To all? who'mct 'nrag/ concern. f
Be it known that I, MA'UItIGE GREENBERG, a citizen of-thdUnitedStates, residing at ing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the; accompanying drawings, which form a art' ofthrs s'fpecifir cation.
My invention rela tes, to an improved hat conformer, such; as a arsed {in connect on whil 'l The present" form of hat conformers is elliptical-shaped and formed from a relatively narrow band of light metal, usually covered with cloth. The hat conformer is adapted to rest upon a Womans head or, rather, upon her hair, and, being provided with means for attaching it to a hat, serves to support the hat upon the head.
The hat conformer being made separate from the hat and being of light metal and possessed of certain resiliency will, or can, be made to adapt itself to various shaped heads or to various forms of hair dress. After a hat conformer is properly positioned on the head, a hat is Placed upon the head and, when positioned in becoming or desired position, secured to the hat conformer. The conformer then determines the fit of the hat and serves to support it on the wearers head.
By the use of hat conformers, a single size of hat may be made to fit a variety of head sizes and variations in the dress and amount of hair.
The hat conformers heretofore used are open to a number of objections, which make their use a source of discomfort and thus greatly minimize their value. Chief among the objections to the present hat conformers is that they tend, under the weight of a hat supported, to constrict the head, and particularly to press upon the forehead, with the result that if the hat is of any material weight the use of a hat conformer results in great discomfort; and thus the advanta es of the device are overborne by the disadvantages.
Now it is the object of my invention to provide an improved hat conformer, which will he possessed of all the advantages of the present forms, to a superior degree, and at the same time will be free of the disadvantages, whereby a highly eflicient and practically usable structure will be made available. v
Further obje'ct's'of my invention are to provide'a structure which will be simple and economical in'construction, and which will be efficient and durable in use.
Having so'w indicated, in'a general way,
th nature; purpose and advantage of -my invention,fI will proceed to 'a' detaileddescription 't liereof, with reference to the ac-' companyingfirawings, in which I have -il lustrated a preferred embodiment, ,ahd'jiri '-=Fi ."1-flea-perspective view "of a conformer embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view of a detail of the device illustrated in Fig. 1, showing the means for securing the conformer to a hat at the rear.
Fig. 3 is a view of a detail of the device illustrated in Fig. 1, showing the means for securing the conformer to a hat adjacent the front.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a hat. with a part of the brim removed, showing the conformer in plac in the hat.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1,
there is provided an open-ended frame a,
formed from a strip of light resilient material, as steel, bent upon itself. The ends of the arms of the frame are cut to form points I), b, and the edges at the rear are slit and bent outwardly to form points 0, c.
To the ends of the frame (Z are attached, by means of points 6 formed adjacent the free ends of the frame. the ends of a length of elastic material or band (Z, which is "ecured at points substantially equidistant from each other and from its ends to the frame a at opposite points substantially equidistant from its ends by rivets f, f.
9 indicates a hat having the usual crown within which the conformer is adapted to be secured, as shown in Fig.4.
The operation of my improved hat conformer will. it is believed. be obvious by reference to Figs. 1 and 4, from which it will be observed that the hat conformer will be supported on the head through the elastic material (1, attached to the frame a. The front part of the conformer will be secured to the hat by means of the points I), b, and the rear part of the conformer will be secured to the hat by means of the points 0, 0. When so secured in the hat, the conformer will ser e to support the hat. and insurefitsproper fit. L
In the use of the conformer in accordance with my invention, there is no discomfort to the wearer; the hat is held in place by the elastic material; and constriction of the head and pressure on the forehead are eliminated by the shape of the conformer frame n the head leaving the forward end open.
It is obvious that various-changes may be made in the specific embodiment described without departing from my invention. 7
.Having now fully described my invention,
what I claim and desire to protect by Let ters Patent is: t I I 1. A hat conformer and retaincn compris-:
ing a flexible memberbent upon itself to form-Ia frame open at one end andan elastic member,- securedadjacent the free ends of the flexible .memberand oppositely secured togsaid thereby. I i 2. A hat conformer and retainer comprismember within the frame formed ing a flexible membe r bent upon itselfto form an open-ended"frame,. incans on the free ends, and ;'intermediate tlieie ids; of said member adapted to engage a hat, an elastic member, means adjacen t the free ends of said frame adapted to'eng'age the ends of said elastic member, and means for securing 3c said elastic member to said resilient memon this 19th day of December;1923.
