and 17 and 16 and 17 represent the side forming portions which are united to the sides of portion 15 by means of portions 18 and 19 which are bound or outlined by the scored lines 90 and 21, and by the cuts 22 to enable the portions 18 and 19 to be folded face to face upon the under side of the edges of portion 15 and to which they are preferably firmlyr glued to thereby form the sides of the extension 24 of the lid. 16 and 17 and 16 and 17 after pasting and in the set-up position to form the lid, extend outwardly from the portion 15 at substantially right angles thereto as shown in Fig. 5, but for shipment the portions 16 and-17 and 16 and 17 preferably lie flat upon the face of the portion 15 as shown either in full or in dotted line in Fig. 2. At opposite ends of the portion 16 are portions 25 divided therefrom by scored lines 27, said portions 25 constituting a portion of the ends of the lid when folded or set-up and to connect the portion 16 to the ends of the lid section. The portion 17 is in like manner and for like purpose provided at opposite ends with portions 28 divided from portion 17 by means of scored lines 30.

The sections 31 are folded along the score lines 33 so as to come face to face against the under face of the portion 15 and to form therewith the end portions 32 of the extension. The portions 34 fold along the scored lines 35 and extend outwardly at substantially right angles from the portion 15 when the lid is folded as shown in Fig. 5, but lie preferably in the same plane with

In the folded or set-up position portions 36 are folded along the scored lines 38, so as to lie face to face against the end portions 34 with a pair of

34 and 36. Cuts or slots 37 are provided along a portion of the scored lines 35 and the tongues or portions 39 are provided with slits to form locking barbs or tongues 39. The tongues 39 are folded along the scored lines 40 and introduced through the cuts or slots 37 so as to lie face to face upon the inner or under side of the portion 15 and to key or lock the end and side portions of the lid seetion into position shown in Fig. 5, substantially at right angles to the portion 15. As illustrated in Figs. 6, 7, and 14 the tongues 39 are drawn through the slots 37 tightly and firmly into position whereupon the tongues 39 acting as barbs or locking members enter between the sections 31 and the section 15 so as to prevent retraction of the tongues 39 through the slots 37 except by practically tearing away the tongues 39. The effect of this locking of the tongues 39 in place is to greatly add to the strength of the boxes particularly when charged with candy, soap or other relatively heavy articles, so as to prevent the weight of the contents from distorting or unlocking the boxes, and also to prevent the boxes being crushed by the exterior pressures. In the knock-down position shown in Fig. 2, the

For full telescopic extension boxes, blanks for the lower or container sections, 43, similar to Figs. 1 and 2, but of slightly smaller dimensions, so as to telescope into the lid sections 42, are provided, and are folded as heretofore described for the lid sections. The side extensions 24 formed by gluing the portions 18 and 19 down upon the edges of the portion 15 serve to greatly strengthen and stiffen the respective box sections, also the interengaging folding and locking of the ends of the side portions with the end portions serve to produce firm and rigid box sections equal in strength to the stayed or non-folding box sections heretofore in use.

lVhe-re it is desired to produce shoulder boxes or partially telescopic boxes two

45 and 46 are formed by folding as heretofore described from blanks such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, of equal dimensions. A folding skeleton box frame or collar 47, shown in Fig. 3, is also provided and inserted into the container box section 46 and if desired secured thereto by employed, and such boxes may be employed for general purposes with a uniform flat color or printed design and without having an outer facing paper applied to them after being folded. For general purposes any colors, designs, trade marks, printing or engraving desired may be applied directly to the fiat blanks before folding. Where it is desired however to produce special or high grade boxes such as employed for certain grades of candies and toilet articles, many of which are highly ornamented and colored, and are designed to bear the trade marks, advertising matter and insignia of the manufacturers of their contents, it is designed thatthe boxes in knock-down condition Fig. 2, be shipped from the box manufacturer' to the manufacturer of the contents, in whose place ofbusiness the boxes are folded or set up, and are then and thereafter faced exteriorly by applying a sizing and facing sheets or strip of paper of such color, or bearing such designs printing, or engraving as may serve to, produce a pleasing and artistic effect and identify th-e contents ofthe box with the manufacturer thereof.

