HAIR-CUTTER. ATTACHMENT.

Be it known that I, EDWARD E. ZrneLnR, acitizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hair-Cutter Attachments, of which the'following is a specification, V
This invention relates to cutting devices and it has more particular reference to hair cutters and clippers, the primaryobject being to provide a novel attachment or bot tom cutter for such devices whereby their efficiency and utility are greatly enhanced.
Heretofore hand clippers and mechanically actuated hair cutters use the same kinds and makes of blades, the bottom blades being substantially flat on their under faces and longitudinally grooved or ridged to pre vent lateral slippage when in use. In all cases as heretofore constructed the back part or heel portion of the bottom blade has a tendency to hurt the head when in use, due mainly to its hardness and angular finish. Another objection inhering to present structures or forms. of hair clippers and cutters consists in the'fact that the operator of such devices exerts a pressure against the head -when cutting the hair which results in a more or less fiat cut varying with the thickness of the blade employed.
On account of the foregoing specified disadvantages inhering to the formation of the lower blades perfectly flat hand clippers and power actuated hair cutters have only been employed heretofore for clipping or cutting the hair at the sides and back of a persons head as well as around the ears,
the remaining portion of the hair-cut being effect-ed in the old fashioned manner with ordinary shears or scissors. 7
Should the barber or operator be nervous or unsteady in the manipulation of the clipper or cutter, it will be obvious that the result attained will be more or less unsatisfactory; or, in other words, there will be produced a stepped out that presents a very unsightly appearance unlesscarefully trimmed thereafter. 7
Having in mind all the aforementioned disadvantages, I have devised my present invention, the same essentially consisting in providing an attachment for connection to the outer face of a'hair clipper or out ter bottom blade, said attachment converging outwardly from a substantially knife edge at the back of the lower blade teeth to a rounded rear portion where it is shouldered to abut at the back of the lower blade heel. Or the lower blade for a hair clipper or cutter may be formed as a unit of the aforementioned longitudinal section; that is to say, more specifically, with a rearward converge terminating in a rounded heel.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings constituting;

Figure 6 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the views an ordinary hand clipper is designated by the numeral 7, the same being of the well known standard type and provided with an upper movable blade or cutting element 8 and a lower fixed blade or second cutting element 9. This latter blade or cutting element 9, as will be clearly seen from the drawings, is fashioned at its forward part with angularly inclined teeth 10. the grooves between which merge into longitu dinalgrooves in the underside thereof in the well known way. t will also be best seen from Figure 1 that the rear or back part of the lower blade or cutting element 9 is finished off with a sharp angular edge 11, the same having been hereinbefore referred to as one of the objectionable features inhering to prevailing structures as at present obtaining or in use In Figure a mechanically operated hair cutter 12 is shown in dotted outline while the upper and lower cutting elements are characterized by the reference characters 8, 9' re spectively.
In accordance with my present invention,
1 fashion or otherwise form a unitary attachment 13 of appropriate and durable light metal which is of a contour in plan to conform neatly to the underside plan dimensions of the aforesaid lower fixed blade or cutting element 9, that is to say, it is filleted at 1 1 and provided with an integral heel portion 15 of an inner cross section to snugly fit and abut the aforementioned angular edge 11. It is also to be particularly noted that this unitary attachment 13 is of a longitudinal section that outwardly converges from an approximate knife edge at the front portion 16 to a maximum thick ness at 17 from whence it sweps upwardly in curved contour to the back of the heel portion 15. It is further to be remarked that this unitary attachment 13 is.of a dimension from the inner wall of the heel portion 15 to extend forwards into alignment with the rear or back lower edge of the aforesaid angularly inclined teeth 10 on the lower blade or fixed cutter 9 so that when the parts are assembled, as will be best seen from Figures 1 and at, there will be no obtruding edge at the point 16 although there is a slightly different angular inclination as between said inclined teeth 10 and the main or fiat underfa-ce of the attachment 13. Holes 18 may be provided through the attachment 13 so that it can be clamped in place by the ordinary bottom blade 9 holding screws 19, as will be readily understood by those conversant with the art to which my invention appertains. Or, as shown by Figure 6, I may provide the attachment 13 with integral or attached side ears or damp ing tongues 20. These side ears or clamping tongues 20 will have a slight inherent degree of inward inclination or springiness so that when the attachment 13 is sprung into place on the lower fixed blade or cutting element 9 they will firmly grip the edges thereof and prevent lateral or other displacement of said attachment 13 rela tive to the element 9, as will be readily comprehended by those conversant with the art.
Still further it is to be noted that the underside of the attachment 13 is longitudinally grooved at 21 in the same manner as the underside of the bottom blade 9 so as to prevent lateral slippage when in use. said grooved parts 21 extending from the front portion 16 longitudinally rearwards up the back of the curved part and merging into the rear wall or face of the heel 15.
From the foregoing description it will be clearly apparent that by the provision'of my novel attachment 13 that but one size of bottom. blade 9 will be required to cut any length of hair. On the other hand, the bottom blade 9 and attachment 13 can be made as an integral structure and it will be clearly apparent that due to its novel longitudinalsection it constitutes a steady rest for the operator. Still further by tilting the clipper or cutter on the thickened part 17 as a fulcrum so to speak. any length of hair cut can readily and easily be accomplished. Another advantage of my novel device is that the entire head of hair can be cut or trimmed by simply varying the inclination of the device relative to the scalp thus eliminating the use of finishing shears or scissors entirely, whereby a great economy in time and labor is effected. Still further it will be apparent that. by my invention a camparatively unskilled operator can effect a neat and finished hair cut.
In conclusion it will be easily seen that my novel device is light in weight, easily attached to hand or power operated hair clippers or cutters, is steady for nervous users, cuts the hair any length and can be used for a complete hair cut as against only a partial one with existing devices. Another advantage resulting from the use of my attachment or invention on mechanically or power operated hair cutters is that it tends to keep said device cool in that the attachment 13 serves in a sense to insulate the cutters 8, 9 which frequently become heated as a result of the high rate of speed at which such devices are operated.
While there has been shown and described practical embodiments of my invention, the same are not to be too conservatively construed as it will be obvious slight detail variations can be readily effected without departing from the spirit and scope of said invention; the right is therefore hereby reserved to make such changes or modifications in shape as reasonably fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- As a new article of manufacture an attachment for hair cutting devices embodying a unit of analogous contour in plan. to that of the bottom cutter, said unit converging inlongitudinal section from a substantial knife edge at its frontal part where it engages the bottom cutter teeth to a rounded rear portion where it is upwardly stepped to abut the back of said bottom cutter heel, longitudinal grooves in the underface of said unit to prevent lateral slippage, and upset gripping ears for clamping the unit to the bottom blade of the aforesaid hair cutting device.
