Specification of Letters Patent.

To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YVILLLAM FRANKLIN PAYNE, a subject of the ring of Great Britain, a resident of the city of Stratford, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
lhis invention relates to improvements in oil burners, and the objects of the invention are to facilitate atomizing the oil and mixing therewith the desired quantity of air, or a mixture of air and steam and delivering the atomized fuel to a furnace, to properly control the flow of air, oil and steam, so that any predetermined mixture can be obtained, whereby the efficiency of the burner will have increased, to simplify the construction of the burner and render it capable of being utilized on heating systems at present in use, and to render the several parts of the burner readily accessible for inspection or repair.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists essentially of the improved construction particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.

Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings; A represents a boiler of any usual description and B the improved oil burner mounted thereon. The boiler A is arranged in a setting C includ ing the furnace 10, into which the discharge nozzle of the burner :8 extends, but as the setting may be of any usual description well known in the art, it is not deemed necessary to describe the same.
The burner 13 which forms the present invention comprises a mixing chamber 11 having a bore 12 extending longitudinally therethrough, and communicating with this bore are two angularly disposed conduits 13 which extend from the side of the heating chamber into the center thereof.
The ends of the bore 12 are enlarged and threaded and one end makes threaded engagement with the air inlet pipe 1a which is provided with a manually operable valve 15, connected through the pipe 16 with a source of air under pressure, such as for instance a blower of any other form of like machine.
The opposite end of the bore 12 of the pipe let makes threaded engagement with one end of the discharge nozzle 17, the other end of which is flattened as shown at 18 to provide a constructed opening 19 for an object which will be made clear hereafter.
The conduits 13 are threaded at the outer ends and connected to the pipes 20 which are connected by elbows 21 with nipples 22, which are in turn connected to manually operable control valve 28. The control valves 23 are connected to the nipples 24: formed in two portions and connected by couplings 25, and the upper portions of the nipples 2d are connected by elbows with nippics 26 which are in turn connected to a T-piece 27.
The Tpiece 27 is connected to a nipple 28, which is attached to a T-piece 29, which in turn is connected by a nipple 30 to a valve 31, and this valve is connected by a nipple 32 to a reduced coupling The reduced coupling 33 is connected by an oil pipe 34 to an oil supply tank 85, which is normally mounted at a level above the burner B, so that the oil will flow from the tank 35 under gravity to the burner.
The T-piece 29 is connected by the pipe 86 to a valve 37, which is connected through a pipe 28 to a source of steam supply, such as any suitable part of the boiler A, and the valve 37 may be opened to allow steam to intermix with the oil before the said oil is delivered into the mixing chamber 11.
When this device is in use, the oil tank is filled with oil, and air is delivered through the pipe 16 and the valve 15 to the mixing chamber 11, and the burner B may be primarily heated to assist in the atomizing of the oil. J
The oil valve 31 is now opened and the oil flows from the tank 35 through the pipe 3 1, .iipple 32, valve 31, nipple 30, nipple 28, T- piece 27, nipples 26, nipples 24, valves 23, nipples 22, elbows 26, nipples 24c valves 23, nipples 22, elbows 21 to the pipes 20, into the mixing chamber 11 where the oil will become vaporized and mix With the air, and so a combustible mixture is delivered to the nozzle 17 in the furnace 10.
hen the burner has been in operation for some time, and steam has been generated in the boiler A, then the valve 37 may be opened to allow the steam to intermix with the oil before reaching the mixing chamber 11.
'VVhen the burner has been started, the attendant will actuate the valve 15, 23 and 31 until the desired mixture of air and oil is obtained to give good combustible mixture, and when steam has been raised in the boiler the attendant will then actuate the valve 37 to permit of the desired amount of steam being delivered to the oil previous to mixing With the air.
After the several valves have been set, the burner will require very little attention;

A burner comprising a mixing chamber having a center conduit, a pair of diverging conduits extending from the center conduit through the lateral Walls of the mixing chamber, a discharge nozzle connected to one end of the center conduit and provided with a constricted flat opening, an air pipe connected to the other end of the center conduit, pipes connected to the diverging conduits and extending above the mixing chamber and connected together, valves in the said pipes, a pipe extending from the said pipes between the said valves, a valve on the last said pipe, a. pipe connected to the last said pipe intermediate of the first said pipe and the last said valve, and a valve on the Ears; said pipe, as and for the purpose speci- In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
