IMPROVEMENT IN FLOUR SCOOPS AND SIFTERS'.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,521, dated April 7, 1874; application filed February 3, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatI, FRANCIS M. PoULsoN,v of Cameron, in the county of Clinton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Scoop and Sieve and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,'and to the letters of reference marked, thereon, which form a part of this specication.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined scoop and flour-sifter provided with an interior revolving agitator or beater, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled `in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my combined scoop and sifter, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.

A represents a cylinder of any desired dimensions, made of tinl or other suitable material, and provided with a semi-spherical wirecloth bottom, B. This bottom is soldered to the inside of the cylinder A at such a height above the lower end thereof that the bottom will be entirely within the cylinder and suf-'- ficiently elevatedabove the lower edge that when the cylinder is set down upon its end the bottom will not touch the object upon which the cylinder rests. The upper end of the cylinder A is cut inclined in the usual scoop form. From the back of the combined scoop and sifter thus formed extendsV a straight handle, C, as shown. Within the cylinderA is placed an agitator or beater,

composed of a series of rods or wires, D D,

bent in semicircular form, and attached at their ends to a shaft, G, which passes longitudinally through the handle C, and is at its outer end provided with a crank, E. The handle C, with the shaft Cr passing through it, is arranged ,in such relation to the semicircular rods D D, taking into consideration their radius or diameter, that when the shaft is revolved the rods Will brush immediately over the wire-cloth bottom B, and prevent the meshes thereof' from becoming clogged. The shaft G has its. bearings in the handle, and together with the agitator D is entirely supported by it. s

I do not broadly claim a combined scoop and sifter, nor one provided with an interior agitator and beater, as this is not new. By my construction the wire-cloth bottom or sieve B is not liable of becoming injured; and, furthermore, by the shaft G passing through and having its bearings in the handle, the crank upon the end of the shaft is entirely out of the way when the device is used as a scoop, making the device easier to handle.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with the scoop and sifter A B, of the straight handle C, agitator or beater D, and the shaft G, passing through and having its bearings in the-handle C, and provided at its outer end with a crank, E, all substantially as and for 'the purposes herein set forth.
