To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. NEWTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Flush-Tank- Operating Devices; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1 a broken or plan view of the outside of a portion of a flush tank showing an operating handle attached thereto. Fig. 2 a sectional view showing the attachment of my operating device to a flush tank. Fig; 3 a view from the inside of the tank showing my improved operating device in its normal position. This invention relates to an improvement in flush tank operating devices, and particularly to the so called low-clown tanks, or tanks in which the valves are operated by a swinging handle as distinguished from tanks in which the valves are operated by a chain.
The object of this invention is to provide simple means whereby the valve may be operated by turning the handle in either direction, and by turning the handle to the same extent in either direction, and which will also provide a stop to limit the movement of the handle; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In illustrating my invention I have omitted the valve mechanism which forms no part of this invention, nor do I illustrate the tank other than a section thereof through which the spindle for the handle projects.
The valves for flush tanks are operated by a long lever 2 which is pivoted as at 3 to the tank, or, as herein shown, to an arm 4 of a bracket 5 attached to the tank. The outer end 6 of the lever is connected by a chain or wire (not shown) with the valve-operating mechanism. operating handle 9 carries a bar 10 to one end of which is attached a link 11, and to the other end a corresponding link 12. The link 11 has at its lower end a long slot 13 and the link 12 a corresponding slot 14: which sets over the stud or pin 7 on the end of the lever 2. By turning the handle 9 in either direction, the bar 10 is rocked so as to move the links 11 and 12 and lift the outer end of the lever. Thus, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, if the handle is turned to the left the link 11 will force the short end of the lever 2 downward and raise the outer end, and the lower end of the slot 14 in the link 12 will limit the extent of movement of the handle. In other words, the slot 1 1 forms a stop to limit the downward movement of the lever when depressed by the link 11. On the other hand, when the handle is turned to the right, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the link 12 will force the lever downward and the slot 13 in the link 11 will form a stop to limit this downward movement. The extent of movement of the lever is the same in either direction, and a stop is provided to prevent the handle from being turned beyond a point suflicient to open the valve, and the leverage is such that the movement of the handle necessary to trip the valve is the same whether turned to the right or turned to the left.
I claim 1. A flush tank operating device consisting of a spindle and a handle therefor, a bar connected with the inner end of said spindle, a link connected to each end of the said bar, said links formed with slots, and a pivotal valve-operating lever carrying a stud projecting through the said slots whereby the movement of the handle in either direction will turn the arm.
2. A flush tank operating device comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to the inner face. of a flush tank and formed at its lower end with an arm, a lever pivotally connected with said arm, a spindle passing through the upper end of said bracket, a handle secured to the outer end of said spindle, a bar secured to the inner end of said spindle, a link secured to each end of said bar, said links formed at their lower ends Patented Nov. 29, 1910.
