CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS SASH Application fiIecl September The present invention relates to sash guides of the detachable side wall type disclosed in Patents Nos. 1,659,657 and 1,659,658, and is concerned particularly with the manner in which the detachable side wall is held in position.
The object of the invention is to provide,
in a sash guide of the type described, im-
proved means for holding the detachable side wall in position.
One form of the invention is presented herein by way of exemplification, but as will be evident to those skilled in the art, the invention is capable of embodiment in other structurally different forms coming equally within the scope of certain of the claims.

It will be observed in the drawing that the sash guide consists of a fixed strip and a detachable strip 11. The strip 10 is adapted to be attached to the jamb of a window frame by screws or other suitable means, and is provided at one side with a groove 12 and at the other side with a fixed side Wall 13. If it is desired to have a guide from which a sash may be removed from either side, the fixed side wall 13 may be dispensed with, and another groove, similar to the groove 12, may be pro vided at that side of the strip in place of the fixed side wall.
The strip 10 is made of sheet metal, andis bent in such a way as to form the groove 12, the fixed side wall 13 and an intervening web 14. The strip 10 obviously may be bent in a great many other different ways to pro vide the portions described.
The strip 11 constitutes a removable side wall opposite the fixed side wall 13, and is seated within the groove 12. The portion of the strip 11 within the groove is provided 2 .with a spring strip 15, which is soldered or GUIDE 13, 1928. Serial No. 305,689.
secured in any suitable fashion to the inner edge of the strip and extends at an angle from the same.
When the guide is not occupied by a sash, the strip 11 will assume the canted position shown in Fig. 5, but, when a sash is in place in the guide, the strip 11, upon being inserted in the groove in the strip 10, will be held by the side of the sash in a position generally parallel to the fixed side wall 13, in which position the strip 11 will be pressed resiliently against the sash by the strip 15.
The strip 11 is held in position in the groove 12 by means of bayonet slots 16 which are formed at intervals in the rear edge of the strip 11 and interlock with rivets 17 which are positioned at corresponding intervals across the groove 12. After the strip 11 has been shifted rearwardly in the groove and then downwardly into interlocked engagement with the rivets 17 it is held against upward movement by means of a latch 18, in the provision of which latch the invention primarily resides.
The latch 18 consists of a finger 19 which is secured to a stud 20 and is provided with a nose 21'. The stud 20 is journaled in an aperture22 in the web 14 ofthe strip 10, and is provided with a countersunk head 28. The head 23 has a kerf 24 therein for coaction with a screw driver, and, when the head 23 is turned in one direction, the nose 21 on the finger 19 is swung through an aperture 25 in the side of the groove 12. The strip 11 is provided withan aperture 26 which registers with the aperture 25 when the strip 11 is in position, and the nose 21, after passing tl'irough the aperture 25 in the strip 10, enters the aperture 26 in the strip 11, effective 1y locking the strip 11 against movement. In order to prevent the nose 21 fromaccidentally working out of the a ierture 26 in the strip 11, the finger 19 is provided with a small projection 27 which presses resiliently against the rear face of the web 14 and snaps into an aperture 28 in that face when the latch is in locked position.
hen it is desired to remove a sash from the guide, it is merely necessary to raise the sash into a position wherein the head 23 of the latch is exposed in the channel of the guide, insert a screw driver in the kerf 2a of the head 23, turn the head to withdraw the nose 21 from the aperture 26 in the strip 11 and remove the released strip.
I claim:
1. In a sash guide, a removablesidewall, and a latch engageable with the removable side wall to hold the same in position.
'2. Ina sash guide,-a*removable side wall, and a latch engageable withthe removable side wall to hold the same in position, said latch being operable from the front of'the guide when the sash is raised.
3. In a sash guide, a fixed strip having an aperture therein, a detachable strip having anaperture therein in register with the aperture in the fixed strip, a member extending through-said apertures to prevent movement of the detachable strip, and means for-retracting said member. 7

In a sash guide, a fixedstrip having an aperture therein, a detachable strip having an aperturetherein in registerwith the aperture in the fixed strip, a member extending through said apertures to ,prevent :movement of the detachable strip,:a11d means operable from within thespace normally occupied by the sash for :retractingsaid member.
.5. In a sashyguide, a fixed strip, a removable sas'h-retaining :strip, and a movable latching member: engageable with said-sashretaining strip to hold the same in position.

8. In a sash guide, a removable sash-retaining strip, a latching'deviceengageable with said strip to holdthe same in position, and means for preventing inadvertent movement of the latching device.
9. In a sash guide, a sheet metal strip adapted to be fixedly attached to the jamb of a window in whichthe sash is'to'be-mounted, another sheet 'metal strip adapted to be detachably secured to the fixed strip in such a way as to form therewith two spaced side walls of a'groove for receiving the sash, and readily releasable means'for holding the detachable strip against displacement with respect'to the fixed strip comprising a locking member carried by one of the strips and projecting into a recess in the other strip, and means to yieldingly resist retraction of the member from the recess.
10. In a sash guide, a sheet metal strip adapted to be fixedly attached to the jamb of a window in which the sash is to be mounted, another sheet metal strip adapted to be detachably secured to the fixed strip in such a way as to form therewith two spaced side walls of a groove for receiving the sash, means for interlocking the detachable strip with the fixed strip, and readily releasable means for holding the detachable strip in interlocked position with respect to the fixed strip scribed my name.
