CORSET.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELIZABETH VAN Down, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.

It is the object of this invention to provide a corset which forms an abdominal support and which is also so arranged as to readily fold transversely across the abdomen in order to form a more comfortable garment than has heretofore been constructed.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a garment which While readily folding transversely in order that the wearer may assume a sitting position is also so arranged as to afford the desired longitudinal support and compression for the body.

It is a still further object of the invention to provide a corset in which the fastening means are arranged at the sides of the same so that there will be no bulky portion of the garment at the front of the latter. 7

The invention also contemplates the provision of a perforated section in the same in order to obtain desired ventilation through the garment. I

The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a corset. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.

Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 3-3- of Fig. 1.

The corset consists of back sections 1 and j 2 and a front sectionB. The back sections are connected at the center of the back by a perforated strip 4 and the back sections extend around the body so as to meet the front section at the sides of the front of usual hose supporters 6 which are, preferably, arranged at the sides of the front sectionof the corset and at points upon the back sections where they will extend downwardly over the sides of the hips.

Elastic inserts are, preferably, arranged in the lower edges of the back sections 1 and 2 at points extending over the rear portions of the hips. These elastic inserts are arranged in cut-out portions 8 at the lower edges of the back sections. The cut-outs are, preferably, provided with depending tabs 9 from the back sectionswhich are so arranged as to form the cut-outs into spaces which taper to reduced width up wardly from the lower edge' of the garmen't; Elastic strips of material 10 are secured over the respective cut-out portions of the corset, the material of the corset including the tabs 9 being left somewhat full where" it is secured to the strips 10.

By this arrangement it will be seen that the elastic material will tend to draw'the corset snugly over the hips, the tapering arrangement of the cut-out spaces providing for the contraction of the lower edge of the corset so as to readily conform to the curvature of the hips.

The lower edge of the front section of the corset is provided with a cut-out portion 12 in which are arranged tabs'13 depending from the main portion of the front section. These tabs taper downwardly and, preferably, terminate short of the lower edge of the front section 3. By the tapering arrangement of the tabs spaces 14 are provided between the same which are of decreasing width upwardly from the lower edge of the garment. An elastic strip 15 extends across the cut-out space thus pro vided at the lower edge of front section 3,'-

said strip being secured to the front section and to the tabs13 with the material of the front sect-ion somewhat full with re lation to the elastic strip. An elastic portion is thus provided in the corset which 'is arranged to fit snugly beneath theabdomen so as to support the same, the tapering arrangement of the spaces 14: of the cut-out portion of the corset providing means whereby the lower edge of the front section 3 may contract transversely to curve snugly beneath the abdomen.

The usualboning 17 may be arranged in the back sections 1 and 2, said boning extending longitudinally of the corset. Similar longitudinally extending boning 18 may be provided at the respective sides of the front section 3 above the elastic strip 15 and longitudinally extending boning 19, preferably, extends downwardly from the upper edge of the corset between the boning 18 at the sides of front section 3. The boning 19 terminates an appreciable distance above the elastic strip 15, preferably, at a line approximately at the waist line. r

Between the boning 19 and the elastic strip 15, boning 20 extending transversely of the garment is arranged between the boning 18 and the sides of front section 3. This boning extends from the waist line downwardly over the curvature ofthe abdomen and will thus form means for compressing the abdomen and defining the waist line of the wearer. By the transverse arrangement of this boning it will be seen that this por tion of the corset is free to fold transversely and to be compressed longitudinally. The wearer of the corset may thus bend with great freedom and may assume a sitting position without discomfort.

Itwill be noted that the hose supporters 6 which extend downwardly from the front portion of the corset project from portions of the lower edge of said front section which extend diagonally across the limbs of the.

As a. consequence these supporters will extend diagonally across the wearer"slimbs as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1 and the hose supporters will not engage the wearers knee caps -but will be positioned at one side of the parting from the versely disposed opening and there being inverted V-shaped openings extendlng up- -wardly into said front portion from. said transversely disposed opening, asection of elastic material positioned in said transversely disposed opening and the inverted V-shaped extensions thereof, and a series of horizontally disposed reinforcing members arranged parallel with each other in the front'section of the corset immediately above said section of elastic material.

A corset comprising a pair of back sections and a front section, the lower portion of the latter being cut away to form a transversely disposed opening and there being inverted V-shaped' openings extending upwardly into said front portion from said transversely disposed opening, a section of elastic material positioned in said trans versely disposed opening and the inverted V-shaped extensions thereof, a series of horizontally disposed reinforcing members arranged parallel with each other in the front section of the corset immediately above said section of elastic material, and a series of vertically disposed reinforcing members seated in the upper portion of the front section of the corset immediately above the horizontally disposed reinforcing members.

In a corset, the combination with a pair of back sections, of a front section, the side edges of which are detachably connected to the front edges of the back sec-- tions, the lower portion of said front section being cut away to form a transverse opening and a series of inverted substantially V-shaped openings, a. strip ofelastic material secured to said front section and arranged within said transverse opening and said inverted V-shaped openings, and a series of horizontally disposed reinforcing members arranged in said front section above said elastic strip.
