Be it known that I, FRANK Danielson", a citizen ot the United States, resi-ding at Chicago, in the county 4o'vfGook and State of Illinois, have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement in Motor Stands, of which the following is a full, clear, con-A cise, and exact description, reference vbeing had to the accompanyingdrawings, rtorniing a part of this speciiication.
This invention relates tol motor stands for engines and more particularly to a clamping means for internal 'combustion engines adapted to securely hold the engine in a'pl'urality ofp'ositions to facilitate various o`p= erations thereon.
The invention further relates to aV rotatable stand or table forclamping an internal combustion engine thereto in such positions as are necessary to facilitate the vari'- ous operations to which said engine is subjected in the repair thereof. y
The invention more particularly relates to improved clamping means on said rota# table table and 'an improved mounting of said table on the base of t-he machinewhere by the table can be non-rotatably held ina plurality ofpositions.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will appear as the description of the accompanying drawings proceeds, in which'- Fig. 1 is a side elevation oi the improved Fig. 3 is a section through the Yrotatable` table and associated parts taken on the line 3 3 ot Fig. 2,'and showing the engine in another position in dotted lines; Y Y

The improved ymotor 'stand comprises a base 6 having secured thereto by bolts the bed 7. The bed 7 has mounted on one end thereof a vise 8 which does not form 'a part of this invention and on the other end thereof is mounted a table y9 which is mounted for rotation on the bed 7 The Vrevolving table v9 which serves as a support 'for anfengine cylinder block is provided with a number of projections to suitably support the engine block in various positions. The projections 13 and 14 being on opposite sides of the flange hold the cylinder frommovement transversely Vof the support.
In order to iirmly i clamp the cylinder block to the support 'al clamping member 15 is provided. The clamping member 15 has a hook-"shaped veiitreniitv 16 that engages over the inner edge of the opening in the base 'of ythe 'cylinder' yblock and at its other end. is proi'fidedkwith a "downwardly "eX- tending projection 17`fthat 'bears on the supporting member y9. rlhe 'clamping member Y 15 is provided with 'a clamping scrett7 18 having screw threaded engagement withthe clamping member and "on the lower end por'- tion of the clampingscr'ew 11S is mounted a square block 19 which is 'suit-ably keyed thereto to prevent rotation between the block 19 and screw 18. The screw 18 extends through slot rk20 inv tliieengine supporting table 'and this slot has 'an `enlargement 21 through which the block 19 'may be i'n-y sert'ed or withdrawn'in order to eithery place the 'clamping member 15 in V'position or toremove the same from the engine supporting table. -f p It will be noted 'tl'iat'the shank portion of the hoolcend 16 'of the clampinguinem'- ber 15 shown in Fig; 3 is somewhatshorter than'that 'shown on` the hook end 16 of the clamping memberjl 'in Fig. 1w, it being necessary to have clampingfmembers with differentr lengths of the hook portions in order to clamp the engine cylinder block in various positions.
It'will be seen'th'at with the arrangement described one ofy these clamping members can be readily removed and another :one substituted tort-he same. I
W'hen the 4engine is in the rposition*shown in Fig. 1 .the same ris vinan inverted lposiix tion with the upper ends of the cylinders down. VVhen in this position vthe motor rests on the lugs 13 and on the lug 22, thus giving a three point support for the lengine. It will be noted that in this position of the engine the lug 14 does not contact with any portion of the engine as thesame is shorter than the lugs 13. The hook end 16 of the clamp 15 used when the engineV is in this position engages under the projecting waterjacket 23l of the engine cylinder bloclrto securely hold the same onthe which is adapted to seat in a corresponding recess 27 in the bed 7. This permits the table 9 to rotate in the circular socket 27 on the bed. The table 9 is also provided with a circular rib or rim 28 andv the bed 7 is provided with a corresponding rib or rim 29 facing-the rib 28. The rib 29 is provided with recesses 30, of which any suitable number may be provided, four being shown in the drawings, and a rib 28 is provided with projections 31 corresponding in number to the recesses 30 and adapted to seat therein when the'same are in alignment.
Thebed 7 is also provided with la downwardly extending elongated extension 32 provided with an opening to receive a bolt 33 which bolt extends through an opening 34 in the table 9 and has a square head 35 seated in a corresponding recess in the table 9 to hold the bolt against rotation relative to thetable 9. The lower end of the bolt 33 is screw threaded and is provided with a'hand wheel 36 which is internally screw threaded and adapted to engage against the extremity of the project-ion 32.
It will thus be seen that when the lugs or projections 31 are seated in the recesses 30 and the hand wheel 36 is turned so as to draw down the table 9 relative to the bed 7, the projections will'be iirmly seated in .the recesses and will'hold the table 9 from rotation about its pivot. This provides a very secure clamping means Vthat does not require the exertion of any great amount of force to actuate the same. It will be seen that with thenuinber of projections and recesses provided four different positions of the table are possible and that the number of different. possible positions can be increased depending upon the number of lugs and projections used and the proper spacing of the same.
It will thus be seen that a rotatable engine supporting table is provided that can be suitably locked in a plurality of different positions and which is adapted to hold the engine cylinder block thereon in a plurality of l positions.
It is also seen that a clamping means for the engine cylinder block is provided, which is readily interchangeable to permit its use with the position of the engine cylinder block forwhich it is suitable.
Having thus describedmy invention l desire to have it understood that l do not Vintend to limit myself to the particular forms shown and described except as defined by the following claims: Y

