Description

JoHN MACLABEN.
Compression. Cocks."
No.'124,840. PatentedMa5rch19,.14a72.
JOHN MAOLAREN, OF SORANTON, PEN NSYLVANIMA IMPHROVENIENT IN COMPRESSlON-COCKS.
Speccation forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,840, dated March 19, 1872.
Specification describing an Improvement in Compression-Cocks, invented by JOHN MAGLA- REN, of Scranton, county of Luzerne, State of Pennsylvania.
This invent-ion is an improvement upon that for which Letters Patent dated January 23, 1872, were issued to myself'.` It relates to that class of cocks in Which the valve is a gum ball, which, when pressed against its seat by the stem of the cock, closes the orice. The invention consists in such a ball, when furnished with a metallic guide projecting from its circumference and combined with a stem having a central orice running entirely through it, wherein is placed said guide, the same having a screw-thread on its lower end; the ball also having upper and lower brass caps; all as hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section.
A is the aforesaid gum Aball, and a the nietallie guide, having a thread on its lower end, by means of which it is screwed into the ball. B is the stern of the cock, and b the oriiice therein for the reception of the guide a, the lat-ter being shorter than the said orifice, and having on its upper end a grooved burr, a', by means of which and of a shoulder, b', at the lower end of the -stem,the latter is connected Wit-l1 the guide in such a manner that, if the ball cannot be raised from its seat by the fluid at any time, by reason of obstructions, it can be raised by turning the stem B, and thus causing the shoulder b to lift the burr a. The groove in the burr is for the reception ot the point of a screw-driver, by means of which to hold the guide While screwing or unscreWing the ball. The lower end ot said stem is hollowed out to receive a portion ofthe ball, and to the latter are attached upper and lower brass-tapped caps c c', through which the guide a passes, the function of the caps being to protect the ball from Wear, the caps abutting against the stem .and seat; By unscrewing the ball and caps from the guide they can, at any time, be separated from the stern B.
I claim as my inventionl The ball A, provided With the tapped cap c c and guide af, and combined With the stem B having an orifice, b, running from end to end thereof, the guide a passing into said orice, and having a grooved burr, a', on its up per end, all arranged as specified.
