CHARLES A. rox, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
CQ'LLAPSIBLE BOX.
Application filed November 8, 1923. Serial No. 673,573.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. CHARLEsAUoUsr s Fox, a citizen of the United States, and a of New York, borough of Manhattan, in thecounty and State of New York. have invented a new and Improved Collapsible Box, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description. M i y This invention relates to improvements 1D. receptacles and has a collapsible box. i The present invention is designed part cularly as an improvement over 'my United States Patent No. 1,463,074, dated July 24, 1923, and has for one of its objects the-provision of a box of comparatively inexpensive construction, which maybereadily collapsed and extended to operative position and which, when in the latter position, wllliafford'a convenient and relatively rigld container for various articles of merchandise.
Another object is'to provide a box in which the main. portion including the top and bottom sections thereof are formed from a single sheet of material with a collapsible inner lining attached to one section and held in extended position by a portion of said section.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detail description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illus trate a preferred embodiment of the 1nventive idea.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan View of the box in partially open position;
Figure 2 isa section on the line 2-2 of Figurel;
Figure 3 is a section on' the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a section on the line H of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a plan view of the box in its collapsed position.
In the construction of the bov a single sheet of suitable material, such as'cardboard or the like. is employed in forming the botgenerally indicated by the numerals 6 and 7 respectively, said sections being joined by a side wall portion 8 which is common to both sections and which forms a hinge connection therebetween.
The bottom section 6 further includes the side wall 9 opposite the wall 8 and the end lapping relation and r gid; corners.
particular reference to y the box is in operative position.
walls 10, adjacent ends of the walls 9 and 10 being provided with extensions 11 and 12, respectively, which are arranged in oversecured by means of suitable fasteners 13 to form reinforced and of the end walls 10 the material of which the box is 3 formed is cut to provide a locking tongue-14 for a purpose which will presently appear.
An inner lining lfi'for the bottom section 6 is provided and is formed of twostrips of material having adjacent ends. overlapped and secured together by suitable fasteners 16 (see Figure 2). The width of the lining 15 is greater than the depth of the side and end walls 9 and 10 of the section 6 so that a considerable portion of the lining will extend above the top edge of said section when In order that the lining 15 may be collapsed, as shown in Figure 5, the ends of said lining are scored or creased, as indicated at 17.. intermediate the nds thereof so that said ends can be folded inwardly and the sides of said lining collapsed one upon the other, as clearly indicated in Figure 5. One of the sides front side 151's provided intermediate its upper and lower edges with slots 19 forreceiving the locking tongues 14 formed upon the ends of the side walls 10 so as to maintain the lining 15 in its extended or operative position.
The top section 7 of the box includes the end walls 20 and front or side wall21 which have adjacent-ends overlapped andsecured together by fasteners 22, as clearly shown .in Figures land 5, said adjacent ends'bein'gsuitablyscored to permit of a folding thereof, as shown .in the latter figure, when the box is collapsed. The portions 23 of the end walls 20 which overlap the side wall 8 common to both of the sections G and 7 are secured to said side wall by fasteners 24 and are scored or creased, as indicated at 25, to permit of folding of said portions 23, as shown in Figure 1. By scoring each portion 23, as indicated, said portion will fold over upon the wall 8 and against the end portions of the free end of the inner lining 15 when the box is in closed position.
At the opposite end of eachextended The side wall 21 01": the top section 7 is provided with an extension 26 which, when the top section "is folded over upon the bottom section and lining 15, will project between the secured side of-said lining and the side Wall 9 of the bottom 1. In a collapsible box, bottom and top sections hingedly connected and each section including side and end walls, an inner collapsible lining secured to a wall of onesection and of a greater width than the walls of said sections, and means formin of one of said sections and engagea 1e with said lining to maintain the same in an extended position.
2. In a collapsible'box, bottom and top sections hingedly connected and each section including side and end walls, an inner collapsible lining secured to one of said sections and extending beyond the walls thereof, said lining being provided with slots at a point remote from its attachment to said section, and locking tongues carried by the end walls of the section to which said lining is secured and engageable .in the slots in said lining to maintain the lining in extended position.
3. In a collapsible box, bottom and top sections hingedly sideand end walls, an, inner lining secured to a side wall otsaid bottom section and of a width substantially equal to the combined forming connected and each having provided the endwalls of said bottom section and engageable in said slots to maintain saidlining in an extended position.
4. llna collapsible box, bottom and top sections formed of a single'sheet of material scored to provide an intermediate portion forming a hinge connection between said sections and also providing a side wall common to both of said sections, a collapsible inner lining secured to said bottom section and capable of being extended to a position in engagement with said intermediate portion when the sections are in closing'position, and means carried by one of said sections and engageable with the lining to maintain the same in its extended position.
-5..ln a collapsiblev box, bottom and top sections formed of a single sheet of material scored to' provid an intermediate portion a hinge connection between said sections, said bottom and top sections in? cluding end walls also formed by scoring said sheet of material, portions of said side walls overlapping said intermediate portion, means for securing said overlapping portions to said intermediate portion, locking tongues cut from said overlapping portions and forming parts of the end walls of one of said sections, and a collapsible lining secured to the latter section and engageable by said locking tongues when said lining is in its extended position to maintain said lining in such position.