A device of the character described comprising a horizontal, rotatably mounted bed, projections rigid with the bed and distributed thereon to support an engine cylinder block in a yplurality of positions, a detachable clamping. element and means for guiding said clamping element whereby the same is longitudinally slidably mounted in said bed for clamping said cylinder block thereto, sai'dclamping Velement and bed being provided with cooperating means to limit the outward sliding movement of said element.V y i 2. A device of the character described comprising a bed, projections on said bed distributed thereon to support an engine cylinder block in a plurality of positions, and a detachable clamping element longitudinally slidably mounted in said bed for clamping said cylinder block against certain of said projections, said clamping element having an angular jaw portion having a plurality of facesengaging said cylinder block.
3. A device of the character described comprising a bed, projections on said bed and distributed thereonv to support an engine cylinder block in a plurality of positions, and a detachable vclamping element longitudinally,slidably mounted in said bed for clamping said cylinder block thereto in ,each of said positions, said clamping element and bed beingprovided with cooperating stops to limit the outward sliding movement of said element.

said bed being provided with a slot therein and a clamping member on said bed having a projecting portion extending through said slot, and a block on said projecting portion whereby said clamping member is mounted for guided longitudinal sliding movement on said bed, said clamping element and bed having cooperating stops to limit the sliding movement of said element in an outward direction.

A device of the character described comprising a bed, projections on said bed for supporting an engine cylinder block, said bed being provided with a slot therein having an enlargement at one end thereof, and a detachable clamping member on said bed having a projecting portion extending through said slot, and an angular block on said projecting portion adapted to be passed through the enlargement in said slot, whereby said clamping member is detachably mounted for guided longitudinal sliding movement on said bed.
7. A device of the character described comprising a bed, projections on said bed for supporting an engine cylinder block, said bed bein provided with a slot therein having an en argement at one end thereof and a detachable clamping member on said bed having a rojecting portion extending through said s ot, and an angular block on said projecting portion adapted to be passed through the enlargement in said slot, whereby said clamping member is detachably mounted for guided longitudinal sliding movement on said bed, said enlargement being at the end of said slot adjacent said projections.
8. A device of the character described comprising a bed, means on said bed to support an engine cylinder block in a plurality of positions, said supporting means having a cylindrical extension on its under side and,
said bed having a circular recess cooperating therewith to rotatably mount said supporting means on said bed, and means for positively locking said supporting means on said bed in a plurality oi' positions, said means comprising cooperating projections and recesses on said supporting means and bed.
9. A device of the character described comprising a bed, means on said bed to support an engine cylinder block in a plurality of positions, said supporting means having a cylindrical extension on its under side and said bed having a circular recess cooperating therewith to rotatably mount said supporting means on said bed, a bolt non-rotatably mounted in said supporting means, and a hand wheel having screw threaded engagement with said bolt and adapted to engage a portion of said bed to clamp said supporting means on said bed.
10. A device of the character described comprising a bed, means on said bed to support an engine cylinder block in a plurality of positions, said supporting means having a cylindrical extension on its under side and said bed having a circular recess cooperating therewith to rotatably mount said supporting means onsaid bed, said bed and supporting means having cooperating recesses and projections and clamping means to seat said projections in said recesses, whereby said supporting means can be locked against rotation in a plurality of positions.
11. In a device of the character described,
a bed, a rotatable table mounted on said bed,
said bed having a circular recess therein, a central downwardly extending cylindrical extension on said table seated in said recess and having a central bore, a circular rim on said table concentric with said extension, a similar rim on said bed, said rims having cooperating recesses and projections, a bolt mounted in said bore and extending through said bed, means to hold said bolt against rotation, and a hand wheel having screw threaded engagement with said bolt, whereby said projections are caused to seat in said recesses to hold said table against rotation on said bed in a plurality of positions.
12. A device of the character described comprising a bed, projections rigid with said bed and distributed thereon to support an engine cylinder block in a plurality of positions, and a clamping ele-ment longitudinally slidably mounted in said bed, said clamping element having a depending projection and said block having a lip adapted to be engaged by said projection to limit the outward siding movement of said element.
18. A device of theV character described comprising a bed, projections on said bed for supporting an engine cylinder blocli thereon, and a member for clamping said cylinder block on said bed comprising a body portion and a holding jaw having cylinder block engaging faces extending substantially at right angles to each other.
14. A device of the character described comprising a bed, projections on 4said bed for supporting an engine cylinder block thereon, and a member for clamping said cylinder block on said bed comprising a body portion and a holding jaw having a portion extending substantially at right angles to said body portion and an overhanging lip extending substantially at right angles to said irst mentioned portion.
