To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PETERS, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Huntington, Long Island, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rubber Holders for Cylinders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cylinder knives or cutting devices for cutting paper, cloth or the like by passing the paper .or cloth be tween two cylinders or rollers, one of the cylinders being provided with a knife or blade member, and the other with a piece of rubber into which the knife or blade member is adapted to pass in cutting the paper or cloth, and the invention consists primarily in the form of holder and rubber which I employ, and the method of mounting the holder in a cylinder or the periphery thereof; and the object of my invention is to provide a device of the class and for the purpose specified which is'simple in construction, of-
ficient in use and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are deslgnated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Fig. 1 is an end view of parts of two cylinders or rollers showing my improvement mounted in connection with one of said cylinders or rollers;
Fig. 2 a plan view of a part of one of the cylinders shown in Fig. 1 and showing my improvement mounted therein;
Fig. 3 a longitudinal section through that part of the cylinder in which my improve ment is mounted.
Fig. 4 a partial section on the line 44 of Fig. 3 with one of the parts of the device detached;
Fig. 5 a perspective detail view of the rubber which I employ;
Fig. 6 a view similar to Fig. 3 but looking at the opposite side of the holder; and,
Fig. 7 a section on the line 77 of Fig. 6.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing I have shown at 10 a cylinder or roller provided with a rectangular recess 11 in the periphery thereof,
and at 12 have shown another roller or cylinder which carries a cutter blade 13 and a number of projecting pins 14, one of which is shown in Fig. 7 of the drawing, and a sheet of paper or the like 15 is adapted to be passed between the rollers .or cylinders 10 and 12 to be cut at predetermined points, and the pins 14 are adapted to hold the paper 15 in engagement with the roller as is usually the custom.
Mounted in the recess 11 of the roller 10 is my improved rubber holder 16 comprising a base plate 17 and side plates 18 and 19, the side plate 18 is secured to the base plate 17 by screws or other means 20 to form a substantially L-shaped frame and the side plate 19 is detachably mounted in connection with the base plate 11 by pins 21 on the base plate which enter correspondin apertures 22 in the side plate 19, as clear y shown in Figs. 3 and 4 to form a substantially boxshaped or longitudinal frame provided with a top opening 23. The side plates 18 and 19 are provided at the top with inwardly directed flanges 24 and 25 respectively, and mounted within the holder 16 is a rubber strip 26 approximately rectangular inv form in cross section, and the corner portions of which are cut out to formirabbet grooves 27 as clearly shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 7 of the drawing. The flanges 24 and 25 are adapted to enter two of the rabbet grooves 27 of the rubber strip 26.
The frame or holder 16 is closed at one end as shown at 28 and the top face thereof is cut away as shown at 29 to receivea transverse strip 30 secured to the periphery of the cylinder 10 by screws 31, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and at the other end portion of the holder 16 the base plate 17 is extended as shown at 32 and the side plates 18 and 19-are cut away and a screw 33 is passed through the extension 32 of the base plate and into the cylinder 10 for securing the holder 16 in position.
It. will be understood that the plate 30 is fixed to the cylinder 10 and in the use of my improvement one of the rubber strips 26 is placed in the holder 16 with the parts in the position shown. in Fig. 4, after which the side plate 19 is placed in position and the holder with the rubber strip therein, or the closed end portion thereof, is placed beneath the strip 30 and in the recess 11 of the cylinder 10, after which the other end portion is secured to the cylinder by the screw 33. It will be noted that the top face of the side plate 18 of the cylinder is pro vided with spaced recesses 3a which are adapted to receive thepins 14, as clearly shown in Fig. 7 of the drawing, and after the face of the rubber strip 26 which is exposed through the top of the holder has been used sufficiently, or shows signs of wear, the holder may be removed and another one of the faces of said strip may be exposed through the top of the holder, this may be done four times with the strip which I employ thus materially extending the life of the strip. It will be apparent that as the knife or cutter blade 13 is projected from the cylinder or roller 12 it penetrates into the exposed face of the rubber strip 26, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 7, and after considerable use the exposed face or the cut therein becomes ragged and it becomes necessary to expose a new rubber face.
It will be understood that I am not necessarily limited to any specific method of carrying my invention into effect, the distinctive features residing in the holder for the rubber strip 26, which holder is provided with one detachable part which may be quickly and easily attached and detached, whenever desired, and the holder and rubber strip which is constructed so as to permit of the exposure and use of the four faces of said strip in the holder, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made,

without departing from the spirit of my in vention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A holder for a resilient strip which is rectangular in form in cross section and the corner portions of which are cut out to form rabbet grooves, said holder being approximately of channel formation and being pro vided with flanges adapted to enter two of the rabbet grooves of said strip for holding said strip against displacement in said holder.
2. A holder for a resilient strip which is rectangular in form in cross section and the corner portions of which are cut out to form rabbet grooves, said holder being approximately of channel formation and being provided with flanges adapted to enter two of the rabbet grooves of said strip for holding said strip against displacement in said holder, said holder being composed of detachably conne cted parts to facilitate the inounting of said strip therein.
3. In a device for mounting resilient strips in cylinders, an elongated rectangular resilient strip, the corner edges of said stri 3 being cut away to form rabbet grooves which extend longitudinally of the strip, the transverse dimensions of each of the four faces of the strip being considerably greater than the corresponding dimensions of the grooves in said strip and said grooves serving to facilitate the mounting and retaining of the strip in a suitable holder in four different positions.
