Description

H. ROSE.-
Head-Blocks or Clamps for Boot and Shoe Lasts.
N0,l49,883, Patented Apri|21,1874.
it nsSe-s. I 11 v0 111:0 1"
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HENRY ROSE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN HEAD-BLOCKS OR CLAMPS FOR BOOT AND SHOE LASTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,883, dated April 21, 1874; application filed March 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Rosn, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Head- Block or Clamp for Boot and'Shoe Lasts; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and usemy said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to certain improvements in the head-blocks or clamps which are employed to hold boot and shoe lasts, with the work upon them, firmly in place while they are being sewed or pegged or otherwise worked upon, and more particularly to that class of pegging where one plate revolves upon another in a horizontal plane. These head-blocks are hinged to a base-plate so that they can be turned up at right angles to facilitate portions of the work. My invention consists in constructing a rim (to which the last bearing-plate is hinged) with a shoulder or circular flange, so that it fits under an offset of an inside plate which is firmly screwed down to a post. It also consists in supplying the said flanged rim with a thumb-screw,
, one end of which bears against the periphery of the inside fixed plate or ring, thereby enbling me to clamp the rim in any position, the last remaining stationary with it. The link for allowing the upper plate to be raised is attached to a central disk, which freely revolves, by means of a flange, under an offset on the inner side of the fixed plate or ring.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a headblock with my improved base-plate. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken through the center.
A is a head-block or clamp, which is suitably made for securing the last and boot firmly to it while work-is being done. This clamp is hinged to the base-plate at B, and is provided with a slotted link, C, which is secured to the block by a pin,D, and to the baseplate by a pin, E, the link sliding down into a hole in the post beneath when the headblock is closed down, and when the block is turned up at right angles the link prevents it from turning any farther back. My improved base-plate consists of an outer disk, F, with a flange, Gr, (upon which the head-block rests when closed down, and to which it is hinged, asv before shown,) an inner central disk, H, and the annular plate or ring I. This ring I is firmly screwed to the post J, upon which the machine is supported, and retains each of the disks F and H in place, while allowing them to rotate freely. To do this a shoulder, N, is turned around this ring upon the outer circumference, and also on the inner one. The outer disk F has a narrow flange, 0, turned upon it, and this flange fits beneath the shoulder N loosely enough to permit the disk F to rotate when the ring I is screwed down. The inner diskH is madewith a similar flange, which fits beneath the shoulder of the inside of the ring. The link C passes through a hole in the inner disk, as before described, two lugs, K K, serving to steady it, and when it is desired to turn the head-block around the hinge B will turn the outer disk F, while the link C, pressing against the lugs K, serves to turn the inner disk H, without any necessity of connecting the two rings together, or for using any other mechanism. The disks are secured at any point by means of a screw, L, which passes through the flange G, and can be set up against the outside of the shoulder a.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The head-block A, flanged rim G, and inner plate H, in combination with the fixed ring I and set-screw L, all constructed and operated as and for the purpose set forth. I
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
HENRY nosn. n s.]
