C. LEDIN CYLINDER LOCK Filed May 29. 1923 Patented lune 17, 1924.

CHARLES LEDIN, or STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, AssIenoa TO THE YALE & rowan MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
or STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
CYLINDER LOCK.
Application filed May 29, 1923. Serial No. 642,249.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LEDIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinder Looks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a-ppertains to make and use the same. i 1 f This invention relates to improvements in cylinder locks,-one object of the invention being to provide a construction whereby a single spring pressed looking bar to lock the plug against rotation shall; be provided and which shall be operable by a plurality of key-actuated lever-tumblers to unlock the plug from the cylinder so thatsaid plug may be turned. L 1
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointedout in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,-
F igzure 1 is a front view of a lock in which my improvements are embodied,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Figure 3 isa view in transverse section.
Figures 4, 5 and 6 are detail views.
Figure 7 is a View illustrating tumblerlever guides, and
Figure 8 is a view showing a modification of the plug.
The cylinder or casing member of the lock is represented at 1 and an elongated portion 2 of said cylinder or casing is pro vided with a recess 3 for a purpose hereinafter explained.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, the plug or rotatable member of the lock may comprise a housing member & provided at one end with a head 5 having a part which enters the rear end of the housing 4 and at the other end of said housing a cap or head 6 is provided and is made with a peripheral flange 7 encircling the front end of the plug housing, and said cap 6 is made with a key-slot 8. The plug member also includes a plurality of pairs of guides 9, the guides of each pair being spaced apart so as to provide a keyslot for the plug and the pairs of guides are direction.
'is shown at 18 and the slots at 1-9.
spaced apart to receive lever-tumblers v1-0 betweenthein The caps or heads of thehousmg and the guides 9 and also spacers ll' are held in place by means of bolts 12 and 13 which pass through said caps or heads, guides and spacers. The lever-tumblers are pivotally mounted upon the bolt 12 and pressed in'one direction by springs such as shown at 1 L, Figure 3,-each of'said lever tumblers being provided at its free end with a toe 15 to engage the belt 1 3 and thus limit the movement of said lever-tumblers in one Each of the several lever-stumblers 18 provided wlth an upwardly projecting lug or tooth 1 6 and between itsends, each lever-tumbler is made with a lower keyengaging edge 17 extending across. the-keyslot of the plug.
Instead of constructing the plug as above described it may be made in a single piece, a as a die cast-111g and provided wlthslots for the accommodation of the tumblers, as shown In Figure 8 in which the body of the plug In the plug construction previously described and shown 1n Flgrtres 2 and 3, the
said slot is bent inwardly to provide parallel guide flanges A locking block 22 enters a the elongated slot 20 and normally projects partially within the recess 3 so as to normally lock the plug to the cylinder member of the look. A follower 23 is located within the recess 3 and rests against the locking block 22. The follower is provided with sockets into which springs 24 project, the upper ends of said springs bearing against the upper wall of the recess 3. The
springs 24: normally press the locking block 1n an inward or downward directionbut sufficient movement of the locking block to latter and the lugs or teeth 16 of said tuiir. blers to be moved out of line with the locking block, thus releasing the latter, and the spring pressed follower will operate to move the locking block inwardly or downwardly until it engages the upper edge portions of the lever-tumblers between the lugs or teeth 16' and the free ends of said tumblers,at which time the upper or outer edge of the locking block will be in alignment with the division line between the plug and cylinder so that the plug may be rotated.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a cylinderlock, the combination of a cylinder member provided with an extension having a recess therein, a plug revolubly mounted in said cylinder member, a plurality of lever-tumblers mounted in said plug and projecting across the key-slot thereof, a single locking block entering said plug and the recess of the cylinder member,
and spring pressure means located in said,
recess and engaging said locking block and normally pressing the same against the V lever-tumblers.
2. In a cylinder lock, the combination with a cylinder member provided with a recess, a plug. revolubly mounted in said cylinder member and having a slot commember,
municating with the recess in the cylinder a plurality of lever-tumblers mounted in said plug and projecting across the key-slot thereof, each of said levertumblers having an upwardly projecting lug, spring means for moving said tumblers in one direction, and means for limiting such movement of the tumblers, of a locking block entering the slot in the plug and adapted to enter the recess in the cylinder member, and spring pressure means located in said recess and engaging said locking block. V Y
3. In a cylinder lock, the combination with a cylinder member having a recess, of a plugcomprising a housing, heads at respective ends of said housing and spaced guides adapted to form a keyslot, longitudinal bolts connecting said parts, springpressed lever-tumblers mounted on one of said bolts between the guides and limited in one direction by the other bolt, said housing member of the plug having a slot normally in line with the recess in the cylinder member, a locking block movable in said slot and normally held in locked relation to the cylinder member by the lever-tumblers,
across the key-slot and between the guides,
the other of said bolts forming a stop for said lever-tumblers and each of said levertumblers having an upwardly projecting lug, a locking block mounted in the slot of the plug housing and adapted to enter the recess in the cylindervmember, a follower located in said recess and engaging said locking block, and spring means in said recess and engaging said follower.
In testimony whereof, I have signed" this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. r
