Description
UNITED STATES rPATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. OROOKER, OF WELLSVIIJLE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO LAROY S. ANDERSON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT m PuMPs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,84 l, dated April 21, 1874; vapplication filed September 24, 1873.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, JAMES H. OROCK'ER, of Wellsville, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Pumps, of which the following l therein, for securing it to the working barrelA ofthe pump, and al shoulder, b, at the lower end of said thread. The lower end O of the casing is contracted into a neck, c, in 'which a thread is cut to receive the pipes extending into the water. D is a tube extendingvfrom the neck to the screw-thread a, centrally through the coupling-casing, and of about onehalf its diameter, so as to leave a space, d, all around it. This space constitutes the sandchamber, and at or near its bottom one outlet or more, with a screw=stopper, e, is provided,
so that the sand may be removed as it accuzmulates.V
The check-valve may be of ordinaryT con= struction, and its rim rests on the shoulder b, with the valve proper covering the end of the tube D, so that as the water is elevated the sand, &c., in it is deflected into the chamber d. The valve is held in place by the working barrel when the coupling is screwed into place.
The casing A'and tube D are cast in one piece-that is, together-preferably, and the threads, stoppers, and valve afterward added. Any suitable device other than a screw-stopper may be used to close the outlets.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.-
A coupling or connection for the working barrel and pipes of a pump, constructed with an outer shell or casing and an internal tube, cast in one piece, between which shell and tube a sand or sediment chamber is formed, substantially as described.
To the above specification of my invention I have signed my name this Sth day of Septembcr, A. D. 1873.
JAMES H. CROOKER.
