Be it known that I, THOMAS J. AVERY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Albia, in the county of Monroe and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scrapers, of which the following is a full,'clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to devices for removing drillings and other loosened material from drill holes in mining operations, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described that combines in one tool means for performing op` erations for which a plurality of separate tools have heretofore been required.
A further object of my invention is to provide a tool of the character described having means for removing a greater mass of loosened material from a drill hole than has heretofore been possible with a scraper of a given size.
A further object of my invention is to provide a scraper having a scraper blade formed for use in dislodging and loosening material that has been packed into a relatively dense mass in a drill hole without the necessity for withdrawing the blade from the drill hole. i
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described in which reenforcing means are provided at the juncture of the blade with a rod, whereby a tbol of maximum strength is provided when a given material is used.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the Jfollowing specification, and the novel features of the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the device, an intermediate portion of the shank thereof being broken away, and
Figure 2 is a similar view, the tool being turned at right angles to the position illustrated in Figure 1.
As is well known, drillings and other loosened material are removed from a drill hole in mining operations by means of a scraper, which in its conventional form embodies a shank having a blade at one end Serial No. 504,386.
extending substantially at right angles to the shank. The drillings and other granular substances in a drill hole are very often packed into a dense mass at the bottom of a drill hole and it has been necessary heretofore to withdraw the scraper from the drill` hole and employ a special tool, commonly known as a needle, to break up the loosened material of they dense mass before the scraper can be used to advantage. When my improved scraper is used, a dense mass at the bottom of a drill hole can be broken up and loosened for removal when the scraper is manipulated in an ordinary manner.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a shank l illustrated as having the form of a straight rod. The shank 1 is provided at one end with an integral disk-like blade 2 which extends at right angles to the shank 1. The blade 2 has integral web portions 3 and l extending from the side edges of the blade to the adjacent sides of the shank 1 and being merged into the latter. The web portions 3 and 4 have a double function. They reenforce the connection of the shank 1 with the blade 2 so that the latter is not likely to be broken 0E in service, as frequently happens when a scraper of ordinary construction is used. In addition, the web ortions 3 and 4 co-act with thevblade 2 and with the shank l to prevent the displacement of a mass of loosened material with which the inner face of the blade moved in contact during the operation of the device. In consequence, a greater mass of loose material can be removed from a drill hole in one operation when my device is used than has heretofore been possible when an ordinary scraper of the same size has been used.
The-shank l is equipped at it-s end opposite the end having the blade 2 with a similar blade 5 which is connected at its side edges with the` adjacent portions of the shank 1 by web portions 6 and 7 which are integral with both the blade and the shank. The blade 5 has formed therein a kerf which extends from the outer edge thereof toward the center of the blade, terminating a predetermined distance from the latter. The kerf is so directed with respect to the inner face 8 of the blade and the outer face 9 thereof to provide beveled walls 10 and 11. It will be observed that the beveled wall 10. joins the outer face 9 of the blade at an acute angle to `provide a sharp edge 12. Since the peripheral Wall of the blade 5 is curved, as shown, it Will be manifest that the curved peripheral Wall of the blade, the wall 10, and the outer face 9 Will converge to a point at 13. The portion of the blade 5 having the beveled Wall 10 is then displaced outwardly With res ect to the remainder of the blade so t at the beveled Wall 10 extends at an angle or pitch to vthe outer face of the remainder of the blade.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. While l have shown the shank l as being provided With a blade at each end thereof and only one 0f these blades formed With a displaced portion and a cutting edge, it is to be under'- stood that I may provide blades having the displaced portion describedv at both encs of the shank 1 or may provide a shank having a blade at only one end thereof, Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. In the operation of the device, the shank 1 is exten-ded into a drill hole and the drillings or other loose material in the drill hole are scraped therefrom in the usual manner. It Will be apparent, however, that a greater mass may be removed at one operation than is possible when the ordinary Vfiat bladed scraper is used, since the web portions Will serve as sides for the blade and ivill'prevent the material engaged from being dislodged from the blade. In the event that it is necessary to dislodge and loosen any material at the bottom of the drill hole before such material can be engaged by the scraping blade, a sufficient pressureis applied to occasion the engagement of the cutting edge 12 and the point 13 with the compact mass of material in the drill hole. The shank 1 is then rotated in a clockwise direction and the cutting edge 12 and the point 13 will bite into the mass in the manner of an auger. Obviously, the dense mass Will be thoroughly broken up and loosened and may then be removed from the drill hole in the manner described. It will thus be apparent that a great economy in time and labor required for cleaning a drill hole is effected, since the Workmen need carry only the one tool and can occasion the breaking up and loosening of the material instantly Without the necessity for withdrawing the scraper from the hole and using a special tool.
l claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a shank having lan integral blade at one end thereof, said blade having the form of a flat disc extending laterally to the shank, and at right angles thereto, and web shaped portions integral With both the blade and the shank, and merging opposite sides of the blade into corresponding portions of the shank, said blade having a kerf extending to its central point from its outer edge, and a portion of the blade margining the kerf being displaced to eX- tend in advance of the remainder of the blade, and at an angle to the forward face of the remainder of the blade, the kerf wall of the relatively displaced portion of the blade being at an angle to the face of the blade.
2. A device of the character described comprising a shank having a. pair of integral blades, one. at each end thereof, said blades having the form of a flat disc extending laterally of the shank at right angles thereto, and web shaped portions integral with said blades and the shank, and merging at opposite sides of the blade into corresponding portions of the shank.r one of said blades being provided vvith a kerf extending to its central point from its outer edge and that portion of the blade margining the kerf being displaced to eX- tend in advance of the remainder of said blade and at an angle to the forward face of the remainder of said blade, the k-erf Wall of the relatively displaced portions of said blade being at an angle to the face of the blade.
3. A device of the character described comprising a shank having a scraper blade extending laterally thereof and at right angles thereto, said scraper blade having a kerf extending inwardly therein frogn its outer edge, and a portion of the blade margining the kerf being displaced to eX- tend at an angle to the remainder of the blade, the kerf Wall of the relatively displaced portion of the blade extending at an acute angle to the forward face of the blade. to provide a relatively sharp cutting edge.
