To all whom t may concern:

ABe it known that I, EDWARD K. MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, yhave invented certain new and useful Improve-n.

.a blank that is so shaped as to reduce the loss of material to the minimum.

Another object is to provide a box having integral bottom and top portions foldable together to close the box and which are collapsible within the minimum space so that the device can be stacked with other boxes in a relatively small space.

A further object is to provide a simple and efiicient handle that also constitutes means for holding the box closed.

A still further object is to provide a box of this character that is simple and durable and can be readily set up for use and easily collapsed.

4With the 'foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combina tions of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described andv pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

' Side flaps Referring to the figures b characters of reference, 1 designates a su stantially rectangular blank of card-board or other suitable material provided near its sides 'with longitudinal score lines 2 and 3. Transverse score lines 4 and 5 connect the lines 2 and 3 near the center of the blank and additional transverse score lines 6 and 7 connect the score lines 2 and 3 near the ends of the blank. Slits 8 are cut into the sides of the blank 1 up to the line 2 and along line 3, thereby to form intermediate reinforcing fiaps 9. V-shaped'incisions 10 are cut into the sides of the blank near one end, one wall of each incision being in line with line 6 while the other walls of the incisions 10 extend diagonall to the adjacent corners of the blank, t ereby forming triangular flaps 11 between the end of the blank, the incisions 10 and the l-ines 2 Aand 3 respectively. Side flaps 12 are formed between the flaps 9 and the incisions 10 and are bendable along the lines 2 and 3; Those ends of the flaps 12 nearest the flaps 11 are formed with diagonal score lines 13 disposed substantially at right angles to the diagonal walls of the incisions 10, thereby providing triangular corner flaps 14.

That portion of the blank between the flaps 11 constitutes an end flap 15 and has a central opening 16 connected by oppositely extending' alining slits 17 to small openings 1.8 spaced equally from the openhat portion of the blank 1 between the lines 4 and 5 constitutes the bottom portion of the box and is designated at 19. It. will be noted that those sides of the flaps 9 alining with the portions cut olf diagonally, as shown at 20. 21 are formed by the blank 1 between the flaps 9 and one end of the blank and the score line 7 intersects these flaps 21. Thus the lines 7, 2 and 3 cooperate with the edges of the blankto define rectangular corner portions 22 each of which is intersected by va score line 23 extending diagonally from the inner to the outer corner of the said portion.

That portion 28 of the blank between the score lines 7 and 26 constitutes a top portion of the box.

Tn forming a box from the blank described the end flap 24 is folded onto the top portion .28 and fastened thereto by staples 29 or the like, as shown .in Figures 2 and 4. A cord 30 is secured in the match*- ing openings 27 and the blank is ready to be folded, to form the cover portion. This is done by first bending the blank on line 7 and then along the lines 2 and 3. The corner portions 22 will fold along the diagonal lines 23 thereby to form triangular folds that can be'tucked between the ends of the lap 24 and top portion 28. See Figures 3 and 4. The flaps 11 and 15 are bent on line 6 until the diagonal edges of the flaps 11 register with the score lines 13 and the flaps 11 and 14 lap. These lapping' flaps are fastened together with staples 31 as shown in Figure 3. The flaps 9 are folded inwardly at 9 and rest on the bottom portionI 19. Thus when the cover section 32 is swung toward the body section 33 of the box to close it the sides`21, which preferably have rounded corners 34 as shown, enter between the side flaps' 12, the cut away portions 20 allowing the parts to fold together without danger of tearing the material at The top portion 28' enters back of the top portion 15 and the cord 30 is formed into a loop that isA inserted outwardly through the opening 16. By then pulling on the loop the sides thereof w1ll slip laterally through the slits 17 and enter the openings 18. Thus the cover can be fastened in closed position and the entire box can be carried conveniently.

By opening the box. the folds 22 can be removed from engagement with the end flap 24 after which the connected flaps 11 and 14 can be folded together on the score lines 13 and the top flap 15 folded down on the inwardly folded side flaps 12. Thus the box can be compactly stored or stacked, as will be' obvious. What is claimed is 1. A paper box having a bottom and a top each provided with a front side, the

' front side of the top .overlapping the front side of the bottom and being provided intermediate its ends with a longitudinal slit, and havingv a large central finger opening Y and end openings wherewith the slit communicates, the front side of the bottom being provided with astring handle secured at each end to said front side at points opposite the said end openings, said large cenline, square corner flaps formed integrally with said end and front flaps and defined therefrom by fold lines, said corner iilaps having each a diagonal fold line extending from the angle of the corner flap nearest the' main bottom portion to the opposite angle of said corner flap, a rectangular back flap extending entirely across the rear edge of the main bottom portion and defined therefrom by a fold line, a rectangular main top portion extending from the back flap, said main top portion being coextensive in length with the back flap and defined therefrom by a fold line, top end flaps of rectangular shape at the ends of the main top portion and dened therefromkby fold lines, said top and flaps being of the same width as the bottom end flaps, square back corner flaps at the ends of the said back Hap and' defined therefrom and from the bottom end flap by slits and from the top end flaps by fold lines, said top end flaps having diagonal fold lines at their front corners extending from the front corners of the main top port-ion at forty-five degrees to the outer edges of the respective end flaps, a rectangular top front flap extending entlrely across the front edge of the main top portion and dened therefrom by a fold line, said top front flap having a centrally disposed nger opening and slits leading from'opposite points of the opening and terminating in small cord receiving openings, top front corner flaps at the ends of the top front flap each being of right angled triangular form and having one of the sides opposite the hypotenuse integral with the top front flap and defined therefrom by a fold line, the hypotenuse of )EDWARD K.
