- Thisinvention relates to improvements in fliers for-use upon silk spinning or twisting machines, having for an object to provide a flier which, in addition to performing the usual functions of applying the necessary tension to effect a perfect take-up of the threads and as a guide in the releasing or unwinding'of the threads from the bobbin on the spindle, will serve to apply a steadier tension to the threads, thus producing a more uniform thread and also, to restrict the socalled balloon of the thread, caused by the rapid unwinding of the same, to what may be aptly termed a cone whirl, hence, eliminating possibility of the thread striking threads from adjacent spindles and permiting the twisting of heavy sized threads with a hard twist,'thereby avoiding snarls and the incident disadvantages thereof.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN IV. MEDERNAOH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Palmerton, in the county of Carbon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Fliers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable otherssl'rilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention relates to improvements in fliers for-use upon silk spinning or twisting machines, having for an object to provide a flier which, in addition to performing the usual functions of applying the necessary tension to effect a perfect take-up of the threads and as a guide in the releasing or unwinding'of the threads from the bobbin on the spindle, will serve to apply a steadier tension to the threads, thus producing a more uniform thread and also, to restrict the socalled balloon of the thread, caused by the rapid unwinding of the same, to what may be aptly termed a cone whirl, hence, eliminating possibility of the thread striking threads from adjacent spindles and permiting the twisting of heavy sized threads with a hard twist,'thereby avoiding snarls and the incident disadvantages thereof.
It is likewise an object of the invention to provide a flier which may be readily threaded because of the novel arrangement of eye'- lets therein and likewise, a flier wherein the thread will be automatically. threaded therethrough in event that the same is overlooked by an attendant.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood'by persons skilled in the art, I have in the accompanying illustrative drawings, and in the detailed following description based thereon, set out several possible embodiments of the same.
I-nthese drawings?- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bobbin supporting spindle showing the improved flier applied thereto;

Figure 3 is a plan view of a slightly modifled form of the flier; and,
Figure 4c is a similar view of a still further modified form of the flier.
Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout, the improved flier may be stated to comprise a body portion or piece of extremely hard or highly compressed fibre board or similar composition possessing the necessary strength and lowfriction qualities, indicated by the numeral 1, the intermediate portion 2 of the body being circularly enlarged and formed with a bear ing opening wherebythe device may be engaged over the upper portion of the spindle 3, as indicated in the Figure 2, whereupon a mill nut 4 is engaged with the upper extremity ofthe spindle for an obvious purpose; In this connection, it is, of course, t'obe understood that a bobbin 5 is supported upon the upper portion of the spindle 3, directly beneath or below the flier body por-t'ionl, as is also indicated in the Figure 1.
The opposite end portions of the body of the flier are enlarged and segmentally shaped as indicated'by the numeral 6 and have inwardly extending oppositely disposed diagonal grooves or ways 7 formed in the intermediate portions thereof and terminating at their inner ends in eyelets 8,iwhic-h, as will be understood, are adapted: to receive the thread 9 therethrough, such thread being threaded or introduced into the respective way 8 by way of the particular slot 7 provided therefor.
It may be here noted that the length of the body portion 1 of the flier is slightly greater than the' diameter of the bobbin spool and in consequence, it will be noted upon reference to the Figures 1 and 2 that the outer extremities or opposite end portionsof the body portion extend slightly beyond the opposite sides of the bobbin spool and in consequence, will permit of'the free release of the thread 9 from the bobbin 5 during rotation of the same with the spindle 3 and hence, will permit said thread to be freely passed through the guide ring 10 without liability of splitting, tearing," or breaking the same.
In the Figure 3, I have shown aslightly modified form of the improved flier wherein the same comprises a body portion 1 formed of material corresponding to that described in connection with the Figure 1 and having a circularly enlarged intermediate portion 2 formed with a bearing opening, while the ity of ways 7 each of which terminates, at

'it is to be noted that the several sets of ways 7 formed in the several segmental enlargements 6 are extended in opposite directions. Thus, provision is made i for receiving threads through the various eyelets S of the modified form of the flier.
In the Figure 4, still another modified form of the improved flier is disclosed,
' wherein the body portion 1 has enlarged segmentally shaped end portions (3 each of which is provided with an intermediately located inwardly extending diagonally disposed way 7*;the ways inthe several segmental enlargements 6? being extended in opposite directions, as is clearly shown.
,Eyelets formed of porcelain, glass, or other suitable hardmaterlal possessing low fr1ction'qualities are engaged with the segmental portions'ti of the flier body 1 at points adjacent the inner ends of the several ways -7"* formed'thereinand these eyelets 11 serve to receive the threads from a bobbin equipped with the flier therethrough. By reason of the-low friction qualities of the eyelets 11 it is to beappreciated that the tearing, rupturing or splitting of threads passing there-through will be eliminated.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that I have provided a simple but highly efficient form of flier, which because of its 'novel construction, will restrict the ba loon of the threads to a' cone whirl,
whereby to eliminate-any tendency of the thread striking the threads running from adjacent spindles. f In eliminating this ob- 'jectionable feature, it is to be also'understood that the flier will facilitate the twisting of heavy sized threads with a hard twist, permitting this classof Work to be done on machines-of narrow spindle spacing, which, with the devicesnow prevalent in the art, is
impossible. It. is also essential to note that the flier reduces the tendency when the threads breakdown from a natural cause to have the same, as it breaks, strike and tear; other ends on the adjacent spindles and likewise. will by reason of the material from; which itis constructed, reduce the tendency of hairy and split threads and similar im perfect products. Furthermore, because of the absence of wire and similar comparatively intricate constructions, it will be understood that the cutting and bruising of the hands of an operator in adjusting and threading the fliers constructed in accord ance with the invention will be eliminated.
ldanifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claims.v I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1 A flier comprising a piece of hard low friction material having the opposite extremities thereof enlarged and segment-ally shaped, portions of such segmentally shaped extremities having diagonally disposed slots therein terminating at their inner ends in eyelets.
2. A flier comprising a piece of hard low friction material having the opposite 0xtremities thereof enlarged and segmentallyn shaped and the intermediate portions thereof provided with a bearing opening, portions of such segmentally shaped extremities having oppositely exposed diagonally extending slots therein terminating at their inner ends in eyelets.
3. A flier comprising a piece of hard low friction material having the opposite end portions thereof enlarged and segmentally shaped and the intermediate portions thereof provided with an enlarged bearing portion, having an opening therein, portions of such segmentally shaped portions having oppositely exposed diagonally extending slots therein, and eyelets formed of a harder matter engaged in the inner ends of said slots.
4. In combination with a bobbin supportingspindle, a flier supported thereon above the bobbin, said flier comprising a piece of hard friction material having the opposite extremities thereof enlarged and segmentally shaped, the intermediate portion of flier being provided with. a bearing opening engageable over the upper portion of said spindle above said bobbin, portions of said segmentally shaped extremities having outwardly opening'oppositely disposed diagonally extending ways therein terminating at their inner ends in eyelets, said flier being of a length slightly greater than the diam eter of the bobbin spool, as and for the purpose set forth. a
