To all whom t may concern.:

Be it known that I, IRVING R. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wauwatosa, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trucks, of which the followingis a specification.

The present invention relates to trucks.

More particularly the present invention relates to trucks of kthevariety commonly referred to as hand trucks although the invention is also applicable to other varieties of truck.

An object of the present invention is to provide a truck which may be readily assembled and disassembled andwhich provides a sturdy structure at a minimum cost.

A further object is to provide a structure which may be shipped in knock-down condition and which may be assembled with the exercise of only a minimum amount ci dis-- cretion on the part of a workman. j

Broadlv stated, the present invention contemplates the use of side pieces which may be of wood or other material. said side pieces being joined rigidly together at their end portions to form a ri id Jframe. The ini-` provements contained in the present invention relate to the means for joining said side pieces together as well as to the complete structure.

The side pieces of the truck are indicated by the numerals 1 1. The side pieces 1 1 are shown located to form a rectangular frame, the corners between adjacent side pieces being provided with clamping members which will be described hereinafter.

The clamping members at the left hand end of the truck, as shown in Figure 1, are indicated by the numerals 2 2, while the clamping members at the right hand end of the truck are indicated by the numerals 3 3. The clamping members 2 2 each comprise a pair of jaw members 4 and 5. Each jaw member 4 fits within a corner between adjacent side pieces v1 1 while a jaw member 5 fits outside of said'cornerf'Eachjaw member 4 has a pair of jaws indicated by the numerals 6 6, while each jaw member 5 has a pair of jaws 7 7. Eachjaw 6 lies in parallel relation with the cooperating jaw 7 and is adapted to tightly grip the end portion of' a side piece 1. Bolts 8 8'are provided 'for `drawing the jaw members 4 and 5 toward jaw closing position ,whereby said jaw members will tightly grip and unite adjacent side pieces 1 1. ing, keachbolt S is angularly placed relative 'to the adjacent side pieces 1 1, said bolt extending in a direction having substantially equal angularity with reference to the two adjacent side pieces. Each'of the jaw members 5 5 is provided with a socket portion 9 for the reception [of an'upright or standard 9, which may serve as a handle. 1n the claims forming part of this specification the socket portions 9 9 are referred tc as handle members.

Referring now to the clamping means at the right hand end of the truck as shown in Figure 1, each of said clamping means comprises a pair of jaw members 10 and 11.

Each jaw member-,11 is provided with avpair of jaws 6 6, while each jaw member 10 is provided with jaws 7 7 ywhich may be similar in construction to the jaws of the clamping members :previously described. Each jaw member ,10 is provided with a rsocket member 9 serving the samey purpose as the corresponding structure in the jaw members at the left hand end of the truck. Bolts 8 8 serve to draw together the jaw members 10 and 11 to tightly grip the end portions of the side members to hold same rigidly together. Thejaw members 11 11 may each be provided with a socket member 12 for the reception of the stud 13 of a caster 14. The roller member of said caster 14 is indicated by the numeral 15.

Oppositely placed Lside members 1 1 may be provided on their under sides with As will be clear fromthe draw'-` brackets 16 for the reception of an axle 17. Said axle 17 will carry a pair of spaced wheels 18 18 which with casters 15 15 will invention has been described in detail. Many modiiications will occur to those skilled in the art. It is intended in this atent to cover all such modifications that fall within the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States, is:

l. In combination, a plurality of side pieces, located to Jform a substantially closed fra-me and clamping means 'for rigidly holding together adjacent end portions of said side pieces, each of said clamping means comprising a pair of clamping pieces provided with jaws :tor holding the= end portions of adjacent side pieces, the angle between the jaws of each clamping piece being the same as the angle between the jaws of its co-operating clamping piece andy parallel bolt means for drawing said clamping pieces toward jaw closing position, each of said clamping means being provided with a handle member.

2. A truck comprising side pieces located to form a substantially closed fra-me, clamping means for securing together end portions of adjacent side pieces, each of said clamping means comprising` a pair ot aw members adapted to tit inside and outside of the cor- -ner between adjacent side pieces and means for drawing said jaw members toward closing position, each of said clamping means being provided with `a handle member and certain of said clamping means being provided with caster receiving sockets.

3. A truck comprising side pieces located to form asubstantially closed frame, clamping means for securing together end portions of adjacent side pieces, each of said clamping means comprising a pair of jaw members adapted to fit. inside and outside of the corner between adjacent side pieces and means for drawing said jaw members toward closing position, certain of said clamping means being provided with caster receiving sockets.

A. truck, comprising side pieces `located to form a substantially closed frame, clamping means for securing together end portions of adjacent side pieces, each of said clamping means comprising a pair of jaw members adapted to lit inside and outside of the corner between adjacent side pieces, and means for drawing said jaw members toward closing position, each of said jaw members comprising a pair of angularly placed jaws, the angle between the jaws of one of said jaw members being the same as the angle between the jaws of its co-operating jaw member, said drawing means comprising a plurality o'tparallel bolt means.

5. In combination, a plurality of side pieces located to form a substantially closed trame and clamping means for rigidly holding together adjacent end portions of said side pieces, each of said clamping means comprising a pair of clamping pieces provided with jaws for holding the end po-rtions of adjacent side pieces, the angle between the jaws of each clamping piece being the same as the angle between the jaws of its co-operating clamping piece and bolt means for drawing the clamping pieces of each of said clamping means toward jaw closing position, each of said clamping means being provided with a handle member, said bolt means extending in a direction having substantially the same angularity of each of the two adjacent side pieces.
