To a-ll whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, Joli M'ERVIN', a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstownin the county of Gambit-e and State of Pennsylvania, have invented 'ceftain new and usefiil Improvements in Check Hangers for Mine Cars, of wh-i-eh the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices" for se curing identification eheclis to mine" eaisi It is common practice, whereihineoere ai'e used, for the minere' to attach idefiti fiea'tion checks 'to' the cars, when they re filled with me, coal" 01'' other s'uhs'tafi'c's, foithe info'fmati'on of the check weighmm. These cars, When I'ieW' are supplied Wi'tii Wire nails or hooks 'for' the 'pnipose of secu'i'i'ng the checks to the cars, but these Wife hooks soon' break off, maki g it ecessary for the miners to secure the cheeks by means of wires rapped or tiedto some portion'o'f the ear, thereby neoes'sit wtihg a loss of; time as well as making it inconvenient for a check w'eighm'arn to remove the eh'e'e'lz'e when thus secured. s V
It isfliere'fore the principal objects of thi's'invention to overcome fliesejdisadv'a nt ge's and objections by providing devices wi'i'ieh may be secured to si'desfof mine eaf's afidwhioh will efi eotiy'elyhoid cheeks; and, to provide devices of the above mentioned character" to Which cheeks may easily be attahed' 'o'I' seeu'ied to oai 's, and conveniently removed: therefrom whet desired.
Further objects and" advantages Win appear in the following" d'e'ta'iIedflescripti'on, taken in connection with th'eeo'eom'panying drawing, fermion a part of this speeifioation, and in, white drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a mineoa'r equipped with a check holder constructed a'ee'o'rding to my invention. a V
Figure -2 is an enl afged front vi ew of the cheek holder, an", I v v i F igure 3 is a longitudinal" seetion thm the 'same', showing it" attached to a ment of a mine car. H I
In the drawings, 'Wh'e'rein" for the put- ,poss of'i'llustratiofiis shown theprfetied embodiment of my invention and wherein simila'r'referen'ce characters designate obi responding parts th'rou'gho'i'i't the views, the let-ter- A- -indioa-tes a mine car; B, an identification check; and G, a check holder comprising a bracket D; an arm E, and means F for operating said arm.
o f the oheokholifleri C, it preferably is "seeii "d t0 the side 0 of the car A by suitable fa"ef1" ete h pessingitghrotigh the breoket; Dja ends" thefe'of. intermediate jpofti'o i provided b tween the" r ets T end in epzte'ed rel'iti'o'n t'o theoai sij '5'. a This iiiimmediate p oiition be? foifined' by having" a portion 10 extending outfit; from point adjacent the one end 9' the 'ai'cifate portion 1 12 being p ovided with a slot 13 which defines" a pair oi' 'lips'ilgt" and 15" 'I'espeotiye1y, the p po'se of Whieh Wili hereinafter. meme port 1" is themformetl inwardiy as'a't lo' t w 1 the oaTfsidef5'iintil' a portion 17 'a'o't's with the side 5, said" oonta'eting' {Ibe'is bei'hgl seemed together by anothei rivet '7. This extenei-ori jle ma hav e tiensyerse pei'foration'i20; there-thin;
The arm may be pivoted intermedii t'i its ends between the lips 14 L11d' fl 5"0fthe br ke D by me p n 2 p s n th'eiethroi'i'gh The'jon'e end of the arm E may 7 piovided 'W'itii a hook oi cateh' defining a movable jaw and Whichl isl adapted to projectinto the perforationQOof the extension 19'. rivete 7, said fiv'ete V will then force the arm E forat-ion 6 therein aligns with the extension 19 when it is desired to place a check therebetween. The arm E may also be provided with a perforation 25 intermediate the hand piece 2e and the pivotal; connection 21. 7
Referring now to the means F for operating the arm E, that is, for normally urging the hook 22 of the arm E toward the extension 9 or into clamping relation with said extension 19 when a check B is interposed therebetween, it is herein shown as a coil spring 26 seated on the portion ll of the bracket D. A screw or bolt 27 may be threaded into the seat 11, extending through the coil spring 26 and perforation 25 in the arm E, thereby preventing the spring from displacement and acting as a guide for the arm E. It is obvious that other means could be employed for the above purpose and such as is illustrated is merely by way of example. H
When it is desired to use a device such as has been described in combination with a mine car, a miner or other persondesiring to attach an identification check to the car takes the check in one hand and with the other hand pushes inwardly on the hand piece 24, thus moving the hook 22 away from the extension 19 of the bracket D. The check is then placed so that the perwith the perfo- 19, and the hand The spring 26 so that the check B will be held by the hook 22 securely against the extension 19 and in spaced re lation to the car side 5. When the car A reaches. the check weighman he merely has to grasp the check 13 and exert a downward pull and the check will slip over the inclined face 23 of the hook 22 and will be detached from the device C. By using such a device a check may be attached to a mine car so as to always be in the line of vision for inspection, not rendering it necessary for an inspector or check weighman to hunt all over the car before finding the check.
It is obvious that such a check holder A may be used for purposes other than on mine cars, but it is primarily intended for use with such. 7
Changes in details may be made to the form of the invention herein shown and deration 20 of the extension piece 24: 1S then released.
scribed without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
