STATES HOWARD '1. CHINN, F INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA.
DOLL.
Application filed ing is a specification.
' move certain This invention relates to toys and more particularly to dolls havin movable parts.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character constructed so that the depression of a button will operate to parts of the toy which are spring returne Another object is to provide a cheaply constructed toy of this character which will afford amusement for children and which is comparatively strong and not easily broken. I
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description 'proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawin s Figure 1 represents a front e evation of a doll constructed in accordance with this invention with the movable parts shown in raised position in dotted lines and in normal lowered position in full lines.
'Fi 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
a Fig. 3 is a similar view taken-in a plane at right angles to Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section line 44 of Fig. 2. i
The invention is herein shown in the form of a doll 1, although obviously it may be embodied in any other animal or object.
The body 2 of the doll which .is preferably constructed of wood, papier-mach or other suitable material is here shown with the taken on the head 3 made inte ral therewith and through which and said ody extends centrally, a longitudinal bore 4 merging at its lower en into a chamber 5 and at its upper end into a chamber 6 for a purpose described. A bore 7 exten s transversely through the body at the upper portion thereof ad acent the shoulders of the doll and in the outer ends of which are movably equipped with .operates to retain the ring resently to be April 12, 1923. Serial No. 631,708.
mounted arms 13 connected for operation in a manner presently to be described.
A transverse bore 8 leads from the chamber 5 and opens through the rear portion of the body having an upwardl extending enlargement 9 as shown clear y in'Fig. 2 in which enlargement the actuating push button 20 is designed to operate.
The lower end of the body 2 has'spaced leg receiving sockets 10 in which legs 11 are mounted to rotate and be held in adjusted position by friction. These legs 11 are equipped at their lower ends with fiat feet 12 designed to support the doll in upright position.
As shown,
Two passages 21 and 22 extend upwardly from the chamber 5 and diverge, mer mg at their upper ends into the transverse ore 7 near its outer ends and in which are mounted for longitudinal movement, rods 23 and 24 loosely connected at their upper ends with eyes 13 carried by the inner ends of the arms 13 while their lower ends have eyes 25 loosely connected with the inner end of the lever 17.
A coiled spring 27 is mounted on the uper end of the rod 16 in the chamber 6 and is connected at one end with a button 15 and bears at its other end against the lower end -wall of chamber 6 so that when the rod 16 is moved longitudinally downward, this spring will be com ressed and simultaneously the hair 14 wi 1 be lifted as shown 1n dotted lines in Fig. 1. The movement otthe rod 16 in the opposite direction will relieve the tension of spring 27 which will expand d and seat the hair causing it to closely guag in Figs. 2 an the head as shown clearly retract the rod 16 .The means employed to against the tension of spring the lever 17 20. Itwill thus be seen that and its operating ush. utton V w en the button 20 is depressed to move it upwardly into 2 which 27 com resses' the rods in one direction, f
chamber 9, the inner end of said lever will swing downwardly and carry with it the rods 16, 21 and 22, thereby raising the hair 14; and the arms 13 into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1. Immediately this button is released the spring 27 will return the arts to normal position.
hile the invention is shown embodied in a doll obviously it may be used in a toy of any other configuration having movable parts operated by the depression of the push button 20.
Various changes in the form, shape, proportion and other minor details of construction may be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the claimed invention.
1' claim 1. A toy of the class'described comprising a body having a head with abore extending longitudinally through both, other bores communicating with the lower end of said first mentioned bore and divergingupwardly, rods mounted to reciprocate in said bores, movable elements connected with the up per ends of said rods, a lever connected with the opposed ends of said rods and designed to be rocked to simultaneously move and a'coiled spring opposite direction. described comprisor moving them in the 2. A toy of the class ing a body having a head at one end thereof, a bore extending longitudinally through said bodyv and head and enlarged at its opposite ends to form chambers,- a rod mounted to reci rocate in said bore and chambers, a mova 1e element connected with one end of said rod, a coiled spring mounted on said rod. end and connected with said movable element, bores extendin'g from the chamber at the opposite ends of said first mentioned bore and diverging, rods mounted in said diverging bores and projecting into said chamber, movable elements connected on opposite ends of said rods, a lever fulcrumed in said body and having its inner end ex tending into said chamber and loosely connected with said rods, ing said lever whereby the movable elements are moved in one direction, said spring operating to move them in the opposite direction.
3. A toy of the class described'comprising a body having a head with a bore extending longitudinally through said head and body, a bore extending transversely through said body adjacent its connection with the head. arms movablymounted in the outer said transverse bore, bores connecting the outer .ends of said transverse bore. rods mounted in said connecting bores and 'connected to actuate said arms, a rod mounted in said longitudinal bore and connected at its lower end with said arm actuating rods, means for moving said rods in one direction, a spring for moving them in the opposite direction, and a movable element connected with the outer end of said longitudinal rod.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
