APPLICATION FILED JuLY2o,192x,
Patented Nov. 21, 1922.
UNITED STATES snas'rorrnn M. DALY,
GF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
FUSE.
Application sled July 2),
To allen/1011i it in ne! concern.'
Be it known that l, Cinnsrorrrnn M. DALY a citizen ot the "United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State ot tonnecticut, have invented certa-in new sind useful li'nprovenients in Fuses, which the following is e. specification.
This invention relates to fuses especially adapted for use in light sockets.
An important object of this invention is to provide e fuse which muy be detachably arranged in a light socket between the centrai Contact' ot' the socket and the center contact of the light bulb so that should the light brezil: and become short circuited all the lights on that circuit 'will not go out.
A. fuse constructed in accordance with this invention will eliminate the formation 0i objectionable dashes or arcs which radiate from a light soclret when the bulb attached to the socket/is short circuited for any rea- SOD.; v h
A. further object ot the invention is to pro vide e fuse of.' the class described which may be readily and conveniently attached to a kbulb and which extremely chesp to manufacture.
Other objects and sdventages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following' description.
In the accompanying drawing 'forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, v
Figure 1 is side elevation of a light socket equipos with the improved fuse, the socket being; psrtly shown in section.
Figure 2 is 'vertical sectional View through the Figure 3 is YYYien oi fuse opened to illustrate the member and the contacts connected to the ends of the In the wherein 'for the purpose of illustration shown a preferred embodif ment'of the invention the numeral 5 designates a socket of the usual construction, which socket electrical connection Witl an electric line designated by the numer l 6. The Wire G may be one brunch of al circuit having a number of other sockets to which lights are connected. The bulb 7 which is tnreeded into the socket/is provided 'With the usuel center Contact which ordinarily engages the center Contact 8 of the socket whereby the current is transmit- 1921. Serial No. 486,068.
ted from the socket to the filaments of the lamp. i
ot this application resides inV a. fuse gener.- elly designated by the numeral 10 and which as illustrated in lligure l is adapted to be 'detachably arranged between the inner wall of the socket and the. forward end of the light bulb, The body of the fuse consists of ay pair of preferably integral disks 11 of mica. or other suitable material :ind which are joined es indicated at l2. The center of each disk is provided with a metallic con tact 13 having its outer side formed with en enlarged head adapted to be engaged either with the center Contact 8 of the socket or witl the center Contact of the attaching porm tion oi the bulb. Since there are two contacts 13 one Contact is engaged with the contact 8 and the other is engaged with the center con# tact of the ligrht bulb. wherebyY the current supplied to the lmnp is passed-.through a fuse Wire 1l having its ends secured to. the contacts 13.
As illustrated particularly in Figure 3 the interiiiedinte portion of the fuse Wire 14: is coiled as indicated at 15 and is received Within an arcuate coi'npartment 16 at the outer edge portions ol the disks 11. The arcuate compartment 16 is formed by pressing; the disks 1l. outwardly at their adjacent portions. In assemblingl the fuse a suitable powder may be arranged in the arcuate compartment so as to prevent the radiation of en are or flash from the fuse when the same blows. An insulating disk 18 is provided with an attaching' tongue 19 izni'iedded in one edge of one of the disks 1l, the said insulfit ing disk 18 being adapted to be arranged between the disks 11 when the fuse is assembled. lt will be seen. that the insulating disk 18 prevents ei'igrafzement ot the contacts 13 with each other.
ln use the fuse may be detachably arranged Within the socket and when the bulb becomes short cironited for any reason the fuse 4Will blow thereby preventing the radiation of arcs or flashes. The fuse is ex-. tremely cheap to manufacture and will prevent an entire circuit from being placed out of eircnited.
I claimr- 1,. A fuse comprisingl a pair of integral disks, contacts carried by the disks and having heads on the outersdes of The invention forming the subject matter commission Whenone'ol the lights is short ilo.
