To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. LAwLon, a citizen of the United States, residing at T- peka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Opticians Tools; .and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to pliers and particularly to Opticians pliers for clamping the mountings about the rims of eye glasses,-
spectacles and the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, easily constructed pliers which will clamp the mounting about the rims and it is an important feature of my invention that one of the jaws has a substantially universal connection with its actuator so that it can be selfseating on the mounting to be clamped, there being sufficient flexibility between'the jaw and its actuator to allow the jaw to accommodate itself to the position and movement ofthe part to be clamped.
The novel construction of the invention will be understood by reference to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a pliers constructed in accordance with my invention applied to an eye-glass mounting.

The pliers are shown as consistingof two levers 1 and 2, pivoted intermediate their ends by a pintle or pivot bolt 3, around which is wound the intermediate portion of a spring 4:, the free ends 5 and 6 of which bear against the under face of the levers 1 and 2 so that there will be a tendency to Application filed April 10, 1922. The upper end of the lever 1 is provided with outstanding spaced arms 9 and 10, which support the laterally disposed block 11 between them, the block being riveted or fastened in any convenient manner.
The block constitutes a jaw support as well as a guide for the movable jaw member and its outer edge is bifurcated or split, at 12, to provide two upstanding fingers 13 and 14, having grooves 15 and 16 which may receive the mounting to be clamped.
The block 11 co-operates with the inturned overlapping lips or edges 17 and 18 of the arms 9 and 10 in providing a guide for the movable aw member 20. The inturned overlapping lips 1'? and 18 are rigid with the block 11 and they are parallel with it so that the movable block or jaw member 20 may be guided as it moves back and forth. The movable jaw member is provided with grooves 21 and 22 to receive the edges 23 and 24 of the mounting 25 so that when pressure is applied on the hand grips 7 and 8, the jaws consisting of the block 11 and its projections and the block 20 will be moved together so that the fixture can be clamped in the jaws, as shown in Fig. 7.
In order to insure proper'engagement of the edges 23 and 24 of the mounting 25, I provide a universal connection between the jaw 20 and its actuator. The actuator is a link 26, pivoted at 27 to the upper end of the lever 2 and provided with a stud 28, having a groove 29 to provide a head 30, the stud being loosely received in the recess 31 in the end of the block. 7
When the stud is in place, the edges of the groove or recess 31 are peened over slightly, as at 32 and 33, so that they will engage in the groove 29 and prevent withdrawal of the stud 28 when the upper end of the lever 2 is moved in one direction. The peened over connection between the block and its stud or piston will be loose enough to permit a substantially universal connection between the jaw member 20 and the stud so that the jaw will be self-seating. It will be guided, however, between the block 11 and the lips 17 and 18, the jaw 20 being supported upon the block 11 during its movement. Therefore, the member 11 not only constitutes a jaw member but also a guide for its complementary jaw.
The member 11 in effect constitutes a fixed jaw member because in applying the pliers, the hook-shaped projections or fingers 13 and 14 are hooked over the mounting clamp and the lever 2 is manipulated by gripping so that the lever 2 swings on the pivot 3 to bring the movable jaw into engagement with the ec ges 23 and 24 of the mounting clamp 25. As soon as pressure is released on the grip 8, the spring at will cause it to swing back on its pivoted, movable jaw from engagement with the mounting clamp.
I have found that a relatively even, uniform pressure may be applied to the clamp or it .may be readily attached to the rim, and it is an important feature of my invention that the pliers, while eiiicient in operation and simple in construction, are also inexpensive to manufacture.
It will be apparent that the pliers can be applied to the frame without removing any part of the mounting, this being a material advantage over those pliers in which the nose clamps of the mounting have to be removed in order to make room for the clamping jaw of the pliers.
The tool disclosed in this application is particularly. applicable for use as a pliers complementary to the pliers shown in my application Serial No. 471,138, filed May 20, 1921 since it is capable of bending over and finishing the mounting about the rim after the repairs have been carried forward to a certain extent by the tool illustrated in my former application. In other words, the present pliers particularly applies as a finishing tool in connection with eye glasses where the mountings are to be fastened to the rims.

An opticians pliers comprising a pair of levers pivoted one to the other, a transverse jaw member rigid with one lever, a link pivoted to the other lever, a aw block slidable on the jaw member and having a recess in a plane parallel with the plane in which the jaw block slides, said link projecting into the recess and pivotally secured therein.
2. A pliers comprising two levers pivoted one to the other, a jaw member rigid with one lever and having a guide portion, guide lips parallel with the guide portion and in tegral with the lever which supports the jaw member, a link pivoted to the end of the other lever, a jaw slidable on the jaw member, and a pivotal connection between the link and the jaw.
3. A pliers comprising a lever, a flat block carried by the lever rigidly secured at right angles thereto, the block having an upstanding lip to provide a jaw member rigid with the block, a second lever pivoted to the first lever, a longitudinally movable flat block comprising a jaw member slidable on the rigid block, a link carried by the second lever having a part pivotally secured in a longitudinal recess in the longitudinally removable block and mounted to impart movement to the longitudinally movable block when the levers are operated.
4. A pliers comprising a aw member having side portions provided with turned-over lips, a second lever pivoted between the side portions, a block rigid with the first lever and parallel with the lips, the block having right angular propections to provide a material-engaging jaw integral with the block, a complementary jaw member slidable on the block, and a link pivotally connected to the second lever and to the c mplementary jaw member, the thickness of the complementary jaw member being substantially equal to the space between the block and the overlapping lips.
5. A pliers comprising a lever having a transverse block near one end, the ends of the lever being bifurcated to provide overlapping lips rigid with the block, an upstanding projection carried by the outer end of the block, a second lever pivoted to the first, a complementary jaw member slidable on the block and having a longitudinal recess, and a link having a pin pivotally connected in the recess and movably connected to the end .of the; second mentioned lever.
6. A pliers comprising a lever, a rigid jaw member on the lever, said jaw member having a fiat guide face, lips projecting from the lever and parallel with the guide face, a slidable jaw within the space provided between the lips and the guide face, a second lever pivoted to the first mentioned lever, and a pivot connection between the jaw and the second mentioned lever.
