STUMP BURNER.
Application filed April 9, 1923. Serial No. 631,041.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, OTTO KoHsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chehalis, in the county of Lewis and State of VVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stump Burners, of which the following is a specification.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide ahighly improved burner, that is primarily although not spe cifically adapted for the burning of tree stumps, the invention being so characterized as to embrace the desired features of simplicity, durability and efficiency, the same comprising relatively few parts, and these being correlated in such a manner as to reduce the liability of derangement to a minimum.
A further purpose of my invention is the provision of a stump burner that maybe readily transported from place to place in a simple and expeditious manner, and thereby permit the burning of stumps upon great land acreage.
The nature and advantagesof the invention will be better understood when'thefollowing detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the lnvention residing in the construction,
combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the oil tank, together with its directly associated parts.
Figure 3 is an elevation, partly in cross section of a form of burner nozzle, employed in conjunction with this invention, and
Figure 4 is a similar view of an air nozzle, also forming a part of my invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 indicates a truck frame 6, the front supporting and stearing wheels therefor, and 7 the rear supporting wheels. However, I do not wish to limit myself to any particular form of supporting truck, as in the future practice of the invention, the same will be modified from time to time without affecting the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Upon the rear end of the truck frame 5, is a tank 8 of relatively large capacity, the same being secured to the frame, through the medium of rods 9 that will extend through the body of the said tank 8. The upper end of this tank is provided with a filler opening that is normally closed by a cap 10, the upper end of the'tank being also equipped with an air inlet nipple 11.
Slightly forward ofthe tank 8 and Se cured upon the truck frame in any manner desirable, is 'an' air compressor designated generally by the numeral 12, this air compressorincluding the usual pulley wheel 13, over which is trained a belt 14. This belt extends forwardly of the truck frame, and
is in turn trained over a pulley 15, upon one end of thepowershaft of a combustion engine16. I
Communicating at one end with the usual outlet of the compressor 12 is an air feeder pipe 17, the same extending upwardly and thence rearwardly andbeing connected at its opposite end to'a coupling-18 upon the said outlet nipple" of the tank 8, this pipe being provided witha check valve 19.
Secured to the coupling 18'are oppositely extending pipes 20 and 21, the pipe 20 being equipped with a pressure gauge 22, while the pipe 21 isequipped with a. safety blow off valve. Also secured to the coupling 18, and extending forwardly thereof is a pipe section 24-, upon the front end of which is a similar coupling 25, and secured thereto, and extending in opposite directions therefrom are pipe sections 26, which are provided with pet cocks 27, the front end of said coupling'25 being also equipped with a similar pet cock, there being secured to each of these pet cocks a flexible hose 28.
Upo-n the front side of the tank '8, and adjacent the lower end thereof is an outlet pipe 29, upon the projecting end of which is a coupling 30 that carries oppositely extending pipe sections 31, upon the end of which are globe valves 32, to which are secured hose lengths 33, it being of course understood that the coupling 30 may be changed for permitting of a greater or lesser number of valves 32 to be secured thereto.
Upon the free ends of the air hose elements 28 are nozzles M, the same being of a relatively elongated nature, and of any de sirable construction compatible with the purposes of my invention.
In Figure 3, there is shown a specific form of oil burner, that comprises an elongated pipe section 34, one end thereof being internally screw threaded for the reception of the burner tip 35, this plug being provided with the oil passage having its inner end shaped to provide a valve seat 36. Adjacent the end of the said pipe 34: carrying the burner tip 35 is a sleeve or collar 38 of a head re: taining metal, and being welded or otherwise secured to said pipe section. Upon the up per end of the pipe section 34 is the usual head 39, to which is attached the free end of oneof the hose sections 33, it of course being understood that each hose 33 carries aburner of the type shown in Figure 3. Movable within the pipe section 34 is a valve rod 40, one end of the same being formed so as to engage the said valve seat 36 of the burner tip 35, for cutting off the flow of oil in the manner to be presently described.
Adjacent the upper end of the said Valve rod 40, the same is formed with an enlarged screw threaded portion 41, that has engagement within a screw threaded opening of the said head 39, the upper end of this rod projecting outwardly of the head and being provided with an operating wheel 42. In employing my device'in the burning of tree stumps, it is first necessary that a hole be dug in the ground in a direction towards the heartof a stump, and preferably between the two main extending roots. Before opening the respective valve from the oil tank 8 to the burner being used, the sleeve or collar 38 is heated to practically a red heat, after which, the valve is opened, and the valve rod -10 of the burner adjusted to the desired position. .The burner is then inserted within the hole, together with one of the air nozzles 33, it being of course understood that the compressor 12 is being operated,
and that the respective pet cock 27 is open. The air nozzle 33 is also extended into the opening within said burner, and the Oll passing through the tube 34 will be vaporized,
whereby the same will be mixed with the air from the nozzle for producing a highly ignitible fluid. After the stump has been burning for a certain length of time,-the oil burnei may beremoved from the hole, the air from the nozzle 33 assisting in the burning of the stump.
Although I have shown and described device as beingprimarily adapted for the burning of tree stumps, it is nevertheless to be understood that the tank 8 may carry a supply of disinfectant material, which will be discharged through the oil and air nozzles for spraying trees, plants or the like, it being also obvious that the device may be used for kindredpurposes.
I do not wish to limit myself to the specific construction of the device as set forth, as minor changes may be made therein, without departing from the spirit and scopeof the invention as claimed. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to. secure by Letters-Patent, is: V
A portable stump burner including a wheeled frame, an oil tank mounted on the rear end portion of said frame, securing means extending through said tank and the frame for securing said tank thereto, and an air compressor mounted on said frame, means for driving said air compressor, a fitting mounted on the upper end of said tank and having communication therewith,
a pipe connecting said fittingto said air compressor for conveying the air compressed to the tank, said fitting having .a
with said outlet having a valve for control- 7 ling the outlet of fluid from thetank, and burner nozzles mounted on the end of said last mentioned hose whereby the air compressed in said compressorwill be conveyed to the tank and air hose and maintained undera predetermined pressure for forcing oil through the last mentioned'hose when the valve controlling communication thereto is opened and forcing air thru the first'meir tioned hose when the valve controlling-the outlet thereto is open, the burner nozzles providing a fuel oil flame for burning the stump and the first mentioned hose connection providing the air for said flame.
