Description
C. HENRY.
AUGER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY7, 1920.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
Charles erny M @Wcozwu UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES HENRY, OF I IANAY UNK TPENNSYLVANIA.
AUGER.
Application filed May 7, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns HENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manayunk, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Augers, of which the following is a specification.
in boring machines employed in coal or other mines the auger or shank of the bit is threaded through what is generally termed a thread box or a feed box that is attached to the machine. With such construction it is necessary to regulate the speed of the machine to adjust the feed of the auger. As the bit necessarily contacts with both hard and soft surfaces a frequent adjust ment of the machine is necessary which re quires both time and labor.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a feed or thread box which may be readily attached to the yoke supporting the ordinary threaded feed box and which comprises an internally threaded sleeve that receives the threaded shank of the bit or auger and which may be clamped on the yoke to hold the same against turning so that the auger will feed thereover, which may be permitted to revolve on the yoke with the auger, so that the auger will not be fed to its work and which may be held by a wheel attached thereto for determined periods of time, when the same is loose in its bearings so that the auger will be fed to its work only at desired intervals, and consequently permit of the auger being employed for all classes of work required in a mine, such as boring through rock, as well as coal.
Further objects and advantages will appear a the nature of the invention is better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure .1 is a side elevation of the improvement.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
As my improvement may be attached to any class of coal or rock boring machines, a description of such machine has not been deemed necessary, nor is it thought necessary to illustrate such machine in the accompanying drawings. The thread or feed box for the auger is supported from a yoke 10 Specification of Letters Patent. Patent-ed Nov. 9,1920,
.Serial No; 379,690.
having a threaded stud 11 at the connecting member for the angular arms of the said yoke and the stud is engaged by a nut 12 which holds it in position on the machine. The angle arms of the yoke, at the straight extensions formed on the ends thereof are provided with round openings receiving round studs 13 formed on the ends of a plate 14 that provides one of the elements of a box. The plate l l is formed with a centrally rounded depression 1". The second member of the box, indicated by the numeral 15 is in the nature of an element which is semi-cylindrical in cross section, and has one of its straight ends pivotally secured, as at 16 to the member 1%. The second straight end of the member 15, indicated by the numeral 18 is slotted, and the straight portion of the plate 14 on which the said'portion 18 of the member 15 rests has an upstanding lug 19 provided with a wedge opening through which passes a wedge key 19. This holds the section 15 removably locked on the section 14.
The adjusting sleeve is broadly indicated by the numeral 20, the barrel portion of which having a central continuous depres sion of a size to be snugly received in the concaved or depressed portion 1717 of the members 14; and 15. This holds the sleeve against longitudinal movement on its support, but permits of the free rotary movement thereof. The sleeve 20, on one of its ends, 22, has radiating spokes 26 connecting to the sleeve a hand wheel 27. The depression in the sleeve is indicated by the numeral 21, and the bore of the sleeve is threaded for the reception of the threaded shank 24 of the bit 25.
The bit is turned by any suitable means (not shown). The bit may be arranged at any desired angle with respect to the support and the. said support may be turned horizontally on its stud 11. The sleeve 20 may be retained against free turning in the box provided by the elements 14L and 15,.
through the medium of a binding screw 28 that enters a threaded opening in the cen tral portion 17 of the'member 15, and it is thought that the foregoing description will set forth the simplicity and advantages of the construction to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim, is
In a device for the purpose set forth, a
pivotally secured over the first mentioned plate and having a straight extension Which is slotted, a lug having an opening'on the first mentioned plate receiving the'slotted edge of the first mentioned plate thereover,
10 a Wedge key passing through the opening a bit having a threaded shank, a sleeve receiving the shank and having a centrally rounded depressed portion received in the rounded portions of the mentioned plates,
binding means'between one of the plates and the sleeve, and a hand Wheel on one end of the sleeve. 7
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
