To all whom t 'may concern.:
Be it known that I, MARTIN L. VnnsiNc, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Dust Catchers and Spark Arresters; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the present invention is the provision of a device to be placed in the hot air pipes of pipeless and pipel furnaces to catch dust floating in the air and arrest dirt or other particles contained in the air whereby to supply pure hot air for heating and obviate taking dust into the lungs when breathing or having dust settle upon furnishings, draperies and walls.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
Vhile the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to withoutdeparting from the nature of the invention.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The device comprises a frame, a plurality of bars carried by the frame and disposed in spaced relation, and fluffy material carried by the bars and operating to remove dust from the air and sparks from smoke and products of combustion.
The frame in its specific formation is constructed of wire of suitable gage which is bent to provide opposed reversely inclined or helical elements 1 and tie elements 2 connecting the helical elements, said tie elements having an approximate parallel rela-4 Serial No. 672,219.
tion and disposed substantially perpendicular to the helical elements 1. The ends of the wire comprising the frame terminate in eyes which are interlooped, as indicated at 3. Diametrical bars 4 he ve a spiral or helical arrangement and are connected at their ends to the helical elements 1 at diametrically opposite points. The bars 4 cross upon an aXial line and are regularly spaced at their outer ends. In the preferable construction, each of the bars 4 is of channel formation, the opening being constricted at the outer side, whereby to retain the fluffy material 5 pressed into the space formed between the side walls of the bar. Ears at opposite ends .of the bars are bent about the helical elements 1, as indicated at 6, and the bars are maintained in predetermined spaced relation by means of sleeves 7 mounted upon the elements 1. The bars in cross Vsection are of wedge form and the material 5 is pressed into the space formed between the side walls or flanges and may consist of asbestos, mineral wool or the like which is fluited or frayed to catch dust in the air and arrest sparks contained in the smoke or products of combustion.
The device is designed to be located in the hot air pipes of hot air heaters, such as pipe and pipeless furnaces, and operates to remove dust and other particles from the air so that the latter is filtered and supplied for heating free from dust, dirt and any other objectionable particles.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character specified, comprising a plurality of channel bars disposed in spaced relation, and material confined in the space of the bars and having portions projecting and fluffed to catch dust in the air and arrest sparks contained in smoke and products of combustion.
