Description

E. S. BOLTON.
Wash-Stands and'k Sinks.
Patented April 28,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT @Errea` EDVAHD S. OOLTON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVMNT IN WASH-STANDS AND SINKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,138, dated April 28, 1874; application tiled August 22, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
y Be it known that I, EDWARD S. CoLToN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, h ave invented certain Improvements in Vash-Stands or Sinks, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l of the accompanying drawings is a perspective view, Fig-2 is a central vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a vert-ical transverse section, taken in the line .fr y, of my improved sink or wash-stand.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in so-called dry-sinks or wash-stands; and has for its principal objects the providing of an economical, neat, compact, and convenient portable sink or washstand, that may be loca-ted in any desired position and supplied with hot and cold water without the heavy expense of heating and plumbing required in ordinary permanent hot and cold water sinks, and that may be used to advantage without the disadvantages occasioned by the freezing and leakage of the pipes of ordinary hot and cold water sinks in places where it is not convenient for the ordinary hot and cold water sink to be arranged 5 also, to obviate the use of several portable vessels required in an ordinary portable sink or washstand, and to save the time and labor required in frequently lling and emptying the same, and to save the expense incurred, particularly in hotels and other large establishments, by the breakage of the said vessels. My improvements consist, mainly, in a portable sink or wash-stand, arranged, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, with a cold-water tank and a hot-water tank or boiler, provided with suitable outlet-pipes and faucets, the boiler being heated by one or more gas-jets, or by a kerosene or other lamp or heater introduced below the boiler in an apartment provided with a perforated shelf to hold the lamp or heater and allow a circulation of air admitted and circulatin g through perforations formed in the floor and in the door of said apartment. These improvements also consist of an adjustable sla-b or cover having a recess for soap and a set wash-bowl which empties into a waste-water tank or sink beneath it, and from which tank the water is drawn through a pipe supplied with a suitable faucet located in an adjoining lower apartment, into which a pail or other receptacle is introduced when desired to collect the waste water from the waste-tank, beneath which is arranged an apartmentfor the reception of a chamber-vessel, dsc., all of which I will `now proceed to more particularly describe.
reception of a chamber-vessel, &c. Fitting over the top of the sink or tank B is an adjustable cover or slab, C, formed with a recess, a, to contain soap, and provided with a set washbowl, D, having an orifice, l), in its bottom furnished with a proper cha-in and Aplug or other stopper. At the side or rear, and extending above the top ofthe sink B, is an exterior' case, E, formed within its upper portion at the rear or on one side, with a tank, F, lined with zine, lead, or other material, or otherwise prepared, to contain cold water. In front, or at the side of the tank F, and separated from it by an airspace, c, is a tank or. boiler, G, made of copper or other metal. rlhese tanks F and G extend downward to the top ofthe wash-stand, or may be made of any desired depth, and are provided with eduetion-pipes d and e, furnished with swing-lever or other suitable faucets j' and g, through which water is introduced into the bowl D. The boiler-partition t' extends downward below the bottom of the cold-water tank F, and has projecting forward of it a shelf, H, having perforations lo through it for the circulation of air, which is admitted through perforations l and m formed in the door N and in the floor of an apartment, I, arranged beneath the tanks F Gr. Entering the apartment I from the side of the lower portion of the tank or sink B, is a waste-water pipe, L, provided with a suitable faucet, a. The case E is provided with an adjustable cover, K, that is readily removed for the introduction of water into the tanks G and F, and is provided at each corner with cleats p, or otherwise arranged to be held in place or the cover K may behinged to the case E, if preferred. The cover or slab O is also provided with cleats q to hold it in position, or it may be otherwise arranged to be held in place when adjusted, and to be readily removed to allow access to the sink or tank B; or it may be arranged to be hinged and raised and lowered. The sink or wastewater tank B is lined with zinc, lead, or other material, or may be otherwise prepared to prevent leakage. rlhe stand is provided with a towel-rack or rod, M, and may be arranged with drawers on one side of the apartments J or I; or the compartments of the stand maybe otherwise arranged, as desired.
The tanks F and Gr being lilled with water, a suilicient supply is secured to last several days without refilling, thereby saving the inconvenience occasioned heretofore by the frequent filling of the pitcher of an ordinary washstand. Moreover, by merely turning a faucet, the water in myin'iproved wash-stand or sink, is conveyed to the bowl without the trouble of lifting and emptying a pitcher, and when used the water is delivered .into the sink or waste' water tank below by sim ply removing the stop per of the bowl, instead of lifting and emptying the bowl, as is required in ordinary washstands. Besides, instead `of having to frequent] y empty the slop jar or vessel of an ordinary wash-stand, the waste water in my invention is only occasionally removed from the wastetank, which is comparatively of large capacity, and is emptied, through the pipe L and faucet a, into a pail or other vessel introduced into the apartment I when it is desired to withdraw the waste-water from the tank B.
The boiler Gr is heated, when desired, to furnish hot water by a jet or jets, or by kerosene or other lamp or lamps, or by any desired heater situated below it, and a circulation of air is admitted through the perforations k Z on to supply the requisite draft and allow the exit of smoke, &c. Hot water is thus supplied when required without the expense and inconvenience necessitated by the sustaining of a large regular fire, when not required for other use, merely for the purpose of heating the water, as is the case with ordinary hot and cold water sinks.
By removing or lifting' the cover (l ready access may be had to the sink or tank B for the purpose of cleaning it.
If desired, the cover or slab C may be dispensed with, and the waste-water tank may be used as a sink for kitchen or other use, and the waste water or slops, passing through a waste-pipe, may be collected in a proper receptacle and removed to some suitable place of deposit, thereby saving the expense of drainage.
By the above description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, the conveniences and advantages of my improvements will readily be apparent without further eX- planation.
Having thus fully described my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A cold-water tank, F, and a hot-water tank or boiler, G, separated by the air-space c, and provided with pipes d c and faucets j' g, in combination with a wash-stand or sink, substantially as specified.
2. A wash-stand or sink having a removable cover or slab, C, formed or provided with a set wash-bowl, D, in combination with the wastewater tank B, cold-water tank F, and hot-water tank or boiler Gr, substantially as herein set forth.
3. A wash-stand or sink having cold and hot water tanks F G, and a place, H, for a lamp or heating apparatus below the lowest part of said tank G, substantially as shown.
In a wash-stand or sink, as herein described, the combination of the apartments I J, tanks B F G, and removable cover or slab C, all arranged substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
