G. PETERSON SUPPORT Filed Feb. 14, 1923 g PETE/F5 0M INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented June 17, 1924.
UNITED STATES GEHARD PETERSON, OF GRAND FORKS, NORTH DAKOTA.
SUPPORT.
Application filed February 14, 1923.
T 0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEHARD Pn'rnnson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Forks, in the county of Grand Forks and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Supports, of which the following is a specifioation.
This invention relates to supports, and an object of the invention is to provide a sup port or holder adapted for attachment to motor vehicles for carrying and supporting the hat and coat of an occupant of the motor vehicle.
Another object of this invention is to pro vide a support or holder as specified which comprises an attaching plate having spring controlled pivoted means associated therewith adapted to support the coat of the wearer and frictionally engage a hat brim.
Other objects of the invention will ap pear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the improved support.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the support.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved support comprises an at taohing plate 1, which has a plurality of openings formed in its head or upper end by means of which it may be attached to the interior of a motor vehicle. The attaching plate 1 has ears 3 formed integrally therewith at its edge portion, to which ears, the ears 4: formed on the pivoted member 5 are pivotally connected by means of the pin 6. The pivoted holding or supporting member 5 has its lower end bent inwardly and ridged as shown at 7 for engagement with the facing surface of the attaching plate 1 and for gripping a hat brim between the ridge 7 and the plate 1 to support the hat.
Serial No. 618,954.
A spring 8 is coiled about the pin 6 and has'one end connected to the pin and the other end connected to one of the ears 4 for yieldably maintaining the lower gripping portion of the. pivoted member 5 in hat brim gripping position. The upper end 9 of the pivoted member 5 is reduced. in width andhas a knob 10 formed upon its upper end. The reduced portion 9 is adapted to engage a coat to support the coat.
By supporting the coat above the pivot of the pivoted member 5 the weight of the coat will cooperate with the spring 8 in holding the lower gripping end of the member 5 in gripping engagement with ahat or analogous article. V v
Itis, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1- In a support, a substantially fiat attaching plate, a member pivotally connected thereto and having its lower end bent inwardly towards the attaching plate, a ridge formed at the end of the bent portion for normal engagement with the flat face of the attaching plate to provide an article gripping portion, a spring for urging the ridge toward the attaching plate for gripping an article, the upper end of said pivoted member above its pivot being reduced in width and a knob at the upper end of the reduced portion to form a coat engaging member whereby the weight of the coat will cooperate with the spring in urging the ridge into gripping position with respect to the attaching plate.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
