Be it known that I, DIX DUNLAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Junta, in the county of Otero, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful linprovements in Vertical-Feed Attachments for Turning-Lathes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to vertical feed attachments for turning lathes.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of an attachment for turning lathes embodying an improved construction whereby a vertical feed of the work may be had when a milling attachment is utilized in connection with the lathe.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of an attachment for turning lathes adapted to be secured to the tool carriage, such application of the attachment to the tool carriage being rendered possible by simply removing the tool post.
With the above and other objects in view th invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a fragment of a turning lathe showing the attachment applied and the tool slide disposed diagonally of the lathe;

Referring to the drawings 10 indicates the tool slide-of the lathe which is adapted to be adjusted longitudinally and rotated on a vertical axis all in the usual and well known manner. The slide 10 is provided with the usual transverse groove 11 for receiving the base of the tool post.
The attachment is shown as comprising a securing member which includes a base 12 corresponding in shape to the base of a tool post and adapted to be slidably engaged in the groove 11. Secured to the base 12 and rising therefrom are bolts 13 having nuts 1 threaded on their upper ends respectively. The attachment further embodies a cylindrical body member 15 provided with longitudinal passages 16 and 17 through which the bolts 13 are respectively engaged in applying the attachment to a lathe. After the bolts 13 have been engaged through the passages 16 and 17 the nuts 14 applied and screwed against the top of the body 15 and in this manner the tool slide 10 is clamped between the base 12 and the body 15 to secure the parts firmly together. The attachment further embodies a cylindrical shell 18 telescopically engaged over the body 15. This shell 18 is provided with a longitudinal slot 19 in its side and is also split longitudinally as at 20 and on opposite sides of the split 20 are ears 21 through which is engaged a clamping bolt 22 whereby the shell 18 may be clamped upon the body 15. Secured against the side of the body 15 is a key 23 which is engaged in the slot 19 and whereby the shell 18 is held against rotation on the body 15 and at the same time permitted to be adjusted longitudinally. Rotatably mounted in the top of the shell 18 is an adjusting screw 24, said screw extending longi tudinally through the shell and being engaged in a threaded longitudinal passage 25 in the body 15. The upper end of the screw 24; is squared as at 26 to permit the application of an operating handle 27 for effecting the rotation of the screw. Assuming that the bolt 22 is released it. will be apparent that by rotating the screw 2 1- the shell 18 can be adjusted longitudinally. By operating the clamping bolt 22 the shell 18 can be positively locked in a desired adjustment on the body 15.
The shell 18 is provided at its lower end with a lateral extension 28 which terminates in a U-shaped portion 29 adapted to receive the work between its arms. Mounted in one of the arms of the U-shaped portion 29 are clamping screws 30 whereby the work may be firmly held in said U-shaped portion.
In the use of the attachment it will be obvious that vertical adjustment of the shell 18 will produce corresponding adjustment of L the U-shaped portion 29 and the work carried by the latter. In this manner a vertical feed of the Work may be effected when a milling attachment is used in conjunction with the lathe.
What is claimed is:
In an attachment for turning lathes the combination with a tool slide, of a base ,detachably interlocking with the slide and having its upper face below the upper face of the slide, bolts engaged through the base, a hollow cylindrical member having its lower end engaging the base and its upper end closed, said bolt passing through the closed upper end ofthe cylindrical member, a second cylindrical member telescopically engaged over the first cylindrical member and provided with a longitudinal slot, said second cylindrical member having its upper end closed, a screw rotatably mounted axially in the upper end of the second cylindrical member and engaged in and axially disposed threaded passages in the upper end of the first cylindrical member, a Work support carried by the second cylindrical member and a lug carried by the first cylindrical member and slidably engaged in the slot of the second cylindrical member In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