It is designed to print the blanks, on

one or both sides in their flat condition in a variety of solid colovs and pattern designs, and to so form the extensions as to provide smoothly rounded edges and .unbroken color at the outer extremity of the extensions, and to so match the cut edges of the blank at the corners, preferably by a miter-type of joint 22 as to avoid exposing cut edges of different color to that of the faces of the extension, and also to give the saine miterioint appearance as in the stayed type of boxes.

Vhere so desired I contemplate furnishing blanks for folding extension bores to be shipped in flat condition and folded and set up either with or without the addition of facing paper, at the factory of the box maker or at the factory of the manufacture; of the contents of the box.

It frequently happens that relatively wide boxes are required, as for instance handkerchief boxes` and in Fig. 11, l have illustrated the use of two locking tongues A50 and 5l at each end of the box in place of a single locking tongue as shown in 1. Each of said

In the modification vshown in Fig. 12, which is also designed to be applied yto relatively wide boxes, a central tongue 54 is employe-d at-each end and provided with a barb v55 t0 lock it in its set-upv posi-4 tion after the tongue 54 has been inserted through the central slit 56. Also at each end ofthe blank are provided additional slits 57 and 58 in line with and at opposite sides of the slit 56, yand

It will be noted that while means previously employed to lock folding boxes is not adapted to the-production and locking ofrelatively shallow boxes suoli as employed as handkerchiefboxes for instance, due to want of space forthe development of locking means, my improved locking means does not require any specific depth of box-for its applicatiomand can be successfully ap` plied to exceedingly shallow boxes where required. lso that when the box is once sets up and locked 1t is practically impossible. to unlock it and return it to its knocked-down condition, and hence that it is not liable to become accidentally unlocked in use so as to lose its contents,-thereby insuring a folding box of equal strength and rigidity with the stayed boxes heretofore employed for candy, soap, and other articles of material weight.

It will also be noted that my `improved locking means provides at leasttwo unbroken thicknesses of material at each end to insure rigidity at the ends of the box while the

16 and 17 provide side Walls of double thickness of Inaterial thereby reinforcing the side-Walls of the box to equal rigidity with that of its ends. The box with end and side walls of double thickness and when rigidly locked in its set-up position is sufliciently rigid for all ordinary purposes, such as use for candy, shoe, and soap boxes for instance. Wiere it is desired to reinforce the bottoms and tops of the boxes to double thickness, or to improve the interior finish or appearance I provide separate sections of card-board 62 of nearly the same length as the sections 15 and of somewhat greater width, which members 62 are scored at the sides along the lines 63 and-6e. These sections 62 are adapted to be insertedinto the box and lid members after said box and lid members have been set-up, and when so inserted and pressed into contact with the inner face of the sections 15 and the exposed faces of the tongues 39, the

16 and 17 as shown in Fig. 8 to firmly lock the sections 62 in position to conceal the tongues 39, and to reinforce the top and bottom of the box or either of them to double thickness. I am thus enabled to produceI folding boxes from practically the same blank of progressively different degrees of rigidity according to the service required, and to ship the blanks in the fiat condition, to be set up where required for use, and of various sizes up to suit boxes or larger if required.

The articles herein illustrated and described are capable of considerable modification without departing from the principle of my invention.

What I claim is:

1. A blank for a folding box section to constitute a box lid or a box container comprising a main portion, to form the top or bottom of a box, a plurality of portions connected to the side and end margins of said main portion and adapted to be folded upon one of the faces of said main portion to form an extension margin, a pair of side wall portions connected to the outside margin of the portions to be folded in upon the main portion at its sides and provided with end extensions at opposite ends of said side wall portions to fold inwardly and interengage with the end wall portions, end wall portions connected to the outer edges of the portions to be folded upon the race of the main portion at its ends, said end wall portions each comprising a section to engage the inner face of an end extension of each side wall portion, a section to engage the outer face of an end extension of each-side wall portion, a slit near the base of said end portion, a locking tongue to enter said slit and a locking member carried by said tongue to prevent retraction of said tongue, said tongue and locking member serving to positively lock said side wall portions and end wall portions together in set-up position.

