Be it known that I, HENRY T. PAIsTn, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a Fuse Plug, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fuse plugs of the type which includes a body having mounted within it a renewable fuse-carrying capsule and one object thereof is to simplify and cheapen the construction and assembly of such body, at the same time making it substantial and durable in form.
It is further desired to provide a fuse plug body having a novel arrangement of passages for permitting the escape of heated air or other gases formed upon the rupture of its fusible element by excessive current flow therethrough.
These objects and other advantageous ends I attain as hereinafter set forth, reference4 being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,

In the above drawings, l represents the main part of a fuse plug body which is approximately in the form of a hollow cylinder having an outwardly extending flange 2 at one end and usually madel of porcelain or equivalent structurally strong insulating material.V This body is also provided adjacent one end with an inwardly extending fiange 3 against which a transparent sheet 4 of mica or equivalent material is held by a retaining ring 5, within the hollow of the body which is preferably hexagonal in cross section. yj,
Mounted on the substantially cylindrical outer surface of the outer portion of the body and extending over the edges of its open end is an Edison terminal shell 6 usually of thin sheet metal, having substantially triangular springtongue portions 7 projecting inwardly within ythe hollow of said body. There is preferably, though not necessarily, one of these spring tongues immediately adjacent each of the flat sides of the hexagonal cavity of the body and their pointed ends project to a greater or less extent toward each other away from said sides.
For maintaining the shell 6 in place upon the body I provide a number of grooves `or recesses 8 extending parallel with its longitudinal axis or center line through the flange 2 in the portion l of said body to points in the present instance about half way between said flange and the open end of said portion. The inner end of each of these grooves or depressions constitutes a shoulder against which the adjacent portion 6a of the upper edge of the shell 6 is bent or upset so as to extend into said groove.
The renewable element or capsule used in connection with the body consists of a tubular body 10 having at its closed end an externally projecting ange 1l adjacent which it is of hexagonal prismatic form, designed to more or less loosely fit into the hollowof the portion l of the body. A
fusible element 13 extends from a central terminal l2 on the closed end of the body, through the hollow thereof, through a notch in the edge of its open end and down over the outside surfaces of said body to the ange llgwhen itis turned outwardly substantially at right angles. When the capsule is inserted in the body l of the plug the fusible element electrically engages one of the spring tongues 7 and is also clamped between the flange ll and the end portion of the shell 6, so that a circuit is established between said shell and the central terminal l2.
By my invention the shell may be easily and quickly fixed on the body of the plug by pressing inwardly the portions 6":L of its edge so that it is permanently and rigidly held from removal.
As shown in Figs. l, 4 and 5, I also preferably provide channels 14 in the outside surface of the body l parallel with and be- -tween the grooves 8 and running from the flange 2 to the open end of said body where they are extended inwardly so as to open into the capsule-receiving cavity. Any heated gases resulting from the fusing of the element 13 are thus free to escape from the with a plurality of ohannelsextending from its Yopposite end in its outside surface to said flange, said channels being extended 10 inwardly in said second end of the body to communicate with the hollow interior thereof; a threaded terminal shell mountedon the body eXtended over said channeled end` thereof4 and into the oavity'of the body; with a removable capsule loosely tting into the Second end of the body and having a central Contact anda relatively fusible element making electrical connection with the shell and with said Contact.V
