COMBINED k(LOMB rAND BRUSH.
Application filed January 31, 1924.` Serial No. 639,759.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH YAvoRsKY, a citizen of Czechoslovakia, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements yin Combined VCombs and Brushes, of which the followingv is a specification.
useful improvements in combined combs and brushes of the type wherein' a comb is supported upon the back of a ybrush permitting selective use of a comb or brush single combined implement.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a combined comb and brush and the particular manner of supporting the comb upon the brush backv whereby the same may be readily kremoved for purposes of cleaning or replacement and when supported upon the brush back will possess suflicient rigidity for performingnthe natural functions thereof.
lVith the above and other objects in view as the nature of the inventionfis better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter` more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
l Figure 1 is a top plan view of a combined comb and brush constructed in accordancev with the present invention,
Figure 2 is aside elevational view ofthe same," i i l Figure 3 is a crosssectional View talren'on lineV IIL-III of Figure 2 showing theremovable plate sections for the brush back engaging the opposite sides of the base portion of a comb,
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken on line IV-IV of Figure 1 showing the interlocking connection between the removable plate sections that grip the comb,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary top plan view showing by dotted lines, the connecting means between the plate sections,
Figure 6 is a cross sectionalview taken on line VI-VI of Figure 5 showing the ten-4 sioned latch arm carried by one plate engaging a keeper lug carried by the other plate, and
Figure 7 is a detail sectional View taken on line Vil-VII of Figure l6.
r transversely This invention relates to certain new and Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated a combined comb and brush wherein the ybrush backing 1 carrying theusual bristles 2 is provided with a handle 3 upon one end thereof. For purposes presently to appear,
thek brush backing 1 is provided with a extending'k dove-tail-shaped groove 4 inthe upper side thereof opposite the bristles 2.- i f A pair of back plates 5 and 6 combined to form the general outline of the brushfbaclring 1 are slidably associated with the'brush backing transversely thereof, each of the back plates 5 and 6v carrying al depending transversely extending dove-tail-shaped rib 7 that is slidably received in the groove 4 of the kbrush backing 1. The longitudinal meeting edges ofthe Lback plates 5 and 6 are formed with matching recesses 8 that are reduced 'at opposite ends thereof as `at 9 andv shown more clearly in Figures 5 and 7. A comb 10 hasits base portion disposed in the recess 8 and a felt or other cushion packing strip 1.1 is interposedbetween the -comb and walls'of said recess and entend outwardly f through the reduced portions 9of said recess `to be clamped between the back plates 5 and 6. Movement ofthe back plates toward y each other is limitedby the rib 12 positioned s centrally athwart the dove-tail-'shaped groove 4 and projecting upwardly from the bottom wall of said groove to be 'engaged by the adj acentIends of the ribs 7. f
. The connection between the back plates 5 and 6 includes theprovision `of an opening 13 or recess inthe under side of the back plate 5 adjacent each end thereof and 'opening` at the straight yedge of the plate 'and having one end of a latch lever 14 secured upon the upper wall of said recess 13 as at 14, the latch lever 14 freely extending through openings provided in the adjacent portions of the cushioning strip 11 and through an opening 15 in the back plate 6, the opening 15 extending completely through the plate 6 and having a relatively wide mouth 16 at its outer end. A latch hook 17 is carried by the upper face of the latch lever 14 and is adapted to be moved into engagement with 4the keeper lug 18 carried by the plate 19 separated and disengaged from the brush backing l. The cushioning str'ips 11 interposed between the back plates and comb provide a substantially resilientmounting for the two back plates and tend to hold 'the latch lever in engagement with the keeper Vhile there are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes `may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
That is claimed as new is v 1.In a combined comb and brush, a brush backing having bristles projecting from one face thereof, a pair of back plates transversely slidable upon the `brush backing and cut away at their meeting edges to form a comb receiving pocket, a comb in Y the pocket clamped in position by the back vplates and means for locking the back plates together. Y
2. In a combined comb and brush, Aa brush 'backing having bristles projecting from one face thereof, a pair of back plates transversely slidable upon the brush backing and cut away at their 'meeting edges to form a comb receiving pocket, a comb Ain the pocket clampedl in position -by the ba-ck plates, means for locking the back plates together, and a cushion strip interposed between the walls of the pocket and the comb.
3. In a combined vcomb and brush, a brush backing having bristles projecting from one face thereof, a pair of back platestransversely fslidable upon the brush backing `and cutaway 'at their meeting edges 'to form aV comb kreceiving pocket, a comb inthe pocket clamped in lposition by the back plates, and -means for lockii-.i'g the back plates together, the l plate locking means including a tensioned latch lcarri-ed by one plate and engaging a keeper lug carried by the other plate.
4. In -a combined comb 'and brush, a brush backing having bristles projecting from one face thereof, a pair of back plates transversely slidable upon the brush backing and cut away at their meeting edges to forni a comb receiving pocket, a 1comb in the pocket clamped in position by the back plates, means for locking the back plates together, and a cushion strip interposed between the walls of the pocket and the comb, the plate locking means including a tensioned latch carried by one plate and engaging a keeper lug carried by the other plate. y
5. In a combined comb and brush, la brush backing'having bristles projecting from one face thereof, 'a pair of back plates transversely slidable upon the brush backing and cut away at their meeting edges to form a comb receiving pocket, a comb in the pocket clamped in position by the back plates, and means for locking the back plates together, the .plate locking means including a ten- 'sioned latch carriedrby one plate and engaging a keeper lug carried by the other plate, the connection ybetween the back plates and brush backing including the formation of spaced alined dovetail-shaped grooves in the upper face of the brush backing and dove-tail-shaped ribs depending from the back plates.
6. In la combined comb and brush, a brush backing having bristles projecting from kone face thereof, a Apair of back plates transversely slidable upon the brush backing and cut away at their meet-ing edges to form a `comb receiving pocket, a ycomb in `the'pocket Aclamped in rposition by "the back plates, means for locking the back plates together, and va cushion strip interposed between the walls of the pocket and the comb, the plate locking means including la tensioned latch carried by yone Vplate and engaging a. keeper lug carried bythe otherV plate,- theconnection between the backplates and brush backing inclu-ding the formation of spaced Aalined dove-tail-shaped grooves in the upper face of the brush backing 'and doveetail-shaped ribs depending from thebackplates. K
In testimony whereof I affix my signa-` ture.y Y
