SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of 'Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Razor-Stropping Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to razor stropping machines, pertaining more particularly to a stropping device adapted to be held wholly in the hands of the user.
An object of the invention is to vprovide in a stropping device a body portion carrying a blade holder, and two reciprocating parts movable with respect to one another in op posite directions and with respect to the body portion, and adapted in their movement to cause the blade being sharpened to be alten nately and automatically reversed in position and moved against stropping members F carried by said parts.
Another object is to provide a stropping device wherein a body portion carrying a blade holder supports two members adapted to reciprocate in opposite directions andeach carrying a stropping portion, 4one .of the members being gearedto the other whereby in a movement of one of them a like move ment must result in the other but in an opposite direction, the movement of one of such members acting to rock the blade to be sharpened and carrying its edge against the two stropping portions, and to shift the blade whereby to realize thedesired diagonal stro-pping action. i

The stropping device includes a body portion comprises side members 1 having at opposite edges enlargements 2, Figure 3, said sides being connected by end members 3 forming a frame. Also connecting thesaid side members vat one side of the frame is a part t, Figures 4 and 5.
Engaging the enlargement 2 at one side of the said frame is a portion 5, constituting a slide, whose edges are turned inwardly to en close said enlargements, as most clearly shown in Figures 3 and 4. Secured upon one of the turned edges is a toothed raek 6 whose teeth mesh with those of a pinion 7 rotatable upon a stud S exending from one of the side members 1 of the .described ybody portion. The opposite ends. of the slide 5 areleacli provided with a flange 9 extendingsubstantially at right angles to the plane thereof in the direction `of the body portion and a stropping portion 10 such as leather, for eX- ample, is stretched from one to the other and secured at its ends thereto.
Engaging one yof the enlargements 2 opposite those engaged by the slide 5 just described is the flanged edge 11 of a frame 12, the opposite edge or said frame terminating inside the opposite enlargement 2 or in spaced relation thereto. This frame likewise has end flanges 13 corresponding to the flanges 9 of the side 5 'and a stropping por tion 14 is stretched between and is secured at its ends thereto.

In other words the travel of the stropping portions is and must be always away from the cutting edge of the blade. Preferably th-e {ia-nged edges of the slides are knurled to furnish a grip for the hands as an aid in operating the device.
The compactness, rigidity and strength of the device is notable and appealing. W'hile I may make slight changes in the construction and arrangements of the parts of the device they will be such as will fairly fall within the invention and the appended claims.

A razor stropping device including in its construction a support, a frame pivoted on the same and free to swing, means to limit the swinging movement of the frame, a blade-holder mounted in the fra-me, a slide at each of two opposite sides of the support adapted for simultaneous reciprocating movement in opposite directions, a stropping member carried by each slide, a series of teeth on each slide, an idler-pinion mounted on the support in permanent engagement with the teeth of both slides, an arm extending from the blade-holder, and an arm eX- tending from vone of the slides havingyoperative engagement with the first named arm tion carried b v each slide, and means operated by one of the slides for engaging and imparting movement to both the frame and the blade-holder.

A razor stropping device including in its construction a support having guideways on 'two opposite sides thereof, a slide at each side engaging the guideways, a stropping portion carried by each. slide facing one another within the support, a frame mounted within the support between the stropping portions, a blade-holder mounted in the frame between the stropping portions adapted to oscillate, means to oscillate said holder and to swing the fra-me carrying said holder comprising an arm on the latter and an arm engaging it moved by one of the slides, and spaced portions on the support to receive the :trame against them for limiting the swingr of such frame.

A razor stropping device including in its construction a support, a slide mounted thereon adapted to reciprocate, a stropping portion carried by it, a frame pivoted on the support adapted to swing in a plane parallel to the plane of the said stropping portion, a blade-holder mounted in the frame adapted to oscillate including a pair of spaced portions lying parallel to onek another, a member engaging the portions and overlying them, said portions and the member adapted to receive and hold a razor blade between them, an arm secured to the spaced portions, and a member carried by the slide engaging said arm.
