IMPROVEMENT IN MOP-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,999, dated April 21, 1874; application filed September 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. CURTIS, of Buchanan, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Mop-Heads, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of this invention relates to an improvement in the construction of that class of metallic mop-heads wherein the' mop is clamped between two jaws formed at the ends of two crossed levers, and to an improved means of securing the head to the mop-handle. The invention consists in the peculiar means employed to secure it to the handle.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section at m 00 in Fig. 1.
1n the drawing, A A represent two jaws or clamps, the former east with a single curved shank, a, and the latterrwith a double or forked and curved shank, a the two shanks being crossed and pivoted together at b. The jaw A is provided with projecting teeth 0 on its edge, which may enter round holes 0 in the angle of the jaw A, which is L-shaped in cross section, to firmly grasp the fabric from which the mop is made. The shank a is cast'with a semi-cylindrical or half socket, a which embraces the end of the handle B. It is also provided with an internal dowel-pin, d, Fig. 2,
which is inserted in a hole in the side of the handle. The socket is made tapering on its outside, the outer end being the thickest, and over it is slipped a plate-ring, G, which compresses it upon the handle firmly as the ring is driven on the tapering part. The plate of the ring forms the remainder of the socket, and is provided with a laterally-projecting screw, 0, on which is threaded a \ving'nut, f, the end of the screw being upset to prevent the subsequent removal of said nut. The shank a is forked at its inner end to come nn' der the nut. By screwing down the latter, the jaws will clamp anything introduced between them. After the plate-ring is in place, a small wood-screw, g, is screwed through a hole in its base into the handle, to prevent it from slipping back.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y The jaw A, having the taperedhalf-soeket a3, with the dowelpin d, in combination with the plate-ring O and handle B, constructed substantially as described, for the purpose of fastening the mop-head to the handle.