2. A blank for folding box section to constitute a box lid or box container comprising a main portion to form the top or bottom of a box, a plurality of relatively narrow portions connected to the outer margin of said main portion and adapted to be folded upon one of the faces of said main portion to form an extension margin, side wall portions at the outer sides of said relatively narrow side portions provided with end extensions extending past the ends of said main portion and adapted to be folded inwardly to interengao'e with end portions, end wall portions connecte-d to the relatively narrow portions at the ends of said main port-ion, each of said end portions comprising a section to engage the inner face of an end extension from each of said side wall portions, a section to engage the outer face of an end extension from each of said side wall portions, a slit near the base of said end portion, a locking tongue to enter said slit, and a locking member carried by said tongue to prevent retraction of said tongue, said tongue and locking member serving to positively lock said side wall portions and end wall portions together in set-up position.

3. A one piece folding blank for extension box sections to constitute a box lid or box container, comprising a main portion having relatively narrow extension portions at its opposite sides folded over upon one face of said main section and attached thereto, main side wall portions having reinforcing side wall portions folded over upon and attached to said main side wall portions to form finished side wall edges and reinforced side walls, said side wall portions having extensions separated therefrom by score lines and said wall portions and their extensions being adapted to occupy a plane substantially parallel to and at one `side of said main portion, and end wall portions at opposite ends of and in substantially the same plane with said main portion, each of said end wall portions being subdivided by score lines and a slit into two end wall members and a locking tongue, to lock said side wall and end wall portions together when set up.

A one piece folding blank for extension box sections to constitute a box lid or box container, comprising a main portion having relatively Vnarrow extension portions upon opposite sides folded over upon one face of said main section and attached thereto, side wall portions attached to said extension portions having end extensions separated therefrom by score lines, said side wall portions occupying a plane substantially parallel-to and at one side of the plane of said main portion, and end wall portions at opposite ends of and in substantially the same plane with said main portion, each of said end wall portions being subdivided by score lines and slits into two end wall members, a locking tongue and al barb to lock said side wall and end wall portions together when set-up and to retain said tongue in lockedfposition.

'5. A blank for a folding box section to constitute a box lid or box container comprising a main portion, side wall portions at the sides of said main portion provided with end members extending past the ends of said main portion, end wall portions at the ends of said main portion comprising two end wall members, a locking tongue and a barb to prevent retraction of said tongue separated by score lines and slits, the end wall members adjacent to the main portion being folded inside of the end members of the side wall portions, and the outer end wall members being folded outside of the end llO members of the side wall portions and the locking tongue and barb Yinsertedthrough slits in the end Wall portions to lock the end and side Wall portions together and to prevent accidental retraction of said tongues after being set up into a box section.

6. A blank for a folding box section to constitute a box lid or box container comprising a main portion, main side Wall portions, reinforcingl side Wall portions tobe .folded in upon the face of said main side Wall portions, said side Wall portions being provided with endmembers extending past the ends of said main portion, end Wall por'- tions at the ends of said main portion comprising tivo end Wall members and a locking tongue separated by score lines and slit, the end Wall members adjacent to the main ortion being` folded inside of the end mem ers of the side Wall portions and the outer end wall members being folded outside of the end members of the side Wall portions, and the locking tongues inserted through said slits to lock the end and side Wall portions together when the blank is set up into a box section.

7. A blank for a folding box lid or "box container comprising a main portion, side wall portions at the sides of said main portion provided with end members extending past the ends of said main portion, end Wall portions at the ends` of said main portion comprising two end Wall members and a locking tongue separated by score lines and a slit, the end Wall members adjacent to the main portion being folded inside of the end members of the side Wall portions, and the outer end Wall members being folded outside of the end members of the side Wall portions, and the locking tongues inserted through said slits to lock the end and side wall portions together when the blank is setup into a box section, and means to prevent the retraction of said tongues after said box sections have been set-up.

