Application filed. September 22, 1921. Serial No. 502,555.
'0 aZZ '107mm it may concern:
Be it known thatA I, Ennnsr A. GosNnLL, a citizen of the United Statesv resi'ding at Burkburnett, in the county of Wichita and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to newanduseful improvements in clamps: of the type wherein their grip is increased upon an object during any tendency of the object to free itself from the clamp, and one which will effectively retain its grip upon an object after being engaged therewith. j
Another object of the invention is to provde a clamp embodying a movable gripping jaw or wedge and means associated there- 'with for guiding and placing the jaw in cooperative relation with the. clamp to grip an object.
Other objects andadvantages ofthe invention will become apparent during` the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming -a part of the application and wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, V
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the clamp,
Figure 3 is a bottom plan and F igure 4- is an end elevation of the body portion or Cooperation jaw portion.
In the drawing' wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred emof the wedg'e,
bodiment of my invention, the numeral 5V designates a jaw or body portion which consists of a snbstantially square base piece 6 having its top face 7 provided with a longitudinally extending groove 8. Extending upwardly from the base and along opposite longitudinal edges thereof are a pair of `'ifuide fianges 9 which by beingr equipped with outwardly and downwardly inclined inner walls 10 provide the body portion with a longitudinally extending dove tail passage as clearly seen. Each flange 9 is provided with an inwardly extending lip portion 11, it being noted that the longitudinal inner edges of these lip portions are arranged in spaced parallel relation for a purpose which Will presently appear. The surface 7 of -ranged bead or raised portion 14f` the lon- `gitudinal edges of which are adapted to slidably engage the long'itudinal inner edges of the flange lips 11. The under face of the wedge .is provided with a centrally arranged longitudinally extending' groove 15, the walls of which are rourhened or knurled for gripping purposes. The underface of the i i wedge along` its longitudinal edges thereof is grooved as at 16 to cooperate with the grooves'12 of the body portion to form passages for the wedge Operating means which -will now be described.
'This wedge Operating means consists ,of a substantially U-shaped member 17, the arms 18 of which are adapted to extend in parallel relationship and to slide in the grooves 12 of the body portion. The free end of each arm I18 is provided with a head 19 which is rigidly secured theretovto form abutments for engae'ement with the large end Of the wedg'e 13. hook or any other form of attaching device, 20 may be associated with the arched portion of the wedge mover 17 for the purpose of anchoring the clamp to an object. In the present instance, the hook 20 consists of a single strand of material having its intermediate portion formed into an eye 21 through which is adapted to pass the wedge mover 17. The hook is also provided with a pair of approXim-ately parallel arms, each terminating in a hoolr'portion 22 as clearly seen. The numeral 23 designates a rod upon which the device is clamped and it wil] of course be obvious that the rod may be substituted for a cable or any other object upon which a grip is desired to be attained.
Figure 1 illnstrates the invention in an assembled position with the wedge 13 properly Vassociated with the body portion to `firmly grip the rod 23 and maintain the clamp in fixed relation thereto. However,
2 w 1,41o,8o4
when it is desired to remove the wedge, to cause the device to release its grip upon the rod, the wedge lever 17 is caused to slide in the clamp so that its arched portion will abut the small end of the wedge and cause its removal from the dove tail passage through the body portion whereby the' grip formerly eXerted upon the rod 23 is released.
To assemble the wedge in the dove tailed passageof the body portion, the wedge' mover 17 is moved so as to dispose the heads V19 remote from the body portion whereby the wedge may be positioned upon the arms of the mover and also upon the rod28 adapted to be gripped Vby the device. The mover is then actuated to cause the head 19 thereof to abut the wedge and slide it into the dove tail channel of the body portion 5 where it will be firmly gripped by the walls of the the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is:
1. A clamp comprising a body portion, a wedge mover slidably mounted in the body portion, and a wedge carried by said mover and adapted for Cooperation with the body sportion, said mover having 'means at either having a vwedge recelving pocket therein, a
wedge 'adapted to be received in'said pocket, and a wedge mover slidably mounted in the Apocket and adJusted to support the wedge when in an inoperative positlon.
3; AV clamp comprising a vbody portion, a wedge'mover-s'lidably associated therewith, and including a pair of spaced arms having heads at one end, and a wedge carried ;by said mover and adapted for cooperation with the body portion.
11'. A clamp comprising a body por-tion, 'a wedge mover slidably associated therewith and comprising a U-shaped member, the arms of said member being arranged in spaced relation and equipped with heads, and a Wedge removably associated with said member and adapted for Cooperation with the body portion;
5. A elam'p comprising a body portion having a channel extending therethrough, a wedge adapted to be received in said channel, and a wedge mover slidably lassociated with the channel and consisting of a U- shapec 'member the arched portion of which is engaged with one end of the wedge for displacing the same from the body portion,
and the free ends of the.U-shaped member L being provided with heads adapted for engagement with the other end of the wedge whereby it can be moved into .an operative position into the said channel. y
In testimony whereofI -affix mysignature in presence lof two wit-nesses.
