Application filed April is, 1920. sriai No. 374,451.

Be it linovvi'i that I, Roi'si'hir C ALLE a citi'zei o f the United States, and a resident of Essington, iii the county of Delaware and. State of Pennsylvania, have invented nets? arid iise'ful Imiovem'eht in Ma'neiiver} 111g Valves, of Which the 'foll'ovvin'g is a' specification. p p y This invention relates to valve mecha? nisin and particularly to that class'ofvalv'es" knowii as maneuvering valves" such as are generally used in cohtrol'lihg turbihesus'ed in ship propulsion, and has 'for'its' princia1 object the pr ducti n or a-valve mechanism wherein the maili tu'rb'i'he valve, the cru'isihg turbine valve and 'the' reversing turbi ii valve may he readily operated 'hy" means of a single operatihg mechanism or hand, vvh'ee'l v the production of a valvelnehhanism Wherei'ha plurality of valves are independently operated by movement of'an' operating mechahism ilropp'osite directions;
the production of a" simple, el'hci'eht and" durable valve ope'ratihg mech'a'iiism", and
= such other objects as may hereinafter appear. Qhe embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing WhereiI'i p p r a plan arid horizontal sectional' vifi'v of the valve mechanism shovvi'ng the valve an" levers with the upper portion of the structure removed;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 11-11 of Fig. 1 in the direbtioh of the arrows; and p i Fig. 3 is a .vertical section oh theline HIE-III of Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrolvs, v
Referri ig a) the drawings; the mm mechanism comprises a main valve 1, a
cruising valve 2 and a reversing val-v 3 scre'iv threaded the upper portion of cage rewl' ieh issecured to the valve chest in any suitable" manner. The purpose of the: spring" 13' is to yieldingly hold. the Valve hi clhsedi position as indicat'ecl in Figs?" and 3. The tension of thespring may be adjusted by the adjusting screw 15';
The main valve 1 and the cruising valve 2 are arranged inoiie group of valves betvveerrthisigrohp and the reversing: valve 3 ismouhted a horizontal shaft 17, which is carried upon brackets 18' secured to the steam che'st'c as'i'ng. A; valve operating lever 19. is pivoted to the shaft 17 so that it may oscillate thereabout', and this lever is provided With "a loose bearing member 20 sion' of the socket 12,sothat when the lever 19' is raised, it will cause the valve?) to be to be -moved-in a direction parallel with the shaft 17 by meansof a selector lock- 23, adapted to reciprocate in a direction parallel wvfith the shaft 17 upon a. guide 24 mounted upon the brackets 18 The-selector bar 22 :is provided with a depending tooth 25' which extends downwardly into anarcuategroove26 in-the upper suriaceof the sel'ector lock 23. The selector lock isadapted" to be-reciprocated by a lever 27 pivoted to the bracket 18 by a pivot pin 27 andthis-lever may beoperated by any siiitable rod 28 or bfyiother preferred means. It Will be seen that manipulation of the lever 27 ill cause the selector bar 22' to be moved'so as to protrude from eitherside of the short arm 21 of the bell: cranklever 19.
The main valve land the cruising valve 2 are-adapted to be operated by means of bell crank levers 29 and 30, respectively, which are of substantially similar constru'c ti'oh. The levers '29 and 30 are provided- Wi'th depending short arms-29a and"30a,;respe'cti'vely, which arms are adapted to align with the short arm 21 of the bell cran k levei 19 When the levers are in' neutral positon. Thelong arm of the levers 29 and 30 are each provided with a loose fitting bearthroug h Which the stem 1'1 of the valve 3' passes amt which engages the lower exam ing block 31 through which the stems 9 and 10 extend and engage the lower extension of the spring sockets 12 on the valve stems 9 and 10. When the levers 29 and are raised they will cause the valves 1 and 2 respectively tobe lifted from their seats and permit steam to flow through the ports 4 and 5 respectively to the main turbine and cruising turbine respectively. The short arms of the levers 29 and 30 are each provided with a Y shaped groove similar in contour to the T shaped selector bar 22 so that when the levers 29, 30 and 19 are in neutral position the selector bar 22 may be alternatively moved into the slots on the levers 29 and 30 so as to operatively connect alternately the levers 29 and 30 with the lever 19.
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that if the selector bar 2-2 is moved into operative connection with either of the levers 29 and 30 that downward .movement of the lever will cause upward movement of either lever 29 or 30, to which the lever 19 is at the time connected. This downward movement of the lever 19 will not affect the valve 3. Upward movement of the lever 19 will raise the valve 3, but will not operate either of the valves 1 and 2. It will be seen, therefore, any one of the three valves may be operated independently of the r maining valves by manipulation of the lever 19. This lever is operated by a link 32 pivoted to the free end of the lever 19 and to a screw block 33 suitably guided for vertical movement by any preferred form of guide means, not shown. A screw 3 1 mounted in suitable bearings, not shown, passes through the block and is rotated by means of a beveled gear carried by the lower end of the screw and which meshes with a similar bevel gear 36 operated by a rod 37 which carries at its end a hand wheel 38. Rotation of the screw 34 in one direction will cause upward movement of the valve 19 and rotation of the screw in the reverse direction will cause downward movement of the valve lever 19.
The operation of the valve mechanism is as follows: Assuming that the valves 1, 2 and 3 are in the closed position indicated in the figures and that the valve operating mechanism 29 and 30 are in their neutral positions as indicated in Fig. 2, and that it is desired to open the main valve without causing the opening of the cruising or reversing valves, this result may be accompishled by manipulating the lever 27 so that it will move the selector bar 22 int operative connection with the short arm 29a of the lever 29. After this connection has been made, the hand wheel 38 is rotated so as to cause downward movement of the screw block 33 which, in turn, causes clownward movement of the lever 19 and c0nsequent upper movement of the lever 29 controlling the main ahead valve 1. lff it is desired to cut out the main ahead turbine and use the cruising turbine, the hand wheel 38 is manipulated. so as to bring the valve lever 19 into neutral position at which time the main ahead valve will be closed. The selector lever 26 may then be manipulated so as to move the selector bar 22 to the left (see l ig. until it operatively connects the valve lever 19 with the: lever 30. The hand wheel 38 is then rotated so as to lower the lever 19 which operation will cause consequent upward movement of the lever 39 which controls the cruising valve 2.
lif it is desired t operate the reversing turbine, it will first be necessary to shut the valve which may be open to either the main ahead turbine or the cruising turbine, before the reversing valve is opened. To open the reversing valve the hand wheel 38 is reversed until the lever 19 has permitted the open main ahead valve or cruising valve, as the case may be, to close, and until the lever 19 is raised above neutral position i which action will cause the opening of the valve 3. It will be seen with this construction that it will be impossible to open the reversing valve 3' without first causing the main ahead valve or the cruising valve to be closed, and vice versa, so therefore a perfectly safe arrangement is provided for the functioning of the valves.
While l have shown my invention in but one form, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various other changes and modifications, without departing from the spirit thereof, and l desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereupon as are imposed by the prior art or as are specifically set forth in the appended claims.
