SPARK-ARRESTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 19, 1911. Serial No. 655,455.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. KOHLRUST, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spark-arresters for attachment to the smoke stacks of locomotives and other power plants, the object of the invent-ion being to provide a spark and cinder arrester which is simple of construction, economical of production, capable of being readily and conveniently applied for use and removed forrepairs or other purposes, and adapted to effectually prevent the passage of the sparks and cinders without obstructing the draft.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through a smoke stack showing one form and mode of application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the arrester. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical section thereof.
The arrester comprises a series of superposed ring-shaped plates or disks 1, arranged in superposed and co-axial relation, and having their openings 2 of proper size for the free passage of the smoke and products of combustion. These ring-shaped plates or disks correspond in diameter to the internal diameter of the stack 3, and are adapted to frictionally engage the surface of the stack, whereby they are held therein from displacement andat proper intervals to permit the smoke to discharge without obstructing the draft. Arranged for cooperation with the Plates 1 are imperforate disks or plates 4, arranged between and c0- axially with said plates 1, and serving as battles to prevent the direct passage of the exhaust through said openings. Said disks 4 may be of the same diameter as the openings 2, in which event they may be formed from the metal cut out to produce the openings 2, whereby the exhaust passing through said openings 2 is spread laterally and caused to take a circuitous path through the arrester. As a result, the sparks, cinders and other solid particles passing out with the smoke are caused to strike the battle plates and rings and to be arrested so that they will not pass out with the exhaust. The sparks and cinders are thus retained and fall back in the chimney, thus preventing liability of conflagrations from their discharge with the exhaust.
The sets of disks or plates are preferably formed of sheet metal and are connected and held in spaced relation by suitable connecting means. As shown, the connecting means comprises an annular series of wire stays 5, which stays are looped at intervals, as shown at 6, around the edge and through openings 7 in the disks, whereby the series of disks are positively connected and held in preperly spaced relation.
From the foregoing (lGSCIlPLIOIl, the con struction of my improved spark and cinder arrcster will be readily understood, and it will be seen that it provides a device of this kind which is simple of construction, inexpensive of production, capable of being easily applied and removed, and etlicient for its intended purpose.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, is
The combination with a smoke stack, of a. spark arrester therein comprising a series of superposed apertured and imperforate coaxial plates alternating in arrangement with each other, said plates being provided with openings therein, and connecting spacing members between the plates, said members being looped around the edges of said plates and through the openings therein.
