L. E. POLHEMUS COMBINED TIE AND PENCIL CLIP Filed Aug. 19 1922 /NVENTOH Patented June 3, i924.
E 5 T T E 8 LOUIS EDWARD POLHEM'US, OF MIAMI, ARIZONA.
COMBINED TIE AND PENCIL CLIP.
Application filed. August 19, 1922.
To all whom it may con-cm:
Be it known that I, LOUIS E. POLHEMUS,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Miami, in the county of Gila and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tie and Pencil Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined tie clip and pencil holder and has for its object to provide in a tie clip, means for holding a pen or pencil.
' Another object of the invention is to provide in a pen or pencil clip, means for lockingly securing the same to a garment.
Another object of the invention is to provide in. a pen or pencil clip, a spring looking means for securing the clip to a pen or pencil.
With the above and other objects in view I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved clip;
Figure 2 is a. front elevational view thereof;
Figure 3 is a rear elevational view thereof;
Figure 4 is a sectional elevational view showing the method of securing the clip to a fountain pen and to a garment; and
Figure 5 is an elevational view showing the application of the device as a combined tie clip and pencil holder.
Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a cam lever member.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawings in which, 1 indicates a combined tie and pencil clip and consists of an inverted U shaped member 2, having a long arm 3 and a short arm 4, the latter terminating in right a-ngularly disposed extension ears 5 and 6, which form bearings for the pintles 7 on the opposing edges of the cam lever 8, which pivotally operates between the said extension ears. The cam end 9 of said lever 8 is of a length to normally press outwardly in-set end 3 of the arm 9, as the lever end 8 of the member 8 is turned down parallel with the arm 4:. However, said cam is not long enough to normally engage Serial No. 582,979.
which the clip is adapted to be secured, said edge 11 being adapted to bind said material 12 upon the inclined wall portion 13 of the arm 4, thus preventing the clip from becoming detached from the material until after the lever arm 8 is raised.
Extending rearwardly from the opposing edges of the upper part of the wall 3 are a pair of curved spring arms let and 15, which form a pen or pencil clip. The arm 3 terminates in the angular end 16 adapted to seat in a similarly formed groove 17 formed in the wall of the pen 18, said wall 13 being inclined in a manner to make the member 16 to spring into said recess 17 and prevent the clip from slipping through. A similar niche or recess 17 may be cut into the wall of the pencil 19 to receive the tongue 16.
Having described my invention that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class ing a spring arm having an oifset terminal for engagement with a held object, spring members extending from said arm for holding an object engaged by said terminal, a second spring armintegral with the first named arm, and an angular gripping lever pivotally connected to said second arm for engaging a fabric interposed between the arms. I
2. The combination with integral spring arms, one of said arms being longer than the other and having a flat bearing portion, of article engaging members extending from one end portion of the long arm, the other end portion of the long arm being ofifset to bite into an engaged article, and an angular gripping lever pivotally connected to the short arm and cooperating with the flat bearing surface of the long arm to grip and hold a fabric inserted between the arms.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS EDWARD POLHEMUS.
