H. c. GOWRAN CABINET Filed Dec. 27. 1921 Patented July 15, 1924.
UNITED STATES 1,501,658 PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY C. GOWRAN, OLE TWO RIVERS, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE HAMILTON MANU- FACTURING COMPANY. CON SIN.
F TWO RIVERS, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WIS- CABINET.
Application filed December 27, 1921. Serial No. 525,133.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY C. GOWRAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Two Rivers, in the county of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cabinets, of which the following is a full,
clear, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to cabinets with their drawers and has a number of objects and advantages in view.
One feature of my invention resides in forming a cabinet drawer with a sheet metal bottom, two sheet metal side walls, a. sheet metal rear end wall and a front end wall preferably made of Wood that is in front of the front edges of the bottom and side walls whereby it will appear that the drawer is a wooden drawer although the body of the drawer will have the advantages of an all metal construction. In order that the front wall may be disposed as described, it is formed with a rear projection that is positioned between the side walls and overlies the bottom wall whereby this front wall may be suitably assembled with the balance of the drawer while at the same time covering the front edges of the metal portion of the drawer as described.
Another feature of the invention resides in providing the drawer with runners upon its bottom that are supported upon runways that have upright wall portions at their inner edges, these upright wall portions preferably serving as guard rails that are disposed between the runners. The runners engage the guard rails to limit the lateral movement of the drawer whereby the drawer may be made narrower than the drawer space to have ample freedom of movement.
In accordance with another feature of the invention the side walls of the drawer, being preferably made of sheet metal, are continued below the bottom of the drawer to form runners. These side walls are preferably returned under the bottom of the drawer to make the runners wider than the thickness of the side drawer walls.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in which Fig. I is a perspective view of a cabinet equipped with the drawer of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken from the front to the rear of the cabinet and with the drawer closed; Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken at one side of the cabinet; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 2.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The cabinet casing 1 may be of any suitable shape and is illustrated as havin a high space for the reception of a pluraIity of drawers which may be individually opened and closed, even though they are not separated by parting rails. It is understood, however, that the invention is not to be limited to the number of drawers employed. A pair of runways 2, 3 are provided for each drawer 4 upon opposite sides of the cabinet and within the drawer space, there being but one of the drawers shown. Each runway is preferably formed of sheet metal having an intermediate section 5 that is secured to the adjacent side of the cabinet, an inwardly extending strengthening ledge 6 at the top and the runway proper 7 at the bottom. Upright wall portions 8 are provided at the inner edges of the runways further to strengthen them and also to serve as guard rails, as will hereinafter appear.
The drawer 4 preferably has its bottom 9, its side walls 10 and its rear wall 11 formed of sheet metal. The side walls are preferably outwardly and downwardly extended as indicated most clearly at 12 in Fig. .4 whereby these walls are well strengthened. Said side walls are also continued below the bottom of the drawer and are returned to terminate at and to engage with the bottom of the drawer. In this we the runners 13 are produced and made muc wider than the thickness of the drawer sides. The inner and upper edges of the runners are desirably margined by ledges 14 that constitute integral continuations of the runners an'd which have fiat engagement with the drawer bottom. These ledges also serve further to strengthen the side walls.- The effective drawer space is that which occurs between the inner edges of the ledges 6 and in order that the drawer may not bind in this space it is made narrower than the space and is prevented from contacting with the ledges 6 by the guard rails 8 operating in conjunction with the runners 13 between which said guard rails are disposed closely adjacent the runners respectively individual thereto. The bottoms of the runners ride upon the tops of the runways whereby lateral runway grooves in the drawers are obviated.
The front wall of the drawer is preferably of thick material such as wood or other substance that simulates wood and in order that such material may be employed the construction illustrated most clearly in Fig. 2 is used. This front wall portion has its front side completely covering and concealing the front edges of the bottom and the side walls of the drawer so that when the drawer is closed the fact that it is made partly of wood and partly of metal is concealed. In order that these front edges of the bottom and side walls of the drawer may thus be covered the front wall has its front portion extended laterally of the side walls, the front wall also being formed with a rear Pl0180tl01l 15 that is interposed be tween the side walls and overlies the bottom wall. Screws 16 are passed through the side walls and into the rear projection 15 of the front wall whereby the front wall is suitably assembled with the balance of the drawer structure. Any desired form of knobs 17 may be suitably assembled with the front wall of the drawer.
While I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention 1 do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but having thus described my invention 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent the following A cabinet having a drawer space; a drawer in said space provided with runners upon its bottom; and runways upon the cabinet that support said runners and the drawer having them, these runways having each an intermediate section for attachment to the cabinet, an inwardly extending top ledge, an inwardly extending runway portion at the bottom, and upright wall portions at the inner edges of the runways and with which the runners are engageable to limit the lateral movement of the drawer, the bottoms of the runners riding upon the tops of the runways.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 18th day of November,
HARRY C. GOWRAN.
