pivots about its pivot 26.
While I have in this application specifically' described two forms which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that these forms of the same are shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms Without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A drilling mechanism comprising a drilling motor having side rods for holding the parts thereof together, alined feeding means therefor including a feed cylinder, and means for holding said cylinder and motor together including a rotatable locking member surrounding said cylinder, and cooperating lockingl means associated with said side ro s.