8. A blank for a folding box section to constitute a box lid or box container comprising a main portion, main side Wall portions, reinforcing side Wall portions to be .folded in upon the face of said main side wall portions, said side Wall portions being provided with end members extending past the ends of said main portion, end Wall portions at the ends of said main portion comprising tivo end Wall members and a looking tongue separated by score lines and a slit, the end Wall members adjacent to the main portion being folded inside of the end members of the side Wall portions and the outer end wall members being folded outside of the end members of the side Wall portions, and the locking tongues inserted through said slits to lock the end and side Wall ortions together when the blank is set-up into a box section, and means to prevent the retraction of said tongues after said box sections lrave been set-up.

9. A blank for a folding box section to constitute a box lid or box container comprising a main portion, a plurality of portions ionnected to the side and end margins of said main portion and adapted to befold main portion at its ends, said end wall porl tions each comprising a section to engage thc inner face of an end extension of each side Wall portion, a section to engage the outer face of an end extension of each side Wall portion. and a plurality of locking members to enter slits at the base of said respective end Wall portions to hold the respective sections of the respective end wall portions at frequent intervals in close contact with the end extensionsof the side Wall portions, and one or more barb members to prevent disengagement of said `locking members.

A blank for a folding box section to constitute a box lid or box container comprising a main portion, side Wall portions at the sides of said main portion provided With end members extending past the ends of said main portion, end Wall portions at the fee ends of said main portion each comprising two end wall members, a plurality of tongues adapted to lock said end wall members together at frequent intervals and to prevent retraction of said tongues separated by score lines and slits, the end wall members adjacent tothe main portion being folded inside of the end members of the side wall port-ions, and the outer Aend wall members being folded outside of the end members of the side wall portions and the locking tongues inserted through slits in the end wall portions to lock the end and side wall portions together and to prevent accidental retraction of said tongues after'being set up into a box section.

12. A blank for a folding box section to constitute a box lid or a box container com- )rising a main portion to form the top or bottom of a box, a plurality of portions connected to the side and end margins of said main portion and adapted to be folded upon one of the faces of said main portion -to form an extension margin, a pair of side wall portions connected to the outside margins of the portions to be folded in upon the main portion at its sides and provided with end extensions at opposite ends of said side wall portions to fold inwardly and interengage with end wall portions, end wall portions connected to the outer edges of the portions to be folded upon the face of the main portion at its ends, said end wall por tions each comprising a section to engage the inner face of an end extension of each side wall portion, a section to engage the outer face of an end extension of each side wall portion, and a locking tongue to enter a slit at the base of said respective end portions to positively locksaid side wall portions and end wall portions together.

13. A blank for folding box section to constitute a box lid or box container comprising a main portion to form the top or bottom of a box, a plurality of relatively narrow portions connected to the outer margin of said main portion and adapted to be folded upon one of the faces of said main portion to form an extension margin, side wall portions at the outer sides of said relatively narrow side portions provided with endn wardly to interengage with end portions, end wall portions connected to the relatively narrow portions at the ends of said main portion, each of said portions comprising a section to engage the inner face of an end extension from each of said side wall portions, a section to engage the outer face of end extensions from each of said side wall portions, and a locking tongue to enter a slit at the base of said respective end portions to positively lock said side wall portions and end wall portions together when set up to resist weight and pressure from the contents of the box.

A one piece folding blank for extension box sections to constitute a box lid or box container, comprising a main portion having relatively narrow extension portions at its opposite sides, folded over upon one face of said main section and attached thereto, side wall portions having end extensions separated therefrom by score lines, said side wall portions occupying a plane substantially parallel to and at one side of the plane of said main portion', and end wall portions at opposite ends of and in substantially the same plane with said main portion, each of said end wall portions being subdivided by score lines and a slit into two end wall members and a locking tongue to lock said side wall and end wall portions together when set up.

l5. A blank for a folding box' section to constitute a box lid or box container comprising a main portion, side wall portions at the sides of said main portion provided with end members extending past the ends of said main portion, end wall portions at the ends of said main portion comprising two end wall members and a locking tongue separated by score lines and a slit, the end wall members adjacent to the main portion being folded inside of the end members of the side wall portions, and the outer end wall members being folded outside of the end members of the side wall portions, and the locking tongues inserted through slits in the end wall portions to lock the end and side wall portions together when the blank is set up into a box section.
