SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,683, dated January 24, 1882-.
Application tiled June G, 1881. (No model.)
all whom it may concern: L
Be it known that I, LoUIs C. LUGMAYR, ot' l/Vater Valley, in the county of Yalabnsha and State ot'Mississippi, have invented certain uselul Improvements in Valve-Operating Mech,- anisms for Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of Iny invention is to woIlI the valves of steam-engines for cutting ol' with Io one eccentric, and also allow reversal of the engine with the saine mechanism.
rlhe invention consists in a slide-block vcounected with the eccentric and valve rod and carried by a guide pivoted to swing for shitting the valve, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure lisa side elevation ot'a vertical engine fitted with the improved valve mechanism. Fig. 2 is a sectional side zo view ofthe same with the valve mechanism in reverse position, and Fig. b is an illustrative diagram of the mechanism.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
B is the crank-shaft of the engine, provided with crankarm d, from which a rod, k, passes to the piston-slidej'.
A is an eccentric on shaft B, provided with ajstrap, p, from which an arm, q, extends in a 3o plane parallel with the plane ot' crank-arm d.
-i' is a rod from the'cccentiic-arm q to the valve-stem c.
.In suitable bearings on the bed-plate ofthe engine is fitted a rock-shaft, g, provided with a. hand-lever, h, whereby the shattcan begiven a quarter-revolution, more or less. The handlever moves at the side ot' a segment-plate, o, that is provided with pins for engaging the lever and retaining it in position as moved. 4o On the end of shaft g is a guide, L, carrying a slide-block, R, to which the end ot' the eccentricarm q is pivoted at c. The guide L is a. T- piece on the end ot' the shaft, titted with sliderods i z', that are engaged by lugs m, projecting from block R. By means of the lever h and rock-shaft the guide L can be swung to bring the pivot c of theeccentric-arm above orbelow the axis on which the slide turns. The, two extreme positions are shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and by the lines a a and b b in Fig. 3, thus 5o shifting the valve. These positions give a cutoft" at full-stroke, and it will be understood that by placingthe slide at intermediate points the cutoi is regulated as required. In either position of the guide the revolution ot' shaft B moves the eccentric-arm q in and out. The slide R consequently moves back and forth on the guide L, and the valve-rod and valve are thus moved. rlhe extent of movement of the valve is dependent upon the inclination ot' the guide, 6o and the shortest Amovement would occur with the gnidein a middle position o1 projecting in a straight line with the eccentricarm.
I do not limit myself to the described means for sustaining the guide, as it may be pivoted to any suitable supports.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to opcrate the valves of a steam -engine with one eccentric, the same being shown in the English vPatent No. 3,170 ot' 1875; but 7o What Iclaim, and desire to secure by Let- Aters Patent, is-
LOUIS CHARLY IIUGMAYR.
