IMPROVEM ENT IN PADLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,300, dated March 18, 1879 application filed January 18, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. A. RoMnR, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention I relates particularly to that class oflocks which are commonly known as jail-locks; and it consists in the construction of parts and the means for holding the shackle to the shell or case, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are vertical sections of a lock embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents the shackle; Fig. 4, the locking-plate; and Fig. 5, the key-tube. Fig. 6 is an inverted view of the shell or case. Fig. 7 showsa dummy used .in putting the lock together.
A represents the shell or case of the lock, provided in its top with two holes, a a, for the passage of the two legs of the shackle B. In the center, on the inner sides of the shell, are longitudinal flanges Z) I) to form guides for receiving and holding the usual tumblers O O.
In the top of the shell, between the flanges b, is formed a recess, m, extending entirely across the shell to receive a locking-plate, hereinafter described. The hole a in the top of the shell, through which the long leg of the shackle passes, is beveled at its inner side, as shown at y, and the end of the long leg of the shackle has on its outer side a lug or projection, d. The inner side of the end of this leg is rounded or beveled, so that by turning the shackle so that the lug d will be on the side of the bevel y in the hole a the shackle can be inserted in the shell.
In the recess as in the top of the shell is then placed a plate, D, which fits therein, and has a central hole, 0, as shown. From the center of this plateprojects a lug, f, the end of which is concave to fit against the round portion of the long leg of the shackle and take up or compensate for the metal removed by beveling the hole a at y, so that when the other parts of the lock are in position the shackle cannot be removed. This device obviates the necessity of riveting or setting up the end of the shackle inside of the shell, and at the same time allows the shackle to be taken out if at any time necessary by simply taking the lock apart.
In putting the lock together I use a dummy, F, consisting of the slotted tube, which is placed in the center hole, 6, of the lockingplate D, and the tumbler O can then easily be dropped into place, as well as the spring G and piece H, the tumblers and spring being then looked bya key, I. 'The tube or dummy F is then withdrawn and the key-tube J inserted, after which the bottom plate, L, of the lock is fastened in place in the usual manner.
The locking-plate D, having the central hole, 0, forms the inner bearingfor the key-tube J, thus obviating the necessity of drilling any hole for the inner end of the key-tube.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the shackle B, hav ing a lug, d, at the end of its long leg, and the shell A, having the hole a for said leg, bev
eled at y, for the purposes set forth.
2. The locking-plate D, formed with the concave lug f, in combination with the shell A, having recess 00 and hole a, beveled at 3 and the shackle B, with lug d on the end of its long leg, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The locking-plate D, provided with a central hole, 6, to form a bearing for the inner end of the key-tube, substantially as set forth.
