T0 all z/J/iom t may concern:
Be it known that I,`ERNEST W. FRED- RicKsoN, a `citizen of the United States, residing at Kinbrae, in the county of Nobles and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Door-Lock Escutcheons, of which the following is a specication.
The present invention relates to an attachment for a door lock escutcheon and has for its principal object to provide means for preventing the removal of the key tothe door lock when desired.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which may be readily placed upon the ordinary escutcheon without much trouble.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which will be simple and eflicient in construction, reliable, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
IVith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure l is a front elevation of an escutcheon showing my invention applied thereto.
Figure ,2 is a rear elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a detail sectionY taken therethrough, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the elements forming the attachment showing the same disassembled.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that an ordinary escutcheon or guard plate is show at l being provided with the usual key hole-2 and I form a transversely extending slot 3 therein disposed above the key hole 2. A headed pin 4 piercesfthe slot 3 so as te be movable therein and supports the elements of the attachment.
The attachment includes a plate 5 which is preferably of sheet metal and square inV formation. 'This plate 5 is constructed with an aperture 6 for receiving the pin 4 and with a keyhole 7 having a slot 8 projecting transversely therefrom and communicating therewith. A lguide bar 9 is attached to the rearface of the escutcheon 1 above the slot 3 and is preferably secured by solder or the like. The upper edge -of the plate 5 is adapted to abut the under edge of this guide bar 9 thus preventing any tendency of the plate 5 to rotate when the pin 4 is moved in mtas the slot 3 and it will be seen that the plate 5 will move with the pin so that the key hole 7 will come in and out of registry with the key hole 2. In order to strengthen the attachment and aid the eliiciency of operation thereof a` brace plate or washer 10 is provided with a central aperture ll for receiving the pin 4 and is disposed to rest on the rear face of the plate 5 and on the bar 9 as is illustrated to advantage in Figure 2. This plate l() is formed of suitable spring material and has a certain braking effect upon the attachment which is accomplished by constructing the bar 9 with a slightly greater thickness than the plate 5 so that the plate 10 will slightly bind upon the bar 9 tending to resist movement of the pin 4 and plate 5 so that when the plate is moved to a desired position it will not be possible for an unauthorized person to move the same. This is especially desirable in that the plate 5 is prevented from moving when the door is slammed.
Vhen the attachment is positioned as disclosed in Figure 2, it being understood that the escutcheon shown is on the inside of the door, the key may readily be inserted into the lock. When the key is inserted and it is desired to retain the key in the door lock so that a key cannot be inserted from the exterior, the plate 5 is moved to the dotted line position shown in Figure 2 through the intermediacy of the pin 4.'
Then in thisdotted line position the shank of the key will project through the slot 8 but cannot be removed from the lock as is evident. V
I have, in the present instance, shown and described the preferred embodiment of thev vdevice which will give in practice satis;
factory and reliable results, and it .is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined in the claim or sacrilicing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is Y In combination, an escutcheon including a key hole, a slot, a pin projected through the slot, a plate mounted 'on the pin and provided With a key hole and a slot projecting therefrom, said pin being movable to actuaire the plate so that its key hole may be placed in and out of registry with the key hole of che escucheon, a reeilieht plaie carried by the pin, a guide bar fastened to the eseut'eheon, said resilient plate adapted to'beer on said bar so as to brake the movement of the first mehtioiied plate ivhereby l0 accidental movement thereof Will be prevented.
In testimony whereof I allix my Signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ERNEST WV. FREDRICKSON. lVitnesses S. M. KNUTSON, J. `W. LEOPARD.
