IMBROVEMENT IN WATCH-CHAIN HOOKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,685, dated April 14, 1874; application filed January 24, 1874- To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY T. SALISBURY, of Pawtucket,'in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Watch Ohain Hook, of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to furnish an improved watch chain hook, by which the watch-chain remains always securely attached to the vest without being liable to detachment by accident or pick-pockets.

My' invention consists of a circular pivoted guard-hook, which is locked to its stem "by means of a central boat sliding in a tubular sleeve at the inside of the stem. The sleeve 'is slotted for guiding a projecting rib of the central bolt, which rib is notched and locked by two or more annular bands or rings, and detached from the same when a notch of their inner circumference is brought in line with the slotof the sleeve, so that the bolt may be withv drawn and the hook opened.

In the drawing, A represents a circular, oval, or otherwise shaped guard-hook of a watch-chain, which is pivoted to a stationary part at the end of stem B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The stationary piece is firmly connected to stem B, while the end of the pivoted part is provided with a small perforation, a,

' for admitting the bolt When thrown into closed position. The stem B is hollow, and provided with an inside slotted sleeve, 0, in which the central bolt D plays. A projection or rib, b, of bolt extends into the slot of sleeve 0, and

guides thereby bolt D in its forward and re-- turn motion, till arrested by its end disk or the end of the slot. The proj ection b is notched crosswise, so that two or more annular bands or rings, E, playing loosely in grooves of the stem, project into these notches, and lock thereby bolt D in position. Bands E, however, are also provided with a notch at their inner circumference, the exact place of which is indicated on the outside by a letter or other suitable mark. The position of the slot of the sleeve 0 is also marked OK on the stem, so that when the marks on the bands are placed in line with the mark of the stem, the notches of the bands are above the slot of the sleeve, and release the projection 1), allowing thus the withdrawal of the bolt and the opening of the hook.

After closing the hook the position of the bands is changed, and thereby a kind of permutation-lock of the bolt obtained, which cannot play itself loose, nor be detached by pickpoekets.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new' and desire to secure by Letters Patent The improved chain-hook, composed of main stem B with slotted tubular inside sleeve 0 and pivoted hook A, central bolt D, and outer bands or rings E, substantially for the purpose described.
