Application led March 26, 192i. Serial No. 455,833.
lie it known that I, JULIAN B. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hallsville, in the county of Boone and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Veeders, of wiich the following is a specilication.
Myinvention relates to new and useful improvements in weeders and more particularly to what is known as a buck bush and hazel puller, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will positively remove buck bushes and hazels by the roots.
further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efiicient in use or operation.
lilith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangementof parts as will be hereinafter referred to.
In the accompanying drawingforming a part of this applica-tion:-
Figure l is a perspective view of the weeder, and
Fig. 2 is a. section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which l designates steel teeth bars which are clamped in somewhtt forwardly converging fashion to the metal crossbars or braces 2 and 3 respectively. The rear ends of these ba rs l are curved downwardly to form tines 4. As stated the bars l are clamped to the cross bars or braces 2 and 3 by individual lJ-shapcd clamping members 5, the latter being engaged at their free ends with nuts, and through this medium each bar is capable of individual adjustment and replace nient, in case of necessity.
These bars l, as stated, tend to converge forwardly and theforward ends of the same are bolted together by means of two cross bolts, designated in the drawing as 6, these bolts also securing therebetween a hooked member 7 to which the draft team is adapted to be hitched. i
Secured to the forward cross member 2 is the forward end of an elongated wood handle 8, the latter inclining upwardly and being also supported upon the rear bracing member The free end of the handle 8 is provided with an iron handhold 9 sutil ciently large to be engaged by both hands.
From the foregoing construction it -will be seen that I have provided an improved weeder which when drawn forwardly will be forced into the ground to remove buck bushes and hazels by their roots, thus positively removing the same from the turf.
I have found it particularly desirable to use four such teeth in this weeder, but, of course, I do not desire to limit myself to this number and as many may be provided are found desirable.
It will be seen that I have thus provided a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will positively carry out the purposes for which the same is designed.
"While I have particularly described `the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what- I claim is:
A, weeder comprising a plurality of forwardly converging beams having their rear ends formed into downwardly extending forwardly curving tines, a pair of cross braces arranged on said beams, means associated therewith for individually clamping said beams thereto, a draft hook removably secured between the converging ends of the intermediate pair of said beams, an elongated handle having its forward end secured to the cross brace adjacent the converging ends of said beams, said handle extending rearwardly from said tines and adapted to be supported vintermediate its ends on said other cross brace and held in spaced relation thereto.
In testimony whereof 'I aiiiX my signature.
` JULIAN B. CAMPBELL.
