IMPROVEMENT IN RECIPROCATING CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,609, dated April 14, 1874; application led January 23, 1874.

My invention relates to that class of churns in which the dasher and dasher-rod are used; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, as hereinafter de- To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe the 'exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawing, A is the ordinary churn; B, the dasher-rod 5 and b b', a compound dash er, secured in position by the braces 1 and 2, the one above the other, a distance about equal to the diameter of the dasher. 'lo the dasherrod B is secured the conical-shaped guard B', at a point which will enable the guard to move within the tube C, the lower or larger part of the guard fitting -loosely with the said pipe. The pipe C passes through and` is rigidly secured to the top c, and extends about an equal distance above the top, and down into the body of the churn-say, about twelve inches, more or less, according to the size of the churn. rlhe upper portion of this pipe is drawn in, as shown at c', so as to snugly t around the dasher-rod at that point. An orifice isv made in the tube C to admit air to the cream. D is a crankshaft, by which the churn-dasher is operated, having its bearings in vthe framework d d', which in turn rests on the top of the churn by means of the arm F, while the lower portion k of the frame is securely held in the socket K on the side of the churn. To the inner end of the crank-shaft D is secured the wheel E, from near the periphery of which passes the bent rod c up to and att-ached at a point in the dasher-rod above the upper end of the pipe C, thus forming a pitman for working the dasher. The upper end of the frame d is secured to ferrule Ff around the upper portion of dasher-rod-B, andwhich acts as a guide and support for the rod.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that, while the d'ashers b b are being operated by means of the crank D, wheel E, and pitman e, the cream is prevented from escaping by means of the guard B and pipe C.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the churn Aand dasherrod B, provided with the compound dasher I) b', the guard B', and pipe \C constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
