Description

N. DREW.
POTATO DIGGER.
APPLIOATION I'ILBD JAH. 23. 19144 1,096,610, Patented May 12,1914.
NIHOL/\S UREW amuua,
UNITED a STATES PATENT OFFICE. a
NICHOLAS DREW, OF MORA, MINNESOTA. 4
POTATO-DIGGER.
To all 1071077?, it may concern Be it known that I, NICHOLAS DREW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mora, in the county of Kanabec and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Potato-Diggeraof which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in agricultural implements) and more particularly to a device known as a potato digger and the primary Object of the invention is to provide an improved de- Vice of this character which will be most efiicient in carrying out the purpose for which the same is designed.
A further Object of the invention resides in providing a digger composed of a gang of teeth, the same being formed on the Curved ends of a plurality of longitudinal shanks or bars carried on the device and a still further object resides in providing a plurality of teeth, certain of which are of greater length than others and the efiective or engaging ends of which are disposed in a plane arranged at an obtuse angle with respect to the longitudinal plane of travel of the device.
A still further Object of the invention resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efiicient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the aecompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a plan view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several Views and in which- 1 indicates a main bar, to the rear face of which is secured a strip or plate 2, one end of which is bent angularly and rearwardly to form an extensicn 3. Secured to the outer face of the strip 2, in overlappingtrelation to one another, are the angularly bent ends 4 of the rearwardly extending arms or Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 23, 1914.
Patented May 12, 1914. Serial No. 813,950.
bars 5 and the means which secured said angularly bent ends to the plate or strip 2, also secured the latter to the main bar 1. As many arms or bars 5 may be provided as are found desirable, the same being disposed parallel to one another and directed in a plane angular to the longitudinal plane of travel of the device. The rear ends of said arms are Curved downwardly and forwardly, as shown at 6 to provide substantially harrow teeth. The bars or arms 5 are increased in length toward one side of the device and the teeth formed at the lower ends of the curvatures of the arms at the side of the device having the shorter arms, are of greater length than the teeth formed on the remanng arms.
Carricd on the extension 3 and directed substantially parallel to the main bar 1, is a plate or strip 7 having a plurality of slots 8 therein through which are guided the arms or bars 5. This strip or plate forms a guiding and bracing means for the arms or bars in the application of the device to use.
Securcd to the main bar 1, are the ends of a pair of rods 9, the latter bein also secured to the plate or strip 7 to brace t e latter and continuing from these rods or bars are the upwardly and rearwardly extending handle members 10. Through these handle members the teeth may be forced into engager ment with the surface of the ground as the device is propelled thereover.
Projecting from the outer ends of the main bar 1, are the bars or strips 11 which converge toward one side of the device, forward of the main bar and have the draft securing means 12 adjustably attached thereto. Carried on one of these bars 11, is a depending' arm 13, to the lower end of which is swiveled a eolter l l, the purpose of the latter being obvious.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device, the manner of ap lying the same to use and the operation tiereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efiicient and useful in operation.
.While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth it is Obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the in- Vention.
Having thus described what I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a main bar a pluraiity of arms secured thereto and extending rearwardly thereof, the rear ends of said arms being Curved downwardly and forwardiy to provide teeth, means in connection with said bar to draw the same forwardly, said bar being disposed at an inclination to the line of travel thereof, bracing means for the aforesaid arms, and handie members in connection with said bar and bracing` means to force the teeth into the surface of the ground. V
2. A device of the class described comprising a main transverse bar means in connectio-n therewith to draw the same forwardly, said bar being' disposed at an inclination to the line of travei thereof, a plurality of spaced longitudinaliy extending arms having the forward ends thereof bent angniarly and secured in overlapping relation to one another on the rear face of said main bar, the rear ends of said arms being bent downwardiy and forwardly to form teeth, bracing means for said arms, and hanthis invention,
die members in connection with said bar and bracing means to force the teeth downwardly into engagement with the surface of the ground.
3. A device of the class described comprising a main bar, means in connection therewith to draw the same forwardly, said bar being; disposed at an inclination tothe line of travel thereof, a plurality of spaced a longitudinally extending arms having the.
forward ends thereof bent angularly and secnred in overlapping relationto one another on the rear face of said main bar, the real' ends of said arms being' bent downwardly and forwardly to provide teeth, a strip also secured to the rear face of said main bar by the means securing the forward ends of said arms thereto, the one end of said strip plate, the rear ends thereof being disposed V npwardiy and rearwardly and designed to form handles.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two wtnesses NICHOLAS DREW.
